In your area (be specific, not just the state), how big is the influence of Celtic music? Being in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the influence over here is very high. I'm involved with the famous Danny O'Flaherty among others, and I love it.

(Speaking of which, if any of you are from Louisiana. Come and see me and Danny at the Celtic Festival in October and on St. Paddy's Day coming up this month at the Balladeer Festival in Downtown Lake Charles...But back to the point.)

I'd just like to know where the Celtic roots are in the world today. Other than the blatantly obvious place (IE: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, etc).

Slan go foill.

(I apologize for the lack of fadas, by the way. My computer doesn't have the option.)

Slough, Berkshire,England,-----Every Monday Night !! HUGE amounts of Celtic influence !! Where?? In a pub called "The Herschel Arms ". !!
This must be the best Irish Music session outside of Ireland !! Every week, you can listen to ,thanks to landlord Tom King, a regular ensemble of musicians, some Irish, some of Irish descent,& some with no Irish connections whatever, numbering around 10-20,and sometimes many more !! Apart from the "regulars",there are often visiting musicians----in the last 18 months, the pub has seen Paddy Keenan-Tommy O"Sullivan--Mike McGoldrick--Grace Kelly-Jarlath Henderson-Harriet Earis--Colman Connolly--Marc Guilloux( from Paris !! )--Paul Jutkewicz--Mick O"Connor--Luke Daniels-the list goes on !! Even two fine musicians from Toulouse !!All passionate about Celtic music,be it Irish,Scottish,or Breton !!So--!! Where are you gonna go on a Monday night in England ?? Why,the Herschel Arms in Slough,of course !!!

Howdy,

Here in Austin, TX., not as much Celctic
as I wish. Occasionally an Irish Fest in North
Texas, but I really would like to see more activity
in this area. Off Topic a little, but I really envy
what seems to be a thriving environment for
folk clubs in the UK.

If anyone from the Austin area knows of any good folk
'clubs' (other than ASG) or Celtic Associations,
I would love to know. As far south as any of that
seems to get is Lubbock.

I'm in the Pensacola, Florida area. We have a fair number of musicians who play Celtic music for fun, but not much in the way of a gigging scene. There are two so-called "Irish Pubs" in town. One of them, a small concern at Pensacola Beach, hosts a session on Thursday nights and occasionally books a Celtic band. The other is a huge place, more of a restaurant than a pub. They draw the type of crowd whose idea of Irish music is "The Unicorn" nestled in amongst a bunch of Jimmy Buffet songs.

By the way, Chris, some of the Pensacola/Mobile crowd used to make it over to O'Flaherty's in New Orleans every now and then, pre-Katrina of course. And a few Louisiana folks occasionally come over our way to join in the fun. A banjoist/fiddler who teaches Romance languages in Baton Rouge (name forgotten) and a fiddler/flutist named Richie from New Orleans are two that come to mind.

Brendan's in the Tampa area, Beer, about 400 miles from Pensacola. It's that upside-down "L" shape that Florida has, ya see.

However, our son lives in Tampa. I've bookmarked Brendan's website and may try to catch him sometime when we're down there for a visit.
