Subject: Grammies Miss Mark Again From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 09 Feb 04 - 11:27 AM Some winners: Traditional Folk Album: ``Wildwood Flower,'' June Carter Cash. Contemporary Folk Album: ``The Wind,'' Warren Zevon. Musical Album for Children: ``Bon Appetit!'' Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. I can understand that June might fit the traditional category, but Warren Zevon??? Congrats to Cathy and Marcy - two greats that just keep going. Chris in Wheaton ps - saw the touring Slack Key trio last night - FANTASTIC!! - don't miss it if you get the chance. Thanks to George Winston for keeping this music alive. |
Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: Arnie Naiman Date: 09 Feb 04 - 05:27 PM Members of The Academy vote on nominations and awards. There are incufficient members of the recording folk music community willing to pay Academy dues in order to become members, and vote for good folk music recordings. It makes the traditional or contemporary folk categories a lucky crap shoot to get good and varied music voted on, and awards ususally go to very well known names or high profile - like the "Oh Brother" soundtrack (a lucky break last year, and a huge boom in bluegrass music awareness). I'm glad the Marcy and Cathy made it though - it should bring some noteriety to them and good children's music besides the usual Disney stuff that wins. Overall though my feeling is the Academy Awards is nothing but more big business crappola that we could do without. |

Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: michaelr Date: 09 Feb 04 - 07:24 PM Chris -- have you actually listened to Warren Zevon's last record? I'm aware that he's always had one foot in the rock'n'roll camp and one foot in the singer-songwriter ditch (much like his old friends and champions Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt). But if you listen to "Keep Me In Your Heart" you'll realize it's pure folk, like many of his older songs ("Carmelita" comes to mind). One has to keep in mind that the Grammys, like the Oscars and other awards orgies, are the entertainment industry's self-congratulatory back-slap wank-fest celebrating the past year's releases, and as such are not likely to give awards to Ewan MacColl, Woody Guthrie, or whomever you might think of as deserving a folk award. We had a thread here just the other day about "labels (read "categories"). My feeling is that these are more of a hindrance than a help, and that each musician deserves to be heard and evaluated on their own merit, regardless of classification. Who said "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture"? Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: open mike Date: 10 Feb 04 - 12:38 AM great quote michael! i would like to know who to attribute it to! I hope someone knows and will answer....I might want to quote that one again! |

Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: Art Thieme Date: 10 Feb 04 - 01:20 AM WOW !!!!!!! I'm dumbfounded. After all those years of being nominated, CATHY AND MARCY, finally and deservedly, WON !!!! Just last week they were here in Peru for a grand visit and dinner and I got to tell 'em, "By God, this is your year !!" But I'd told them that all those other years too. It simply must've been all those good vibes we laid on 'em in person. But really, of course, it was the superb musicianship, writing and arranging, all of it. They always pick great musicians for all of their projects. These two can play just about any kind of music that has ever been. I'm just so happy I can split a gut. WOW!!!! I'm starting to repeat myself and it's late--but this news has me so wired I'll not be able to sleep for sure. And I'm embarrassed to say that we never even watched the show the other night---or last night or whatever. -------------- All I can fumblingly mutter is that I couldn't be happier for both of them !!! WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!! Congratulations. Art and Carol Thieme (((WOW !!!))) |
Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: Big Mick Date: 10 Feb 04 - 09:15 AM Unlike some, I simply want to add a UNQUALIFIED congratulations to Cathy and Marcy. This award is long overdue and is completely justified. The voters got it right. All the best, Mick Lane |
Subject: RE: Grammies Miss Mark From: GLoux Date: 10 Feb 04 - 09:25 AM I am gratified to see that Cathy and Marcy WON a grammy after seeing them on the nominations list so many times. I'm also delighted to see ROUNDER as the label so many times...(Best Polka Album???)...I did a brief check and think that ROUNDER got more grammies than any other label...very interesting... -Greg |
