Subject: Music venues, Scotland From: GUEST,John, from Minnesota Date: 17 Aug 03 - 01:39 PM My wife and I will be visiting Scotland, for the first time, Aug. 27 through Sept 11. I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any music events, music pubs, etc. that may be happening during that time, or are worth a visit. We are fairly flexible, but plan to visit Glascow early in trip; Edinburgh late in the trip and areas North and West [Stirling, Inverness, Skye, Glencoe, ??? during the interim. Thanks for any help. |

Subject: RE: Music venues, Scotland From: GUEST Date: 17 Aug 03 - 03:02 PM In Dunkeld (north of Edinburgh) visit the Taybank Hotel and Pub. Formerly owned by Dougie McLean, it is now under new ownership. When I visited last summer the pub had a piano, guitar and fiddle in one corner. I spent an pleasant there evening playing fiddle. Many sessions and concerts, but don't know how it's changed under the new management. Dunkeld is a beautiful little town. In Edinburgh, stop by On The Mound, a coffee and tea cafe off the Royal Mile on N. Bank St. Also started by Dougie MacLean, "it aims to bring music, coffee and interesting snacks together in a relaxed and comfortable setting in the historic 'old town' of Edinburgh. We extend a special welcome to musicians of all styles to come, meet and play in our acoustic music cafe', where there is a lovely piano and a violin for visiting players." I also spent some time there playing their house fiddle (a remarkably nice instrument, by the way). For some pictures of my Scotland trip last summer click HERE. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Music venues, Scotland From: GUEST,John, from Minnesota Date: 17 Aug 03 - 04:16 PM Thanks everyone you have not only given me some good tips, but also access to some links. At this rate, the music may be a theme for our trip, rather than just an extra pleasant, diversion. |

Subject: RE: Music venues, Scotland From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Aug 03 - 08:05 AM kendall, by Perth Folk Club, I assume you mean Glenfarg Folk Club ? Another venue which is shortly going to become the musical hub of central Perthshire is the Riverside Inn at Grandtully, 5 miles off the A9 on the road to Aberfeldy. It is in the process of being bought this week, the new owner and his wife are both fine traditional Scottish musicians, and eventually there will probably be live traditional music there every night.
