Subject: Floppy floppy drive From: Ian@whitby Date: 20 Nov 01 - 12:08 PM Any ideas on this parody of that tedious old standard (And b.t.w., does anybody ever sing that other than Peter Piers...?)? Thanks cats, Ian |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Floppy floppy drive From: Snuffy Date: 20 Nov 01 - 07:25 PM I sang it at Bedworth FF last year (so it's nearly a year). I got so completely inside the song, that I scared myself. I'm afraid to sing it again in case it happens again (or in case it doesn't happen again!) WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Floppy floppy drive From: Joe Offer Date: 20 Nov 01 - 08:31 PM Well, Snuffy, this song has been requested in three threads, and nobody has ever posted the lyrics. I completed 2/3 of the 12 years of seminary training required to become a Catholic priest, so I guess I can give you partial absolution for posting an obnoxious song.... Is 2/3 absolution good enough? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Floppy floppy drive From: Snuffy Date: 20 Nov 01 - 08:45 PM Joe, I was talking about "that tedious old standard" The Foggy Foggy Dew, as sung by Peter Pears, Burl Ives, etc, of which there are already at least 2 versions in the DT, not the Floppy Floppy Disk. Sorry to raise your hopes. Does anyone else ever sing it nowadays? WassaiL! V |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Floppy floppy drive From: GUEST,Elizabeth Date: 21 Nov 01 - 02:53 PM Hmmm... I think I have a recording of a version sung by Mattie Joe Shéamais Ó Fatharta at the Willie Clancy Summer School two years ago. I'd be happy to send it your way and you could transcribe from that if you like. Elizabeth Navan ::: www.navan.org |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Floppy floppy drive From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Nov 01 - 06:08 PM I don't much like the way Peter Pears sang it, and there are versions of the song itself that I much prefer. But I reckon it is a good song, with a number of interesting variants.
But "A tedious old standard" that "nobody sings" - there seems a bit of a contradiction there.
I've heard some powerful renderings of the song. I wasn't at Bedworth (and I won't be there this weekend either), so I didn't hear Snuffy's - but I know what he means.
I've always believed that when you find yourself desribing something or somebody as "boring" or "tedious" it is advisable to have a good look at yourself, to be sure you are applying the word to the appropriate person or thing. |
