Subject: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: Peter T. Date: 09 Jun 99 - 09:04 AM "Oh God our Father, Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen. When time is running out, save us from that patience which is akin to cowardice. Give us the courage to be either hot or cold, to stand for something lest we fall for anything. In Jesus' name, Amen. - Peter Marshall (1902-49) |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: John OSh Date: 09 Jun 99 - 01:02 PM With all the turmoil and cunfusion in the world, here is a simple little way to look at life that I learned from my mom. Why Worry! Why worry? In life, you have only two things to worry about; If your healthy or if your sick. If your healthy, why worry. And if your sick, you've got only two things to worry about; If your going to live or if your going to to die. If your going to live, why worry. And if your going to die, you've got only two things to worry about; If your going to heaven or if your going to hell. If your going to heaven, why worry. And if your going to hell, you'll be too damn busy shaking the hands of all your friends who got there before you that you won't have time to worry! Best to all! John OSh

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: Peter T. Date: 09 Jun 99 - 01:35 PM Peter Marshall was the chaplain of the U.S. Senate at one point, but I think he had a more interesting life than that. I think there was a bestselling American book called "The Story of Peter Marshall" that I have never read. I don't know if he was a fanatic, a leftie or a rightie, or anything. I just know this prayer. Yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jun 99 - 02:36 PM Conservative and Christian, but not as we think of those terms today (ie.,Jerry Falwell). Beautiful, humane, and thought provoking writings. That book was on my grandparents nightstand as long as I could remember and my grandfather was more likely to quote Peter Marshall than the bible, though he nightly read both. As a kid, when Hollywood Squares came on, I thought, "Geez, how could this be the same guy?"......and of course it wasn't. catspaw |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: DonMeixner Date: 09 Jun 99 - 11:30 PM The book and Movie A Man Called Peter by Catherine Marshall(Christy?) Peter was a Scotts immigrant who became a Dr. of Divinity and was the chaplain of the U.S. Senate he died of a heart attack in 1949. I read his story in High School (maybe 1968 so my memory may be faulty. He was played by the actor who played the lead in "The Dam Busters", "The Hasty Heart", "Rob Roy MacGregor(Disney) and a bunch of other films. I'll wake up in the middle of the night and remember his name, I'm sure. Don My thought for the day: If at first you don't fricasie, fry, fry a hen. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jun 99 - 11:38 PM There was at least 2 and perhaps 3 other books besides "A Man Called Peter." One was a grouping/ collection of short moralistic stories, a kind of parables for our time thing, which was Pop's favorite. catspaw |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day (June 9) From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 10 Jun 99 - 12:29 AM There was also a play--I was scheduled to be in a production of it in Tulare when I was working as a reporter/photographer at the Visalia Times-Delta, but I came down with pneumonia a couple of days before the opening. Luckily, my part wasn't very large: I played a sailor who was caught in Rev. Marshall's church making out with his girlfriend just before going off to war. Rev. Marshall, of course, chides the elder who discovered us for disturbing us. Kind of reminds me of the old joke about three Frenchmen arguing about the meaning of "savoir-faire. The first one says that a man who walks in on his wife making love to his best friend and leaves quietly exemplifies the quality. The second says no, it's the man who walks in and before leaving says "Excusez-moi." The third says the others are getting close, but a man with true savoir-faire would say "Excusez-moi. Continuez, s'il vous plait." --seed |
