Subject: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: katlaughing Date: 23 Sep 10 - 12:28 PM We've read all about the P-Vine, the hundreds of plantings of rhodies and all, the wild critters making friends, and the fun Bobert has playing in the dirt, now you can, too...P-Vine wants to live closer to her kids and grandbabies, so their farm is on the market. Never hurts to pass the word along, esp. if it helps a fellow Mudcatter, so take a gander and "psssttt, pass it on, please?!" Bobert's Farm...looks like a great place for a Mudcat Retirement Home! Good luck, Bobert & P-Vine! |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Amos Date: 23 Sep 10 - 04:13 PM Really, though, Bobert, that is one beautiful spread you got out there. Mebbe you should keep it and buy the P-vine a Cessna. You got enough room for a landing strip. Put pink strobe runway lights on the sucker, and she'll go for it!! Honest!! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Little Hawk Date: 23 Sep 10 - 05:05 PM I'm disillusioned! I thought Bobert lived in a ramshackle hillbilly shack that was half falling down, with feral pigs roaming the uncut trash-strewn lawn, and a still out back at the edge of the woods. A real man of the people. Instead I find he is livin' like Boss Hog in a mansion on the hill!!! Oh, the shame of it all. ;-D |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 23 Sep 10 - 05:05 PM Thank's, kat, fir the assist... Snow??? Usually about 4 to 5 snows a winter with the average bein' around 8 inches... Last winter??? Don't ask... BTW, Amos, the P-Vine and flyin' don't mix... When we first met I took her up in a Cesna and had to bring the 'ol gal right back down... She freeked!!! Smoke house ain't a smoke house no more... Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: PoppaGator Date: 23 Sep 10 - 05:29 PM That real-estate listing should reveal the acreage. I visited once (sometime in '06, while on Katrina evacucation) and was pretty impressed at the size of the spread; they seemed to own the whole top of a mountain. Well, a hill, anyway. Bobert was still in the midst of a lot of interior renovation at the time. Now that the place is all fixed up (I assume), too bad they feel the need to leave. The location is pretty remote, though, so I can understand P-Vine's concerns. I thought I was going to exit the interstate at Luray and find my way to the homestead in 15-20 minutes, but NO! By the time I finally arrived, I was already nervous about getting back on the road (from exile in New Jersey to visit and start work on my damaged home in New Orleans), and didn't enjoy the visit as much as I should have. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Sep 10 - 05:47 PM Grandbabies? Sounds like a young family. What are you planning to do if they move, Bobert? "The average American family moves every five years. This equals about 16 times throughout the average lifetime. On average, each move will take approximately 50 boxes, or 800 boxes throughout a lifetime. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 37.1 million people moved in 2009." |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: gnu Date: 23 Sep 10 - 06:00 PM It certainly could be a grow op opportunity for the right buyer. If you'll look back here in the orchard and along the woods edges, you'll see lots more opportunities to grow herbs and spices out of the view of pesky neighbours and the DEA. Ahhh, that's the Department of Ecology Administration. Yeah, that's it. If you are actually interested, you shouldn't wait too long to make an offer. I have shown this property three times in two days and I know I am not the only agent who has shown it. Matter of fact, I wish I could swing buying it right now myself. Opps... gotta take this... hello?... yes, it's still for sale... I am at the property right now... can I call you back? |

There are days and days that go by that the only folks I see (or hear) is the P-Vine and our 4 cats... I like it taht way and the properties we're lookin' at around Charlotte have privacy, too... Come to think about it, I've spent most of my life livin' in places that have privacy... Kinda used to it... The house is being shown tghis Saturday by the very same agent we bought it from 5 plus years ago... Man, that would be fittin' if her people bought it... Movin' ain't gonna be easy... Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 23 Sep 10 - 09:15 PM Well, Sins... I donno... I think this farm will look purdy much in 50 years as it does today... I mean, it's very isolated as P-Gator said... Back up to the Shenandoah National Park so you can walk, or take a 4 wheeler ATV for miles and miles and miles and.... That's it's amin sellin' point... The mean ol' developersw ain't gonna ever mess it up... Might of fact, provided we get it sold, I'm gonna miss it.... I got 5 years of very hard labor in it and I hate to loose it but, hey, ih the words of Dr. Phil, "When mama ain't happy, no body happy" so I gotta do what a "wussy" man gotta do... But it will be fine... I've had 5 plus wonderful year here and 20 years back in the Wes Ginny mountains so I reckon I can get used to a little flat land... Prolly walk with a limp but, hey... BTW, GfonS... I'm kinda chockin' that little post off to PMS... Of course, it could be insanity but I'm givin' you the benefit of the doubt... ****grin****.... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 23 Sep 10 - 09:43 PM You would have to bring that up, wouldn't you, WYSuz... Unfortunately we are in the process of taggin' plants that we're takin'... Last time it was 550 plants... I'm hopin' to keep it at less than 100 this time... Well, not exactly, seein' as the P-Vine is growin' on lots from cuttings so we have at least 500 but they will be smaller... Okay, prolly 500 in total but most cuttings in small pots... I'm gonna have to find some dependable help in NC 'cause I'm gonna need some help with plantin' after we come up with an overall design... Man, I'd much rather talk about moving shop tools... Think I'm gonna buy a used 20 foot "sea container" and set up the tool room/ hardware store in it... I can have it hauled and set up where ever so I'll have my tools and stuff... We allready had a skimish over it today and I think the P-Vine understands that if I'm gonna move 500 plants then I want my tools... I think she gets it but I expect several more skirmishes over this... Normal... B~ |

Just putting the last few touches on having the house ready to show tomorrow... Then, as per usual, the P-Vine's imagination has gotten the best of her and she is convinced that a black locust tree is gettin' ready to fall over in one of her gardens so it's... ...last minute {{{{{{{{PANIC!!!}}}}}}}}}... I don't think the tree is anywhere close to fallin' but, hey, I'm just the "man" and a man's thinkerator ain't right when a womanz has her mind made up on somethin' even when her mind is wrong... So, seein' as this particular tree is in the middle of the gardens she has our tree-guy comin'... Heck, if it were up to me I'd just go out and park my tractor about where I thought the top would fall and cut it down and let it fall on the tractor's ROPs (Roll Over Protection) and then none of her plant would get hurt but... ...like I said... I just the "man"... B~ |

Secondly, which LP is that Ol'ster??? Well, my tree guy just left... The weather is pleasant, but it seems like everything wants to slow down and rest a bit before winter comes. Unless, of course, one is a migrating bird. |

I really regret that we didn't have more time, or at least that I couldn't have spent my little time with you two in a more relaxed manner. By the way ~ are we all familiar with the phrase "buying the farm" as an expression meaning to be killed? Get shot while serving the Army (US Army, anyway) and your GI insurance will allow your folks to pay off the mortgage on the family homestead. I've been wondering if the expression were commonly known throughout the English-speaking world, or just to us 'Murcans ~ when I saw the thread title the other day, that's the first thing I thought... |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: frogprince Date: 24 Sep 10 - 09:38 PM I've been accustomed to the expression "buying the farm" for dying all my life. As it happened, I think that early in life I heard a semi-literal usage for it a number of times, referring to some small plane pilot killed in a rural crash - sort of "claiming" a patch of farm land by staking it out with his cadaver. Poppagator's explanation of the origin of the expression rings truer for me, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 24 Sep 10 - 09:52 PM Well, Dougie... Here's the deal... If I "convey" with the farm then I get to stay where I am very content: a Virginny mountain holler... But the downside??? Ahhhh, no P-Vine 'cause this ol' gal is like, ahhhh, out-a-here!!! Yesterday!!! So what's a wuss to do??? I mean, this ain't rocket surgery... So it's off to Carolina witha banjo on my knee... But I swear on my grandmother's Bible that I will never, ever root for no Carolina team!!! I don't care if it's, ahhhhh, the North Carolina Olympic Tiddley Winks Team... No rootin'... Period!!! Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Rapparee Date: 24 Sep 10 - 10:39 PM Actually, to "buy the farm" meant a "farm" about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide and 6 feet (or so) deep. Even the current USD 100,000 serviceman's life insurance wouldn't pay off the mortgage on a farm. Naturally when I want it I can't find my copy of the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" but Snopes puts the use of "buy" or "bought" meaning killed back to 1825. "Become a landowner" was, according to the same source, a slang term for being killed in WW1. |

I don't know what's happend to the real estate market up your way (it's gone to hell here)but I should think you would have little trouble selling it. Good luck! DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: gnu Date: 25 Sep 10 - 06:35 PM It's all about finding the right buyer. When I sold my camp (sniff) I couldn't get anyone to buy it for nearly two years... a $35,000 camp, but it was on a one acre government lease. NOBODY wants to have anything to do with the government. I found a buyer. Had I still been asking $25k, I would have got close to that, but I was happy to get $18k (a profit for me in the long run). Sometimes, ya gotta sit on sommat for a while. But, I don't think Bobert will have to sit too long... it's beautiful. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wanna Buy the Farm? Bobert's Sellin'! From: Bobert Date: 26 Sep 10 - 08:44 AM Well, maeve... We went out yesterday and put surveyer's tape on the plants that do not convey... Ain't gonna be as bad as when we moved here from Wes Ginny... That was right at 550 plants... I think this time it may be closer to 50 that will be moved... Okay, we have a couple three hundred more that are growing in pots or growing in the heeling bed that we're growing on from cuttings... And if we get some rain then we'll take some more cuttings and start them but at least these plants are very manageable and can live in pots quite nicely... As fir this farm being a retirement home??? Maybe??? Ya'll take up a collection and buy it... That fine with me... We'll send ya'll pics of the new joint ion Charlotte... B~ |
