Can anyone help. I have a recording of an old bluesman playing The Glory of Love in a sort of Ragtime style and sung?? more like grumbled andgrunted . It is completely hilarious and I'd love to know the guys name so I can hear more. Does this ring any bells

Could it be Big Bill Broonzy? I know he recorded the song back in the late '50' or early '60's.

I went to www.allmusic.com and looked up the song title. It listed 204 artists that recored the song including Joseph Spence, the Blues Brothers and Regis Philben. Any of those blues singers ring a bell?

Larkin, It is indeed the inimitable Joseph Spence (as suggested above) who recorded the most quirky version ever of the old Big Bioll Broonzy song. From the Bahamas, Joseph's style is unique and 'individual' to say the least. You sould hear his version of 'Jingle Bells'!! You can trace his stuff on Rounder Recs. Happy Hunting.. pjc

I thought it was by "Big Gruntin' Deffy Cayshun," a bluesman who could have been great but lost it all after he discovered Ex-Lax.

Joseph spense's grunting shouldnt detract from the fantastic originality of his guitar style, which is worshipped by all right thinking people.Ry Cooder mined the rich seam of Spense guitar licks for a long time. I have a brilliantCD of Spense tributes (including the Carthy/Watersons). i've recorded Spense material with the Boat Band. He's just wonderful, either the solo stuff or the family singing recordings.Grunting, yes, but not a blues man. he might do a tiny percentage of slighty blues tinged stuff, but basically his music is Bahamian. A one-off genius.
