Does anyone know if there's any way to record music from an audio tape onto the computer? Do I use a line-in, and if so, how? Also is there a FREE program out there that can record MP3s from tapes, or at least record WAVs that can be converted to MP3s? Thanks!

I run from the headphone sockets from my hi-fi (I find the one from the cassette player best for that the purpose you have aked about but I also use the socket on my amp - can do radio and lps as well from the amp) to the line in on my sound card.

I don't know about recording as mp3 but record as .wav (and then struggle to convert). Sound recorder that comes with Windows is quite capable of recording as .wav files.

Jon--I tried that--I can hear everything fine--but Windows Sound Recorder just records silence.

Mbo, 2 thoughts:

1: What are you hearing, is it coming from the tape/ amp or via the soundcard.

2: Check your mixer settings accessories/ volume is the standard windows program for that. Mixers do vary and I am no expert but perhaps you have a line in setting turned off or low.

oddly enough, sometimes even though your sound card has a line-in and a microphone jack, you have to put the audio in into microphone in.....

but many sound cards come with the line-in defaulted to muted....

We have had the same problem. The only way we could get it to work was to paly the stereo really loud and use the mike from the cumputer held up to the speaker. obviously that isn't a good solution, so any help would be appreciated. We have a CD, but several songs we would like to put in mp3 format that we only have on tape. Thanks, Kristi

Thanks a lot, guys! I got it to work! I selected the line-in option on playback and recording, and turned it all the way up. It's records like a charm! Also maybe Hearme will sound better now, too! Watch out Max, I'm gonna be on Mudcat Radio REAL soon!

Mbo, I do it all the time.....

tape player to line in on the sound card.....

You probably have a program that came with your sound card, or there is probably lots available on the internet that will record .wav files. Mine has a choice of inputs ( I use Yamaha Ystation32) so make sure you choose the right input... Line.... (i also have a choice of CD, Mic) the other place to check is under your volume control (dbl click on the speaker, options, properties, choose recording, make sure the line is check on both the place where is says 'show the following volume controls', then open that and select 'line'. You can adjust the volume record level from there as well....

To transfer .wav to .mp3, i use Xing Audio Catalyst.... you can create mp3's from a CD or from any audio file (.wav, .ra etc....) Like I say, i use it a fair bit....

I have used audiotools (this is the name) and find it very good and constantly being improved. Version 3 is about to come out. The author is very helpful and there is a good bulletin board. The web address is
