I can't forget the man who was my musical mentor and life mentor for that manor. Bruce Jay Pascow of The Washington Squares>! He passed on early January of 94, but lives on in memory to everyone who knew him.

And talking of which.. I've had a major domestic since I failed to include my Martin D28.. she's had the major sulks ever since
There's a couple of "endearments" that have raised my eyebrows.. the ELO Mbo?? .. I won't say I didn't like then.. indeed some of their tracks got the old foot taping, I'm just wondering why they are a "Love of your life".. now don't get me wrong, I never condemn anyone for their musical tastes.. heck mine are diverse enough as it is.. unless of course they like the Clancy Bros or the Spinners (here I'm ducking to avoid low flying household objects)..
I can't even begin to list my loves in the world of blues cos it just about encompases everyone, though Robert Johnson must be up towards the top along with Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson
Áine you have aroused my curiosity as I've never heard of most if not all the Irish artists you mentioned.. yeah okay I'm English and know diddly squat.. I'd like to learn more about your "favourites".. please drop me an email with any info.. [e-mail]

Mick, there are many reasons why I love the Electric Light Orchestra. So many to say...so many to say. First, let me say that I never experienced ELO firsthand. I was born in 1978, the hight of their career, and was only 7 when they broke up in '86. I heard one of their songs on a Classic Rock station (I had only been listening to rock musiv for less than a year then) and later bought one of their records at an "antique" shop for $2.50. I became hooked by their catchy sounds, great lyrics, and their quasi-classical stylings (I like classical music very much). Most impressive is Jeff Lynne, who was the lead singer, songwriter, and producer--he has such a hold on creating good music--there's not one song he wrote that I don't like. After the band broke up, he went on to produce his idols, the members of the Beatles in their solo endeavors, including George Harrison's "Cloud Nine," Ringo Starr's "Time Takes Time," and most recently, Paul McCartney's "Flaming Pie," as well as all the great Beatles "lost songs" like "Free As A Bird." Well anyway, here I am 3 years later and own all but 4 of their albums (soon to be 3...) I am very influenced by their music, and you can detect hints of it in my ELO/Celtic mix, because of them I love cellos, and I even can imitate Jeff's voice. All in all, I must say that they're my favorite band in the world, and their music is (well, almost) the best music of all! THAT'S WHO I LOVE!

First off you've got to "come clean".. it's my quest if you like for the new millenium.. i.e. get everyone out of the protective shields and declare themselves on the internet, if not elsewhere..
I'm Mick Lowe and want everyone on the mudcat/web to know it..
As for ELO I admire all you say about them, especially Jeff Lynne. I must admit my view of them is slightly different as I have traced the career of Roy Wood from the Move.. through Wizzard and into the ELO and having seen Roy Wood several times in whatever guise, have always been struck with the impression that he has sought out the world of music as a profession rather than through love.. I can't help get the feeling that the output of whatever group he has been involved with, is more contrived to make money rather than being an artistic stand.
That's not in any way an attempt to ignore any "& advances/ground breaking/etc.. that Roy Woods has done in the world of pop music.. I think Wizzard were the first group to use cellos.. no doubt I'll be corrected if wrong.
Although I wouldn't place ELO at the top of my list of groups who have a profound influence on the way my personal musical career has progressed, I some how take great delight that they have in influencing yours Mbo
If it were not so quite late here on my side of the pond I'd expound further on other groups who have the "classical" feel as to their music

Alright, Mick. I'm Matthew Richards and I LOVE ELOOOOO! BTW Roy Wood was in ELO for their first album, in which they used cellos--he left before their first single, the epic "10538 Overture" was released. He later formed Wizzard, and ELO had no more to do with him. I've never listened to any of Roy Wood's music--ELO's my bag. Watch out, "What Did I Do" may show up soon on the Mudcat Songbook.

I am particularly fond of the planet Earth, and am sorry that so many future generations will not be able to see it in its full glory before we wrecked it; and I am privileged to have lived at the tail end of it, and have worked a little to try and slow the mess down. I love all the extraordinary things that we can still see, but that are dying and will not last the next century -- the Serengeti Plain and most of central Africa, the last remnant of the true ancient world; the glories of SouthEast Asia, which will be over in 50 years; the black rhino and the Java tiger; the cheetah and the panda; and other lesser known species going under at a rate of 20,000 per year. The richness of the oceans and seas, now draining away. The possibility of finding a part of the world unsaturated with the presence of mankind. They will not know the wild spaciousness we have seen, and they will be poorer for it.

Brian Bowers is a folk singer/auto harp player. The only album I've heard of his is "The view from home." This is all the real info I have on him. My dad has "The View From Home."

If I had to try to describe him, I'd say he has kind of a simular voice to Bill Stains. But more auto harp, less guitar.

I agree with a lot of what you say, couldn't stand Scooby Doo, but I'm sticking with Fred and Barney, although there is no question that it was a cartoon version of the Honeymooners. But I enjoyed it.

Now as far as cartoon characters go, Bugs is my all time favourite. I loved his attitude. Warner Brothers were certainly the masters of cartoons. Foghorn Leghorn (now I say listen when I's talkin to you son), Yosemite Sam (when I says whoa, I means whoa), Pepe Lepew, Daffy, the whole bunch of them. Brilliantly written stuff. I never was a Road Runner or Tweety fan though.

banjamin, you're right on about brian bowers. he plays the mandocello, too. and he's also six foot four, two hundred and forty pounds, with a heart of equally huge proportions. he has the clearest most beautiful west virginia mountain tenor, and a way with the simplicity of music... it's like each song is distilled and presented in its own shining perfect skin.

he tells stories and makes you feel loved.

damn, he's awesome.

the albums are great, but nothing compares to his live performance.

I can't stomach the cartoons I did as a kid...though Bugs Bunny might be the exception--if I had to watch any. And I couldn't ever stand "Pepe le Pew" or however the name was spelled....

I will admit that some of today's animated shows are growing on me...Rugrats...Simpsons (though I never have the time to watch them...and am usually outvoted)...then there are lots of Children's storybooks now animated that I like: Little Bear; Franklin; Kipper (though I am partial to Tiger)....

and to get on the music topic again: I didn't mention either...The Andrews Sisters, or Perry Como....heck, I love the Big Band era and Balladeers of yesteryear! (Well before my time!)

Ralph McTell wrote a lot of the songs used in "Billy Connolly's World tour of Scotland"... my favourite being "The Islands". Van (the man) Morrisson wrote "Celtic Heartbeat" the end song....
