I knew that title would get you to check out the thread, even if you aren't a fan of Jug Bands.

The one and only DIRDY BIRDIES JUG BAND will be my guests on WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS this coming Sunday - 9/9. The Dirdy Birdies, together since 1966, have a great new CD out called TRACKS.

Is it my imagination or has there be a resurrgence of Jug Bands in recent years? The Birdies sound better than ever! 36 years of practice and they got it right!!!

You can listen in to TRADITIONS from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time through our website at www.wfdu.fm. You can also find some of our shows archived here at Mudcat.

In addition to the Dirdy Birdies, we will also be joined by DEBRA COWAN. It will be a fun afternoon!

Ron Olesko

Years ago, there was a group called the Bo Conrad Spit Band that was headquartered out of Minneapolis. They used a pair of kazoos (sort of like Bob Wills' twin fiddles) as lead instruments in an otherwise traditional jug band lineup (hence the name).

I lost track of them after I sobered up when I left college and I have oftened wondered if they're still around. Has anyone out there ever heard of them?

Look forward to listening around the computer on Sunday Night!

P.S. If you like Jug Band songs please check out the thread on Jug Band and Skiffle Song Lyrics and Chords. If you can add any songs it would be great too.

Cat -

We've only archived here at Mudcat... an exclusive contract that we signed!!! I will add this one to our collection as well.

I am amazed at the number of jug bands out there. I was speaking with Jack Pignatello of the Birdies and he has been trading CD's with other bands. He has recordings of jug bands across the states and around the world, including Australia and Israel. He reports that the Israeli jug band added a clarinet for a great sound. Jack has ageed to come on the show sometime with some of these recordings and we will do a whole show on Jug band history and music.

It is great fun! By the way, the Birdies will be appearing at Boodles Opera House in Chester, NY this Sunday night.

Ron

The Birdies have a couple of fine CDs themselves and a video of their trip to England some years ago. I saw them at the New Jersey folk festival a couple of years ago, they put on a great show. Should be good tonight!

Darn, I missed it!

Ron: Is there anyway that you can get Max to Archive this one. It should be recorded for posterity!

JAB
