Subject: Vienna, Austria From: axman664 Date: 11 May 10 - 01:47 PM I am moving from the US to Vienna, Austria in September and am wondering what the folk scene is like there? I am interested in anything going on, but especially traditional Irish as I have led an Irish band here in the States for the last year now. |

Subject: RE: Vienna, Austria From: beeliner Date: 11 May 10 - 09:16 PM Be prepared to freeze your ass off in the winter! Apart from that it's a fantastic city! If the universe has a center, it's gotta be Wien. Sorry I can't help with the folk scene there. |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: GUEST,Erich Date: 12 May 10 - 04:27 AM The irish-folk scene in Vienna is not what ist used to be in the 80's but there are still some sessions in several pubs. You will find a lot of irish pubs, but the music is not always irish (not even folk). The only irish group visiting Vienna are the Dubliners. In Vienna you will find a lot of blues or (even more) jazz-music. If you are looking for events try the following sites: www.weltenklang.at www.tradivarium.at www.cafeconcerto.at www.euroots.com www.blues.at www.bluesimon.at www.bluesconvention.com Don't expect too much good luck Erich |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: alanabit Date: 12 May 10 - 04:45 AM My knowledge is a bit out of date, as it has been fifteen years since I used to go there regularly. However, there used to be lots of little folk and blues clubs and cafés once you were outside the centre. Most tourists head straight for Kärntner Strße area around the centre, but most of the fun places to go out were around the seventh district (around Volkstheater) and the tenth district. If you make some friends there quickly, you should have a wonderful time. The local dialect might take a little time to master though! |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: Mr Red Date: 12 May 10 - 07:59 AM If you are into dance contact Martin Kiff. He runs a website for EC - mostly gigs in the UK, some France, but I am sure he would know of any dancing in Austria and maybe music generally - he gets Austrian bands to Chippenham (UK). http://webfeet.org links for Europe too. |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: ruairiobroin Date: 12 May 10 - 10:17 AM There are several irish music bands over the border in Hungary and Veszprem is having a festival at the end of the month with Hungarians playing Irish music. Another band Pucks and fairies are based in Pecs but tour quite a bit. Comhaltas Ceoltoiri eireann used to have a branch in Budapest and one of their number used to travel weekly to Wien to teach set Dancing. Will try to find out if he's still doing it and come back to you.. |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: Felipa Date: 08 Aug 26 - 06:27 PM prefer info here - got thrown off FB by Meta. I dont see anything re music at https://www.goldenharp1030.at/ https://www.euroots.com/ doesnt list any current events, though the archive lists an event held in June this year Dance groups seem to be all off on holiday till Sept or Oct, not surprising given the heat. This one looks interesting: https://bulgarischerhythmen.at/en/content Before I wrote on this thread, I looked up a site which gave lists of concerts in Aug, but what they called folk sounded more like pop to my ears. Here is an interesting workshop in November https://vcah.iafor.org/viennese-folk-music-workshop/ (my visit to Vienna is in mid Aug, but some other Mudcatter may be interested) |

Subject: RE: folk scene in Vienna, Austria From: SaulBro Date: 12 Aug 26 - 05:41 PM Try the Tunnel, small hangout in the Florianigasse(8th District),sometimes has folk music or similar in their music room downstaira below the café. https://www.tunnel-vienna-live.at/ If you are blues-oriented, check out Hans Theessink's website. He often plays at the Metropol or Jazzland, sometimes with various other musicians/guitarists and sometimes solo. https://www.theessink.com/en/ Yesrs ago, I used to play at small venues where neighborhood "country music clubs" would meet regularly, often with acoustic music or bluegrass. Things have no doubt changed, so can't cite any specifics, but something to look out for. |
