Subject: Visit to Boston
From: Lady McMoo
Date: 20 Oct 99 - 11:40 AM

Dear Friends,

I will be crossing the pond to Boston, MA from 9 November through to 14 November to attend a short course and, if there is a chance of joining in any Irish sessions, will pack something portable like a mandolin.

Perhaps any 'Catters living in or near Boston could let me know of the days/times/locations of any good sessions?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

mcmoo

mcmoo - I live in Texas now, and can't help ya with finding a session, but I do wish you the best in Boston. It's a great town, and there are lots of things to do and see while you're there. Music and museums, there's a bit of country not too far north, and if you get time, a day trip, driving around to check out Rhode Island would be well worth while - Tiverton, Little Compton, Newport, Jamestown - all worthwhile, and old New England.

I hope you enjoy it!

Hi mcmoo, I'm at work now & I'll respond tonight when I get home. In the meantime let me know about your interests & I'll find out what's around. There are sessions every night, though. Barry

mcmoo!

Barry is the man for the job, he'll give you the local lowdown. However, I don't understand how he can be looking at his computer at work... he's a roofer as I recall! Doesn't look like you'll be in Boston on a Sunday night. I was at a very pleasant session in the Financial District of Boston last Sunday at a place named Mr. Dooley's. It started at 10PM, however, so it's a hell of a way to start the week.

All the best, Dan Milner

Many thanks for responding!

liam: malheuresement I can't stay any longer due to other trips beforehand and child duty when I'm back while Mrs mcmoo is on a trip herself, much as I'd love to! Thanks for the tips though

liam's bro: Thank's! Unfortunately I'll be travelling back to the surreal kingdom (Belgium) on the Sunday!

Barry: Many thanks. I'll look forward to your message. I like folk and blues music as well as Irish, browsing (and dreaming) in music shops, flea markets, good pubs...you get the drift! Many thanks.

mcmoo

Hi again mcmoo. Try this site for local & beyound local folk music stuff.
http://www.music-for-robin.org/nov1.htm
Also go here to the Boston Globe's calendar section, there very supportive of folk musci in the area & update this as time get closer.
http://www.boston.com/goingout/activities/folkconcerts.shtml
Here are some bars that have sessions;
Burren in Somerville (nightly)
Paddy Burke's near North Station (Wed.-singer's session)
Mr.Dooley's - Downtown Boston
Druid in Cambridge (Fri.?) (call 617-497-0965)
Matt Murphy"s in Brookline on Harvard Av. (Thrus.?)(tel # ?)
Brendan Behan in Jamaica Plain (time?)(617-522-5386)
Press Room in Portsmouth NH about an hour north of Boston, it's a mix of Irish & bluegrass with a strong focus on lots of real good singing& that leans a good bit towards shanties.
When calling make it clear that you're looking for info on a Trad session, otherwise you'll get anything for an open mike to stand up comedy act to get you in the door
I stayed to the times you'll be here. If you'd like contact me before you get here & maybe we can get together for some music, though I don't get the chance to get out to often.
Have a great visit in our musical city. Barry

I forgot to say that all the pubs with music are welcoming & a couple of the music shops worth cheching out are the Music Empourim (sp?) on Mass. Ave. in Arlington & Sandy's on Mass. Ave. in Central Sq. Cambridge & the Button Box in Amhearst if you're a squeezer. As for flea markets there's a load of them but none that I can recall as worth a special trip. If you have any other interests or questions just ask. Barry

Memories of Boston

Landed...late...backpack and a phone....

Twelve hotels called... only one alone

Walked forever, all the wrong way

Cabman said, "Tenderloin"... are ya sure ya gonna stay?"

Wow! 23 years old, fresh out of summer in the deepest Maine woods.... next day I checked into a "youth hostel."

If your bookin's are St. Charles Hotel (not Monopoly) WHAT OUT!!!
