Subject: Last Shanty Swap at China Sea-11/26
From: Charley Noble
Date: 27 Oct 02 - 11:43 AM

You are cordially invited to participate in the Last Shanty Swap at the China Sea Marine Trading Co, 10 Dana St, in the heart of the Old Port, Portland, ME (207) 773-0081) on Saturday, November 23rd, gathering together at 4:00 PM and continuing until the propriators Capt. Bunker and Sharon kick us out. Members of Roll & Go will lead off with a few songs and then others may lead a song, request a song, or snore. This wonderful shop is chocker-block full of nautical antiques and oddities, straight out of the twilight zone. It's a great place to sit and sing sea music. And we'd like to know who is attending. Refreshments welcomed!

Now what's this with the "Last Shanty Swap"? Well Bunker and Sharon have to shift their business out of their current location in the Old Port at the end of the year, probably out of town but hopefully not too far away. Ideas about prospective locations would be welcome but at this point they would prefer to own the place rather than rent another building.

Anyway, other tenants in the building have already moved out and there will be even more space for us to gather and do what we love to do in the back of the store. Who's coming!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Not likely, unfortunately.

Seems like there's a major change in their physical space there between every shanty sing ya put on. (Italian restaurant moving in, Italian restaurant moving out, if I understand you correctly.)

By then I will be in terminal termpaper crunch time, and if I have any sense (ha) will be feeling poverty-stricken as well.

But you folks have a good time there.

Bill

Brían, Linn, Tom, Sinsull, and two or three others who have responded to this invitation directly, we'll look forward to seeing and hearing from you. What joy!

Bring a cushion if you need one; some of Bunker's sea chests are rather hard on the bottom.

Now where's Kendall, Barry, Jeri, Jean, and the rest of you that love to sing this stuff? Shake a leg!

Charley Noble

Ahoy There!

Have been wondering when a China-Seas Chanty-Hoot was going to come together again, and knowing that Cpt. Bunker's lease was on the rocks knew that our window of opportunity was closing fast.

Thanks to Charlie and Roll&Go for orchestrating this event.

Although China Seas won't be in the Old Port, perhaps, there are hopes that Steve & Sharon will be able to relocate not far away.
What with the shootouts between the "Hell's Angels" and "Devil's Disciples" that have been going on down there lately, I'd just as soon be meeting someplace with a little less potential for that sort of exitement. It might have been fun once, but we are getting a little old for that stuff!

In the meantime, we will keep our antennae extended for an alternative site. I have had a few ideas in the past and certainly remain open to suggeston.

My Brother has invited us to his Farm in NH that Sat. (23rd, right? the thread title says "11/26") for an early Thanksgiving. I'm actually inclined to beg off, since we put on a big do here on Thanksgiving Thursday, with about 20 of Aunt Martha's Family, and the prepatory cleaning frenzy is usually a bear. This year Martha Has some time off the week of the 24th, so we are not yet particularly committed one way or another. And then our elderly Mother's health, which has been poor for years, seems to be taking a turn for the worse - so I guess about all I can commit to at this point is that I'd love to join the merry Crew on the 23rd if things sort out so as to permit it. It's on the calender.
Should things change, I'll post an update.

Here's a real refresher, based on an old drinking song collected around Stonington, Maine, in the 1960's!

MERCHANT'S ISLAND

(Words by Charlie Ipcar © 1999
Tune: She's but a Lassie yet
Key: F(5/C))

G--C-G--------D-------G
Oh, the wind blew up 'bout nor'nor'east,
---------C-G--D7
Blew right up on Monty's beach;
---G------D7---------G-------D7
The men got drunk and the women too –
--------------------------G
'Round the pub the rum jug flew!

Chorus:

G
We'll shove around the grog, me boys,
------------------------------D7
Raise our mugs and make some noise;
------G------------------------C
We'll shove around the grog, me boys –
D7-----------------G
Down on Merchant's Island!

One thing that we know is true,
There's nothing like ol' Stan's home brew,
For on our toots we're pissed as newts –
Down on Merchant's Island...

Now, Kendall's not one to complain,
When he's in the fog or rain;
He'll sniff the air and if it's fair,
We're bound for Merchant's Island...

When Joanna's drained her final jar,
You'll find her clinging to the bar,
With wheel adrift, sheets to the wind,
She'll need a tow back home ag'in...

No one can drink as much as Greg,
And still be standing on his legs,
With decks awash and a gale to face,
You'll hear him cry, "Splice the main brace!"...

Then, Cindy blew in through the gate,
Drinking twice as fast for she come in late,
She raised that rum jug to her nose
"Tilt 'er up and down she goes!"...

Now, Sammy was a good old man,
But he could not make his jib-boom stand;
So he spliced it straight and true –
Now he's cruisin' good as new...

When we heard the final call,
Ol' Bill wasn't there at all,
He'd slipped his cable, sailed away,
But he'll be back another day...

Now, Cicely was the last come by,
She never drank but she said she'd try;
She drank so much of the ale and stout,
They closed the pub and threw us out...

What a glorious spree!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi sea song fans,
May not be in town for last shanty swap @ China Sea.
Does anyone know (any "Roll & Go" members around?) if song swap has been happening at the Portland Observatory? That was a fun event.
Thanks!

Seacrone-

The old Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill is a great place for shanty singing and we may revive that "tradition" next summer. The Observatory is an old octogon signal tower built in 1807 to help keep track of USO's, unidentified sailing objects.

However, do join us 11/23. This should be one of them penultimate sessions that will sustain folks for years. Do you remember back when...?

Nice Link, Brían. Here's the song we composed to help celebrate the Observatory successful renovtion (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 for chord placement):

THE PORTLAND OBSERVAT'RY

(Words by Charlie Ipcar © 2000
Adapted Traditional Tune: Bonny Ship the Diamond
Key: Dm)

Chorus:

Dm
Here's to Capt'n Moody,
-------------Am
Heave with a will!
-----Dm------------------Am
Who raised the Portland Ob-servat'ry,
-----------------Dm
High on Mun-joy Hill.

'Twas in the year eighteen-o-seven
Old Moody had a plan,
To build a signal tower
On Portland's highest land...

With his telescope in the lantern room,
He'd scan the Bay around,
And hoist a signal up the mast
When a vessel there he found...

'Twas in the War of 1812,
He beheld a thrilling sight,
As the Enterprise beat the Boxer,
It was one brutal fight...

In the Civil War, in '63,
The Rebels made a play,
From the tower we tracked the Cushing,
As she fled through Casco Bay...

In nineteen hundred and twenty-three,
The tower's work was through,
But hordes of tourists climbed the stairs,
To enjoy the view...

In nineteen hundred and ninety-five,
The tower was condemned,
But plans were made and money raised,
From hundreds of her friends...

Now the tower stands again,
From the elements defiant,
After all this work we're glad to know
She's Y-2-K compliant...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Ahoy, Charlie;

Will you be bringing a good supply of those recent Roll & Go CD's we've been hearing about? I don't know about the rest of the riff-raf, but I will likely be in the market for one of 'em!
No doubt playing it will evoke fond memories of our China Seas Hoots for years to come!

Don't ye know, Mates; Christmas is a' comin', and them folks from away'd prob'ly love t' have a nice album of some of our very own Maine local talent singin' some jim-dandy salty sea songs!

Is Cpt. "Bunk" stocking some of those CD's at China Seas while he can? I reckon he'd move a few between now and the last bell.

We've pretty much decided to beg off on the early Thanksgiving in NH, so it's looking pretty good for getting on board! Lookin' forward to it, to be sure!

Uncle Jaque et al-

Capt. Bunker and Sharon have a bail of the new Roll & Go: Outward Bound CD's and we would prefer that anyone who attends the Shanty Swap purchase CD's directly from them. But be assured we'll bring back-up supplies for Bunker and Sharon in case they run out.

Be good to have another open session at the Shop.

Say, Barry and Jeri, have you recovered enough from the Great Getaway to lead a few songs? We know you have to be careful of your delicate vocal chords, but we can provide you some soothing Cod Liver Oil if you like.

It's really not all that far, two or three days if you have a driver to share the road with!

Glad you're enjoying "Dead Dog Cider." Do you include the "Rise Again" break? We did this song last weekend for the benefit of about a hundred Unitarians and fellow travelers in Houlton, ME. It's a difficult song to sustain while you know the rest of the band is doing things with our stuffed Bendigo, provoking amazing changes of expression on the audience.

Refresh!

Here's a nice song, dedicated to our coastal friends in New Hampshire:

SALVAGE MEN, THE

(Words by ex-Coastguardman Joe McGrath © 1986
Adapted by Charlie Ipcar, 1993
Tune: varient of "Brandytree"
by Gordon Bok)

Dm------------------C------------------------Dm-------------------Am
Now on those dark and the moonless nights, when the wind can chew your soul,
--Dm ------------C---------------F---------C------Dm
It seems to raise the worst in men, out west of the Isle of Shoals.

Down to the beach in a column they come, in a march of death 'tis claimed;
No honor on that stretch of ground with plunder to be gained.
"Bring the torch, build the fire bright, if a ship be on the sea,
Then should her master be deceived, a salvage wreck she'll be!"

Chorus:

        ------------------C----------------Dm--------------Am
        Take no pride when men have died, by hearts so cold and cruel,
        -----Dm--------C---------------------F--------C---Dm
        If the salvage man be your friend, then the Devil go with you!

Upon the deck of a coastal bark, the watch cries through the gale,
"A light, a light, off the starboard bow, safe haven for to sail!"
"Now, helmsman, bring her head around; steer her for the lee;
No business have we here tonight upon this angry sea."
"Oh, Captain," cries the second mate, "We're close onto the shore;
I can smell the flats and the inland pine, and fear we'll sail no more." (CHO)

"Too late, too late, to save your ship!" – the salvagers do shout;
"You're too far in to take her back, too close to come about!"
And when she strikes and timbers split, stout men do weep and cry;
To know your fate is sealed would break a stronger man than I. (CHO)

So if some evening you should walk down by old Brooker's Beach;
Don't tarry when the waves roll in, as the gale blows from the east.
For on those dark and the moonless nights, when the wind can chew your soul,
It seems to raise the worst in men, out west of the Isle of Shoals. (CHO)(2X)

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Refresh!

Say, any more comin'?

Who's gonna lead this one?

SLOWING DOWN TO LETHARGY

(Words by Toby Fagenson; parody of "Rolling Down to Old Maui")

Now we love to sing of the open sea
As the sailors used to do.
But it seems each time that we sing these songs
They take longer to get through.
We have no place for for a lively pace
As we plough on ploddingly.
Let each note sustain,
And from oomph refrain,
As we head toward Lethargy.

Chorus:
Slowing down to Lethargy, me boys,
Slowing down to Lethargy;
We'll nail it hard with a big retard---
Slowing down to Lethargy.

If you wish to rush or you need to push
Won't you please control the urge,
As we sing each line with the energy
Of the average funeral dirge;
Six hellish months have passed away,
Or so it seems to be,
Since our shantyman this song began,
Slowing down to Lethargy.

He called this tune by the light of the moon;
Well, hello, here comes the sun!
Our tempo crawls, each syllable stalls,
And we've barely just begun;
Our song still booms, we are carried away
By our voices' glorious sound;
The verse is winding down at last;
Thank God we're chorus bound!

It's been far from fast, but we're home at last,
Now we're heaving into port;
As we disembark, hear some fool remark
That this song seemed far too short!
But don't you fret, we've a lot more yet,
And a snail's pace keeps its power,
As our voices boom into 'Fathom the Bowl'

Note: appears to be a line missing in the last verse.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The last verse should read:

It's been far from fast, but we're home at last,
Now we're heaving into port;
As we disembark, hear some fool remark
That this song seemed far too short!
But don't you fret, we've a lot more yet,
And a snail's pace keeps its power,
As our voices boom into 'Fathom the Bowl'
For at least another hour.

Sorry about that.

Sharon just e-mailed me from China Sea Marine Trading Co. to say she's sold the last of the new Roll & Go: Outward Bound CD's, and she needs another "bale". Never fear, Sharon, a runner is on his way to the Old Port as I type this message.

Singer Marie Dufresne is hoping to join us, a mainstay of the Bath-Brunswick Folk Club, as is storyteller Pat Gardiner, keeper of the Sidedoor Coffeehouse in Brunswick.

Oh, ye pinks an' posies,
Go down, ye blood-red roses, go down!

Charley, you have such delightful parodies! LOL!

Re: "Dead Dog Cider" and the "Rise Again" break, I plan to have the Seattle Song Circle folks do this song on Nov. 24. I'll be surprised if they don't spontaneously burst into the "Mary Ellen Carter" type refrain at that point in the song. At most, all I'll have to do is repeat the "Rise again" line with the MEC tune, and they'll take over from there!

"...while you know the rest of the band is doing things with ourstuffed Bendigo, provoking amazing changes of expression on the audience."   I'd love to see that, Charley!

Genie-

One of those glorious moments (ref. "Dead Dog Cider") happened in Sidney, AU, last year at a music party with members of the sea music group Roarin' Forties, who picked up on cue to the "Rise Again" break. What joy! Good luck with the Seattle folks, be gentle, and thank them for introducing me to "The Wreck of the Lady Washington" some 10 years ago.

When Charley lead Dead Dog Cider the rest of us have lots of time between choruses to ad lib as best we can. The dog is Charley's and it was his idea to have us do some of the other things we do. We added a few others on our own.

E.G., when Bendigo falls into the cider vat the stuffed bendigo hits the stage. When Bendigo floats to the surfave in the cider vat from which everyone is drinking we have the opportunity to pantomime the crowd's reactions. And when he sings the line about "hair of the dog" I believe that is the perfect time to pantomime extracting a hair from my mouth. Add to that his line about calling for Dead Dog Cider in a pub. He wanted me to call for it as he sang the line. I inadvertantly added the word "please" but he didn't like that. Now the ad libs run as follows:
Me: Dead Dog Cider!
Nor: Please!
Dick: Thanks!
Nor: My pleasure!
Me: Good Though!
Trust me, it's Charley's fault. He started it.

Well, on Kendall's thread Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee acknowledge that they're planning to attend the Shanty Swap. Looks like we'll have at least 30 good singers. Good thing we have the extra space in the back of the store, from the folks who moved out.

Rumor has it that Capt. Bunker composed a dynamite song about a tug that towed a distressed explosives ship out of Baltimore Harbor. Maybe we can chime in with the sound effects!

It was another great night with enough wonderful singers to comfortably fill the back room. Barry DID show up with cheese, smoked salmon and crackers. SINSULL brought a bottle of 18 year old Lagavulin. I wasn't expecting to drink, but yum!

The thing that makes these shanty (and lots of other types of song) swaps at China Sea Marine Trading Co. different from other song swaps is...Capt Bunker's stories. The guy really ought to write a book! What was the name of that ship that had a cargo of dynamite and blew up and the name of the tug that saved her crew at the expense of her own? I'd really like to see if there's more information somewhere.

The Lagavulin was "only" 16 years old (and not old enough to be up that late -- so we put it to bed!). THANKS SINSULL!!! Pleasantly smoky but not as dry as Laproaig.

What a lovely session of singing! (Hey, and the Greek pizza was very, very tasty, too!)

I'm listening to Jim Chard's bluegrass CD ("Monhegan Border Patrol") even as I type. Great to run into someone who can identify Richard Johnson songs.

Nice to see all these glowing reports on last evening. Everyone did show that had expressed interest, even Barry who had expressed reservations but was heard to mutter as he left "They's putting this to bed awfully early."

Kendall was in fine form, and getting stronger by the day. Did Coltman's version of "Patrick Spence" which is a killer song, the haunting "The Fisherman's Song", and responded to a request for "Ol' Fid" accompanied on a Fred Gosbee's 12-string guitar.

I was also pleased to see Jim Chard, ex-U.S. Coastguard, and a fine songwriter and flat-picker, along with Joe "Jets" Theriault who neglected to bring his button accordian.

Capt. Bunker does have a song version of his story about the Baltimore Harbor 1913 dynamite ship explosion and the heroism of the crew of the tug Atlanta. We'll pry it out of him, never you fear.

It was also good to see our friends from Castlebay, Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane. Fred did a wonderful rendition of Brian Chadbourne's "Shopping Shanty", a brillant parody of "Paddy Lay Back".

Speaking of dynamite, there was also that erupting bottle of hard cider that Uncle Jacque thoughtfully placed on the table in front of us.

There was also an invitation for a follow-up singing session at the Press Room on Friday, December 6th, when it's rumored that the "house string band" may be otherwise employed.

What a fine evening!

Oh, and Kendall - re me bitching about tuning: sometimes it's nice to just listen, especially when it's you doing Patrick Spencer. I just bitch out of habit. (And in this case, it was retrospectively ME I was complaining about.)

I'm convinced there was some sort of guitar tuning gremlin running around last night messing with people's tuners. When I got there, I tuned my guitar which does NOT normally go out of tune over the course of a few hours and my fiddle, which will go slightly out of tune with temperature and humidity changes. When I tried to play guitar with Kendall, I accused him of being flat, but it was me being sharp. Later, I started playing fiddle with him and he'd gone sharp. (Fiddle was in tune per my electronic arbitrator) Anyway, it was very weird - big changes in pitch, but only on guitars, and ALL the strings went about the same amount out.

Darned gremlin...

All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening. Jeri is one of the few people who dare to cross verbal swords with me, and, I love it! However I would like to get into a real (friendly) pissing contest with her!
Anyway, she made up for the hard time she gave me about tuning by backing me up on THE FADED ROSES OF DECEMBER.
I was also glad to see Sinsull (Mary) come out of her shell and sing in public. She has a sweet, old fashioned voice. Too bad I can't say the same for her! Well, no, actually, it's not bad.
Sure was nice to have all those folks coming from afar; Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon, Barry Finn, Jeri, Fred and Julia. Those of you who have not heard Julia play the harp don't know what you are missing.
Cap'n Bunker enthralled the whole crew with his story about the dynamite ship. Finish that song, Cap'n!
Man, it was so good to be able to sing after a solid year of no voice! I'm rusty as hell, but, it sure helped to have a pretty girl ask me to sing a certain song.
This is a group of which I am pleased to be a member.

I was too tired and keyed up to post last night. This was the very best swap so far. Lots of music, poetry, stories, new faces, old friends, and laughter.

The acCOWnt of the cow causing UDDER destruction out of the sky is classic.

Kendall's portrayal of Neptune mid the recitation of a Ruth Moore poem was perfect. Jeri is the only one I know who can keep the crusty old captain in line. Bravo!

Fred and Julia offered beautiful harmonies and some hilarious parodies. Good to see Naemanson again - it's been a while. Barry and his buffet were welcome additions as were Uncle Jaques and Brian's pennywhistles. And I was very grateful to Linn and tom for getting me through Three Score and Ten. It is embarrassing when the lyrics just up and go.

As for "sweet and old fashioned": I will be sure to give Kendall a dose of my best "Scarlett O'Hara" coyness. I do declare, Captain.I had no idea you were such a rogue. Oh fiddle dee dee! Well there's always tomorrow...

Ye know, Mates; that chanty hoot last night did me more good than a $125 visit to the shrink; I don't know about you, but I NEEDED that!

Even Ol' Aunt Martha, my long-suffering RAFG (Responsible Adult Female guardian) enjoyed it, and graciously put up with our pipe-smoke (she's got kinda feebish lungs, y'know) to stick it out to the end.

Charlie, deah; that wan't jes' no ordnary cider; That was a bottle of DEAD DOG Cider! I done brung it 'specially in honor of you & Roll & Go... not to mention the memory of our dear departed ol' 'Bednego!
Cpt. Bunker and I took it out on the loading dock to open it, as it fumed and frothed and sputtered a bit (all over the alley). Them whats worked up the courage to try it afterwards claimed that it wan't all that bad, and they seemed to be in reasonable fair condition when they left later. Just so's you'll feel better about it, those little pink "floaties" in there were cranberry raisins (albeit somewhat bloated), and not, as some speculated, composted dog parts.

It was most gratifying to see some of my music-loving Friends whom I had invited appear - several from the 3rd Maine Reenacting/ Living History Community.
Cpl."Mike" McCormick was there for a little while early on, and then we were joined by Assistant Surgeon Scott Scroggins, his Lady Heather, and little 3-Month-old Daughter "Katie". Of course Katie made the rounds of many of the "Mommies" in attendance (including Aunt Martha), and I didn't see or hear a bit of fussing; such of the festivites she stayed awake for she seemed quite attentive to and to enjoy quite as much as any of us! We may just have another up-and-coming "Folkie" in our midst!

Also with us was a dear Buddy, "Gail"; we have been co-workers on two different jobs at one time or another, one in the "People" business and the other in the "things" realm (it's a long story...) - escorted by her friend "Scott" who is, rumor has it, an active "Barbershop" Singer. He seemed kinda bashful back there, and I didn't want to scare him off too soon... but if we don't get at least one song out of 'im by the 3rd session, we may have to have Naemanson give 'im a bit of a squeeze - like a set of bagpipes - and see if we cain't loosin 'im up a bit! };^{)~

Gail's Daughter is somewhat of a Musical prodigy who is seriously looking into learing the fiddle - and saving up for an instrument. I was hoping to introduce her to some of you Fiddlers - but alas she was playing in another concert!

The Press Room is a fairly long haul from here, and I'm a little paranoid when it comes to navigating in an unfamiliar city - but I may really need a music fix by then sufficiently to be tempted.

there is a song I've been working on which just seems to be a natural for Kendall, for some reason, and I think he could present it a lot better than I can. (Lordy, it sure is good to hear that crusty old Salt sing again!) It's one I got the lyrics for off of Mudcat, and lacking the music, went ahead and composed some... which seems to work really well. At least the folks I've performed it for so far seem to like it. Since it has nothing to do with the Sea, I left it alone last night but would love to run it by some of you guys & see what you think. It is ".30 US on The Wall" (you may recall the posting about it) from Alaska, circa 1930's.

China Seas First Mate Sharon took some top-drawer pictures with her nifty digital camera, and had some of them printed out within moments. they are corkers! Sharon; if you read this; you can send the pictures to Pene Azul at the E-dress in one of the links here as an E-mail attachment, or to me and I can forward them on - after "tweaking" a bit on my graphics program if need be (cropping, ajusting resolution, trimming file size etc.). If you get a choice, send them as *JPG or *.GIF files, as I find that most people can open them with common browsers or programs, and they are not as "fat" as some others.

And Sins; next time you light off with one of my favorite songs like "Three Score and Ten", couldjja kindly wait 'till I ain't got me gob packed jam full o' pizza!!??? I have a hard enough time getting down to those low baritone notes (and in that key, for some reason, an octave higer would've been stretching the other end of the vocal range) as is, and all that cheeze and pepperroni don't help none!

Jaque, I never thought those floaters were orinally part of a dog. Came OUT of a dog, yes, but not dog PARTS. I never did get to try any. Wish I'd had a chance to talk to you a bit, but there was too much singing and stuffing of faces.

Looked to me like the results of multiple cat neuterings. Nasty to say the least but I did get a taste of the cider and it was good. Uncle Jaque, you have to get there earlier next time and get out of the "peanut gallery".

I do believe that is the first time I have heard Jet sing. He plays a squeeze box usually. A shame - he has a wonderful voice.

Uncle Jaque-

I too must confess I had my suspicions what them "floaties" might be, and there was no way I was gonna sample them. I do believe, though, I heard Kendall mutter "Good, though!"

I must get the words to Brian Chadbourne's "Shopping Shanty."

Capt. Bunker and I would love to have a tape of the proceedings. We'd be glad to pay for the tape and postage. Just let us know where to send the money.

Charley, I think we need to pay you for R&G CDs??? We may need a few more before our tenure ends at 10 Dana Street.

Can anyone tell me where Barry Finn got that incredible voice?

Someone should compose a song entitled "The Loo at the China Sea", something that would describe the journey lurching down the back stairs to that dark basement stacked high with flotsam and jetsam, to the wee room with the notice about flyfishing which probably only the male members of our group fully appreciated...

The golden voice of Barry Finn? Maybe his Uncle Mickey could it explain it.

Even before Saturday, I had been looking for the photocopies I had of The Shopping Shanty which I had gotten from Brian Chadbourne, when?, way back in the '80s. Somehow it had never made it into my electronic song files. When Fred & Julia sang it, it tweaked Tom's memory at least and he pointed out that I had it filed in our collection of Christmas photocopies, etc. -- we usually pull it out at The Press Room at some point before the end of December.

Okay, so memory thus tweaked, I pulled out my copy and I'm in the process of typing it up. Charlie -- I'll e-mail you a copy in a few minutes.

Question of etiquette:
I saw several tape recorders at the Saturday Shanty Swap and I wondered whether the "professionals" in the group had been asked for permission. Several members there had CDs available. I arrived late so I don't know how it was arranged. No one objected while I was there. Just curious.

Sinsull-

"Recording at music sessions" is a question of etiquette and if I was not familar with Brian and Linn whom I observed recording I as "host" would have been concerned enough to raise the question with them. I hope no one who was singing or telling a story was overly concerned.

I'm pleased that some of the old Portland Folk Club special events were taped, which makes it possible to recover songs from members who have passed on the other places or plains of exisitence, or both!

At the same time I would be very much put out if someone taped a person's original song or story and posted it on Mudcat, or used it commercially, without getting permission.

Looking forward to attending the Press Room gathering on Friday, 12/6. Let's start a new thread!

I taped -- for my own personal use, definitely not for resale -- because I had seen that Brian taping at the last one was acceptable (and I know his was for personal, not commercial use). I very often tape sessions, singarounds, parties -- and even some stage performances of friends. I don't hide it. I sometimes ask someone to sing a song into the recorder for me, especially if the song is unavailable in any other form. It's certainly not for commercial use (and the quality is definitely not professional), just to learn songs and remember a wonderful afternoon or evening. And to tape my own contribution to the merriment, of course. (It's useful to know what I sound like, sometimes.)

And it's not to avoid paying money for anyone's CD or tape -- I've purchased Roll & Go's CD several months ago and I bought Jim Chard's at the sing (and it doesn't have any of the songs that he sang Saturday on it). And I own multiple recordings of Kendall and Castlebay and have for 20 years.

Copies are available -- but only to "family", singers who were there. And just for the cost of tape and postage -- negative profit on this end, if you want to think of it like that.

Well! At last! Thanks to Charley I can finally access the Mudcat. I've been having a tough time getting in this week. Plus the admiral was visiting which was a bit of a pain in the tush and took up way too much of my time.

I enjoyed the evening, lots of great music and good friends, good drinks, and great stories from Capt Bunker. We need to get that guy to start singing but he had a good excuse. He and Sharon have been working very hard trying to make the store a success. Now they have to move... Life ain't fair.

As far as the "loo" in the basement, I'd be curious to know what has encrusted the sink so badly that its function has to be guessed at. I've seen some dirty fixtures in my day but that one takes the cake. I'm guessing the new owners of the building will have to hire a HazMat company to remove it. No wonder the women were willing to walk upstairs to use the other bathroom.

Brian has always taped at the sessions we've sung at. I never gave it any thought. The ettiquette at folk festivals is that taping is allowed at workshops but not at concerts. I think what we've been doing can easily be considered more of a workshop than a concert.

By the way, on the way out the door we picked up one of Roll & Go's "Outward Bound" CD's, and have been playing the paint off of and bellowing myself hoarse along with it ever since.

I would encourage anyone who has not done so yet to do the same; when I really get to missing our times together up at the Observatory or downtown at China Seas, playing this album is nearly the next best thing to being there!
I understand that the sales of this album go towards a very worthy cause, as well...

And many hearty, heartfelt thanks to Cpt. Charlie and the Roll & Go Crew for organizing, promoting, and coordinating these wonderful shenanigans, as well as to Cpt.Steve Bunker and 1st Mate Sharon for graciously hosting us at China Seas! 3 lusty cheers and a broadside salute to ye all, Mates!

We understand that The China Seas Crew will start packing up and moving out around December 28. Steve has rented a truck, and some of us in the Reenacting / Living History Community, as well as Members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War & Auxilary may be helping out as much as we can in order to save them the expense of hiring a moving crew. I would not be surprised if any of the Portland area Folkie/Sea-Chanty family were to show up in comfey jeans and bring muscles, that all hands could be used on deck! Packing up, as well as moving all of that wonderful nautical "stuff" into storage in Gray is going to be a time and labor intensive operation; the more hands on the windlass, the faster the anchor will be home!

Potential Volunteers might contact Steve and/or Sharon for details as to specifically when and where, and what if anything (boxes, tape, etc. I suppose) might be useful.

I would not be the least bit surprised if Charlie N. comes up with a "Moving Chantey" just for the occasion, creative soul that 'e is.

And one last round of "Leave Her Johnny" might be appropriate just before the last lantern is extinguished and main hatchway secured... what d'ye think, Mates?

Nicely said, Uncle Jaque, and thanks for the compliment about our CD which can be ordered from our website at www.rollandgoseasongs.com

Roll & Go members are planning to make ourselves useful for "moving day," difficult as that may seem to some. Our only request to Capt. Bunker and Sharon was that we didn't want to play a part in deciding what went into what box. I'm sure we can come up with something appropriate to sing, although we would also welcome suggestions!

How about a "Packing Shanty", Charlie?

If anybody I know could come up with one (and a corker at that) on short notice, you be de MAN, Mate!

I'm looking forward to instigating some casual interaction between area "Folkies" and "Living Historians" (Reenactors)- and have a real good feeling that we're going to hit it off famously! Having hung out in both camps a bit, i continually discern a host of kindred spirits amongst both.

Although it's going to be sad to leave the Dana St. China Seas, between the many Friends and cohorts of Steve & Sharon, it is reasonable to expect an even brighter future for them as well as all of us in the area who revere and celebrate our rich Maritime heritage and traditions.

Despite my reputation as one of those oxymoronic "Conservative Folkies", this is one form of communalism I can enthusiastically support and get involved in!

We'll be looking forward to meeting and working with dear friends all next Month down at China Seas, Aye!

i AM BACK. mY COOKIE IS BACK. aND THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES TO MY QUESTION. i NEVER OH dAMN! jUST BACK AND ALREADY SCREWING UP THE CAPSLOCK!

It never occurred to me that anyone would try to make commercial use of the recordings. In fact, I think it is wonderful to have "real" music from those we love/admire/revere/enjoy. Just wondering about the etiquette.

Charley - I have been carefully folding the packing paper and cartons from my move hoping to find someone who could make use of them. I will be thrilled to deliver them to Capt. Bunker at his leisure. I will PM my new phine number.

Finally, I have measured and re-measured the dimensions of my living room/dining room and believe we can fit a shanty swap in a little snugly but comfortably. Early January? Just bring some chairs. Captain and Mrs. Bunker can sit and sing through this one and even bring the parrot if he promises not to harm the kitties. There are even some spare beds for anyone needing a place to crash. Maybe we can entice some out-of-towners.

We just had 19 Family Members at our Yarmouth quarters for Thanksgiving, and have had upwards of 25 in years past without feeling overly crowded.

Aunt Ma'tha is actually receptive to the idea of hosting a sing-along here some time - I envision something to the effect of the "Circle of Song" get-togethers that Naemansom used to host at his home in Bath, ME.

By re-arranging the furniture in the Parlor as we do for Family gatherings we could get 15 or 20 participants in comfortably, a few more to be "cozy". There is a spinet piano in the Parlor in decent condition which we could have tuned for such an occasion if need be (although it's not too bad now) and 3 whole bathrooms - 2 down and 1 upstairs, as well as 2 spare bedrooms, our Daughter having grown up and moved on.

In warmer weather the 27' motor-home in our driveway will sleep 5 or 6 if they get along together well. We sometimes use it as a little "Guest Cottage" for visitors who like a little more privacy when visiting. We have a porch and deck quite suitable for BBQ in the Summer as well.

Yarmouth, as you may know, is sort of between Portland and Brunswick on the coast, right next (South) to Freeport and right on I-95 and Rt. 1.

Keep it in mind as a possible option, eh?

The thread that wouldn't die! Well, we did all have a great time, and we do want to help Steve and Sharon do their move, and maybe even find them a new home where we can hang out in the style we'd like to become accustomed to. Much as I love our sea songs, I also like to sing a few other songs but I would urge people to try to find some "public" space, so that "new" people feel welcome to drop in. Private homes and church spaces in my experience don't do that, although they can be an important retreat.

Of course, the downside of any "public" space you find is that it's bound to be a marginal one, doomed to go belly up once infiltrated with the breath of folkies. Do you really want to know how many business owners actually DIED while they hosted Portland Folk Club events? How many fled to Miami to escape our death aura? I can give you names and dates and maybe even a song...Just be warned. This is not something you should be commiting yourselves to lightly. Before I post this I probably should be more sober.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Dani-

If you're tempted to come up this way, consider centering your trip around a 3rd Saturday. That's when our Maine continguent gets together with our NH friends at the Press Room Pub in Portsmouth, NH, 3:30 to 7:30 pm. It's 4 hours of leisurely swapping songs of the sea, both shanties as well as forebitters, with occasional other oddities added.

I'm not particularly good at remembering names. What song did you lead at the Shanties Workshop at the Getaway?

And where in NC do you get together to sing? Some of us have friends with the Triangle Folk Song Club, Winston/Salem.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
