Subject: New Song: I Am The Song
From: Jeri
Date: 11 Mar 01 - 09:46 PM

I did this in Paltalk tonight, and someone asked for the words. I think it could do with a couple more verses. I feel like I'm leaving a lot out, but I don't want to make it too long.

I Am The Song

The farmer toiled behind the plow
The sweat was heavy on his brow
He's nothing but a memory now
But I am the song

The time of whaling's passed and gone
And those whalers ways, for right or wrong
But still their voices linger on
For I am the song

Countless people, countless lives
Nothing but their song survives
But still their spirits carry on
For I am the song

For they sang it out in voices strong
And to their children passed it on
For me to one day come upon
And I am the song

It's more than just the words you sing
Or the way the notes can ring
The song is the people
And I am the song

I love it, Jeri, and would love to sing it. Need to hear the tune again though. You're right, it could have countless verses.

Thanks for posting it.

Noreen

Thanks Noreen. I wasn't sure anyone would ever hear this one. I thought it might be crap, but I didn't have any other material handy...

I'll catch you in PalTalk somewhere, or I can do a MIDI of the tune, or send you an MP3, or maybe send an MP3 to Max for the radio, or write it out, scan the dots and put it on Photoloft, or...well, we'll work something out. I'm just thrilled that you liked it. (As if you couldn't tell...)

*LOL* Jeri... a page of dots on Photoloft- now there's an idea!

I think you'd add verses appropriate to the occasion or the mood or the audience. We all know things that have passed away... yet not so far that they are past knowing.

And... I guess sometimes the song IS all that's left, and maybe the best parts are distilled into it.

They flung great fireworks across the sky;
She said the how, he sang the why.
Now ashes scatter, see them fly.
But I-- I am the song.

Jeri, A MIDI would be great, if you could. Then it could go into the DT's MIDI page.

Thanks!
Here it is in MIDIText. I know the ABC's are screwed up. I undoubtedly pinched the tune from somewhere, or maybe I just composted some traditional tunes in my head. I do it higher than EMin, (BMin's more like it) but it was easy to write down in this key.

Jeri, a very fine poem and it will be sung; there's no stopping it now. Just one suggestion for your last verse, which I hesitate to suggest but will anyway:

The song is the people and hope it brings,
And I am the song
