Well...up and running, really.**BG**

As it is the first of the month, I'd just though this could serve as a reminder to send in your pledges; put something in the suddenly sparse auction; or, whatever else you might be able to do to help support the Mudcat, buy a CD, bid in the auction, etc.

As a hint to Mudcatters in the UK and Europe: on television, over here, there is a company which is selling a set of coins, one from each country, for US19.95, as supposedly those coins will not longer be available once the Euro comes out.

I, for one, would gladly bid on a similar collection offered in the Mudcat auction, were one or more of you to feel so inclined and if practical. How about some of the Irish pennies (is it?) which have a harp on them? And, some of the Welsh coins being discussed in the Leeks VS Dafodills thread, as well as all the others? Several sets might be offered, eh?

Thanks a bunch!

kat

"some of the Welsh coins being discussed in the Leeks VS Dafodills thread,"

The UK is sticking with good old pounds sterling. which therefore remain eaisly attainable, but otherwise the Idear's Great :)

prehaps you could include in the set one of the new euro cents, with the reverce aplicable to the country in question.

will not longer be available once the Euro comes out.

Some annotations:

Euro coins and notes are in use since the start of this year.

All former national currencies are not valid any longer since today (some lost their validity a bit earlier).

Welsh (as well as English, Scottish and Northern Irish) coins are not influenced by the Euro - as Great Britain does not take part in the Euro.

About the harp: the Irish Euro coins still have the harp on the backside (all coins have one common side and one national side).

I spent all my German Mark coins during the first week of the Euro - so I can't contribute any.

Thanks, to both of you!

I do have a small tin of coins from the early sixties which my brother brought back with him, from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, France, and Great Britain. I've always found them fascinating.

I still like the "idear," too and the eruo idea is neat, too.

Mudguard, how do you feel about them adopting the euro and no longer having marks?

Split feelings.

Sure it makes it easier to travel around Europe. Last year I did a small trip - starting at the German MudGathering in Münster going thru the Netherlands and Belgium to France. I needed 4 kinds of money, loosing heavily at each currency exchange...

On the other hand, the German Mark was the most stable currency within the 12 Euro countries... But since the exchange rates got fixed 3 years ago, I could not find a bigger inflation than before. Sure some shops tried to make a win by not calculating the prices in the Euro by the exact rate - but in general prices have not risen more than usual (nothing gets cheaper...).

For me, the positive aspects are more important - prices are easier to compare across borders, no losses when traveling... (very nice when you live near a border like I do - you do not have to think about money exchange when you go for a day skiing in Austria).

Thanks for the further information, I do find it very interesting.

I've spoken to a couple of other Mudcatters who also think the coin thing would be a neat thing to have in the auction, euros and/or the older coins, so....how about it some of you "cross-ponders?"

And for that matter, how about some coins from Oz and New Zealand? That'd be a neat little package, too.

Thanks,

kat

I'd say the harp is on the front side of the euro.

So trying to raise money for the Mudcat is pathetic? What a remarkably perspicacious remark...Well, a very revealing one anyway.

Kevin, it is "official talk": the common side of the Euro coins is called the front, the national side is called the back.

So say the European Union as well as the European Central Bank.

Wait until you see what I put in the auction next! Seriously, I have more than two beer cases worth of books (that's about four cubic feet), and a bunch of recordings ranging from the expected to the truly bizarre. I'm just putting them on two items at a time so that folks don't get inventory overload. And I'm keeping the bidding time to a week so thatthis project doesn't last the rest of my life.*g*
