I heard this recently...about a ship in the great lakes that
brought trees (possibly to chicago) and which had an accident
and sank. The wife of the captain continued the tradition and
for 20 or 22 more years had a similar ship sail.

Go to 'Christmas Ship' on Google for history of the shipment that came to Chicago annually. Also Lee Murdock has recorded it on his album 'Folk Songs of the Great Lakes Region'

thanks...i think i must have heard it on an internet streaming radio
show which featured christmas songs...a good one to put on the must
learn list for next year...

i see mention of similar traditions in the Puget Sound area.
including a parade of ships near christmas time...for over 50 years.
