As you successfully identified Barry Skinner, can you help with another track from my archive? John the Gun, recorded around 1973. I have a whole concert on tape, by someone whose name escapes me at present.

John the Gun

Could it be one of the Dransfields?

That is a possibility, because I certainly did see Barry live. Good thinking.

I forwarded the song to a friend, who also thinks that it might be the Dransfields.

It's me again - The Dransfields played on the original Sandy Denny recording of the song (you can check this via Google) so that is a clue.

"The Dransfields played on the original Sandy Denny recording of the song"

That would be Sandy's The North Star Grassman and The Ravens which featured:

Sandy Denny, vocals, piano, acoustic guitar;
Jerry Donahue, electric guitar;
Richard Thompson, 12-string, electric and acoustic guitar, bass, accordion, vocals;
Trevor Lucas, acoustic guitar, backing vocals;
Buddy Emmons, pedal steel guitar;
Pat Donaldson, Tony Reeves, bass;
Gerry Conway, Roger Powell, drums;
Ian Whiteman, piano, flute organ;
Barry Dransfield, violin, backing vocals;
Royston Wood, Robin Dransfield, backing vocals;
Strings arranged by Harry Robinson

Charlotte (had to check her copy of the record)

I think that is pretty conclusive then, especially since I checked another song in the concert, Lots of little soldiers, which has been recorded by him.
