Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 17 May 03 - 07:30 AM Here are some threads which might deal with your question. You can use the Lyric & Knowledge Search (See above) to locate some of the other threads. Are Hurdy Gurdy's hard to play? |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: rodentred Date: 17 May 03 - 01:43 PM Cas - who was at the gig so we can advise on the sort of music in which you are interested? There are loads of recordings covering early music, French dance, song accompaniment, Eastern European styles. The instruments themselves are usually bought second hand or made to order. There are good makers and some best avoided. Lots of people baulk at the high prices (consider USD 2000 normal) and try to make their own - usually they end up as wall ornaments. |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: Lin in Kansas Date: 18 May 03 - 02:27 AM Cas--my good friends Alden and Cali Hackmann build hurdy gurdys in the Seattle area, Washington State, USA. They also list books and CDs as well as a lot of other fascinating info on their site, here. You might want to take a look. Are you in the states or in Europe? There is a hurdy gurdy festival held each year on the islands near their home (lots of info about that on their site as well). Interesting instruments! Strange sounds! Lin |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: GUEST,Sorcha Date: 18 May 03 - 09:20 AM Since you are in UK, try Hobgoblin. They might have kits. |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: rodentred Date: 18 May 03 - 05:17 PM Cas - I note you asked a similar question back in 2001 after the battle of Bosworth and got similar replies with links to Alden and Cali in the US. If you are in the UK there are plenty of contacts but you need to say where you are for useful advice. I would NOT advise a kit from Hobgoblin or (the same from the Bradford Early Music Shop) for a beginner. They do not work without a lot of fiddling and even then are only bottom end compared to what you can buy. If you really want one and are in the UK I might even be able to persuade my wife to sell you hers (lute back), which she does not use, if you are sufficently interested. They are also available from time to time on e-Bay but buy with care. You really should buy with someone who knows about these things or you'll get my aforementioned wall ornament. |

Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: SINSULL Date: 19 May 03 - 05:22 PM Dick Rogers from the Washington group built his own and hauled it around the Getaway two years ago. Where and how??? My question is "Why?" SINS, ducking for cover. |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 May 03 - 05:32 PM It's getting all the wasps in tune that is the problem...... but they do make a cheap alternative to a vibrator when insterted into a cigar tube.... Good luck - try PMing Ned Ludd - he has one and is a luthier to boot. LTS |
Subject: RE: hurdy gurdys..where and how From: GUEST,Pete Shaw Date: 19 May 03 - 06:05 PM Terry Warrington in the UK makes and plays the Hurdy Gurdy and other early music instruments. He's not on email but you can phone hime on 01733 262570 if in the UK or +44 1733 262570 outside. They're not cheap, because of the intricate design. There will probably be some at the Bagpipe Blowout this summer.http://www.bagpipesociety.org.uk/blowout2003.htm |
