Subject: Irish flute-whistle Kansas City Apr 11 From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 04 Apr 09 - 09:40 AM A not-for-profit org to which I belong is having a gig. If you are near Kansas City, please come. ====== Turlach Boylan Concert! Sponsored by Missouri Valley Folklife Society - April 11, 2009, Saturday at 7:30 PM - Location: KC Strings, 5842 Merriam Dr, Merriam, KS - Prices are $10.00 general admission, students $7.00; Six years and under free - Tickets are only available at the door. "I've always had a soft spot for flute music and when it's being played the way Turlach plays is, I just sit down and listen in awe." -Mich G. Nielsen, Penguin News Turlach Boylan grew up on a farm in County Derry, the oldest of seven children. After studying various instruments including piano and trumpet, he began playing Irish music in earnest on the flute at the age of 16. He studied for a couple of years with County Antrim flute master John Kennedy before moving to Belfast to pursue an engineering degree. Turlach was winner of the All-Ireland Senior Flute Slow Airs competition in 1986 and has reached All-Ireland finals several times. In 1999 he founded Big Plain Records, a record label aimed at promoting Irish Traditional Music in the United States and Canada. In that same year his first solo flute album, "The Tidy Cottage", was released. Join us for a special evening of Irish Traditional Music on flute and tin whistle. We feel fortunate to be able to present Turlach Boylan in concert in the KC area and know you will enjoy his music and humor. |

Subject: RE: Irish flute-whistle Kansas City Apr 11 From: WyoWoman Date: 05 Apr 09 - 01:12 PM Thanks for the information. I won't be able to attend, but I'll pass this along to my Kansas City friends. Leeneia, do you live in Kansas City? We probably have lots of friends and connections in the music community there. All my other band members live there and have played in KC for years. Be in touch if you'd like to connect. Cheers, WyoWoman (from when I lived in Wyoming, pre-easter Kansas) |

Subject: RE: Irish flute-whistle Kansas City Apr 11 From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Apr 09 - 08:13 PM Thanks for the responses. Yes, I hail from Kansas City. I plan to be there, but my brother is very ill, and I might have to be at his side. His wife is debating what's best to do at this point. The venue, Kansas City Strings, is a music store, dark red brick with plate glass windows. It is on the west side of Merriam Drive, and it is the second building north of Johnson Drive. Johnson Drive is the first street north of Shawnee Mission Parkway (Hwy 56.) All of this is 1/2 (I think) mile north of where I-35 crosses 56. there's parking on the street and in the back, but I'm not sure exactly how one gets 'in the back.' The neighborhood is pretty quiet on a Saturday night, and parking doesn't present a challenge. |

Allow several days to get to Kansas City. (You can tell Leeneia isn't a native because she says 'Highway 56' instead of 56 Highway, which is the right way.) |
