Subject: The White Rose (Cornish trad.) From: Greyeyes Date: 19 Jun 02 - 10:00 AM Does anyone have any information about the traditional Cornish song "The White Rose"? I've exhausted all my usual sources and apart from the fact that it's Cornish and traditional I can't find anything about it. I have traced a couple of CDs it has been recorded on but I'm really looking for info on the song rather than recordings. How old? Any provenance etc. |

Subject: RE: The White Rose (Cornish trad.) From: Kernow John Date: 19 Jun 02 - 04:23 PM I looked in Mike O'Connors book and Ian Marshall's. The song is in both but niether gives a clue to it's origin. Mike credits Mervyn Vincent for the version in his book and Ian Marshall says it sounds like a composed Victorian Ballad. I'll keep looking. John |

Subject: RE: The White Rose (Cornish trad.) From: GUEST,Mark Date: 27 Jun 19 - 02:16 AM From what I have been told living and being born in Cornwall it's a sing about the Cornish Bal maids, they were the young girls that worked in the Cornish mines, started work around the age of 10 and having enjoyed the Cornish sunshine until then their cheeks warm and red, after years of working in the arsenic rich air they became pale and sick, that's the story I was always told anyway |
