There is a beautiful Irish song called TA MO CHLEAMHNAS DEANTA or TA MO CHLEAMHNAS A DHEANAMH (My Match Is Made or something like it) which I do not have on paper and can't entirely work out. I usually only do English material, being English, but this one has blown my socks off for some time now. Maireád Ní Mhaonaigh sings it on Altan's album 'Altan', also on the live CD that came with their retrospective compilation. I've bracketed the bits I can't get. I won't attempt the Irish verses, and have left them out below, but I wonder if any Irish speakers familiar with the song can tell me if the Irish and English verses are different, or the same but in different languages?

I never heard this sung in English - ever. I very much doubt if any English "translation" could be sung to the air. A macaronic version appears (I think) in Ó Muirithe's "an t-Amhrán Macarónach", but there is no indication of the air - a huge deficit in an otherwise very worthy piece of scholarship. Conán

The English verses are an apoproximate translation of the Irish verses. The text in O Muirithe is similar to that sung by Altan. See these threads: Tá mo chleamhnas déanta and Ta/ Mo Chleamhnas A Dhe/anamh

Sometime back The Chieftains did an album with Van Morrison. On that album they did this song. Kevin Conniff would sing a verse in Irish, and Morrison would then follow with the verse in English. The translation they used was the one referenced by Áine.

I liked this song so much that eleven (twelve?) years ago when I bought Irish Heartbeat (The Chieftains/Van Morrison Album) I memorized the Gaelic phoenetically. As a side note, this was the album that started my interest in folk music; and it received 5 stars from Rolling Stone.

Van Morrison and the Chieftains do an excellent version of this song--i love it. it's on the album Irish Heartbeat. check it out!
