I recently purchased a book from a series called The Australian Music Books. I have not found a date of publication but I would guess at about 1920. The book contains many jigs, reels, hornpipes, country dances etc that are popular today. It also contains two Sand Jigs. I have not heard this expression before – can anyone explain it to me.

The two tunes are called My Fancy and Who's Dat Knocking. Both are in 4/4 time. I haven't played either of them yet (I only bought the book yesterday) but they look like reels.

Phil

The term comes from the practise of sprinkling sand on the stage before jigging....more click

See the works of Wilson, Kepple and Betty - famous for only ever doing the 'Sand Dance', where a soft shoe shuffle is executed on a stage sprinkled with sand to get the nice sound. I can do it, but only in the garden before I sweep the path. It doesn't sound right with bare feet on the kitchen vinyl floor.....!

You need army boots, Liz - and I'd like to see you in your little short shift and a tea-towel on your head!

I've danced it live on stage, but not for a few years. I just hope nobody finds the video!

What was your group called, Steve? "Aynuck, Ayli and Marlene"?

I might have known your ears would prick up at the ention of something as ancient as WK&B! A propos nothing in partic, you're the first person who's called me 'bab' since they retired! I bet you knew Nicholas Parsons was the voice of Tex Tucker in 'Four Feather Falls'? (Is that ryhming slang?)

Yes, Steve, It's only me ears that prick up these days, but I can rememeber the last tram through Nechells and when Aston Villa had a football team, when Spaghetti junction was only a bowl of penne...(life is just a bowl of penne..."). But I still can't remember songs I thought I knew!

Haven't got any army boots any more, thanks to the tag line in the Sheik of Araby - with me boots off, kickin' up the dust....

At night into your tent I'll creep,
And fiddle with you while you sleep,
And then, I will molest your sheep,
I am the creep of Araby!

Dah dump!

Any ''Catters in Nottingham UK might be interested in an illustrated lecture by Luke McKernan, Head of Information at the British Universities Film & Video Council, on the Wilson, Keppel and Betty Story at the Broadway Nottingham on 13th June 2000. Details from christine.james@bfi.org.uk
