Subject: Collected Mudcat Letters Of...
From: Mooh

I have no idea if this has been discussed before and haven't a clue how to start looking, so forgive me please if I'm trodding on old ground.

There have been a few Mudcat member obituaries which have had us looking up old posts and opinions from the dear departed. Should we, could we, produce an online consolidated collection of letters by which to remember these friends? Is it legal or appropriate? (Or has it already been done and I'm as usual a little late for the wake?) Wading through the filters and searches for Bruce was very enlightening and I wonder if his writings could be arranged as an online book.

Opinions? Ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks and Peace. Mooh.

That's a great idea, Mooh. I've been working on collecting Art (Thieme's, that is) writings on here for a couple of years, as I come across them and with his permission. I thought putting them in a small book might be a way to help him raise some funds. I have to say, though, I haven't had much time for doing so of late and haven't had much input from others who came across them when I asked.

One consideration, though, some of us are writers and as such we may mine this place for our own stuff to see what we might work up for regular publication, so we'd have to be sure of permission etc.:-) (I know it's obvious.:-)

If you click on the name at the top of a post you get a complete collection of links to all the posts they have made in any name when they have been logged in as members.

When people post as GUESTS with a name, clucking in that just gives all the posts they have made in that name. (When they don't use a name of course you just get a complete collection of all the nameless GUEST posts by all the nameless GUEST posters.)

This isn't the same as an organised collection of course, which would be a much more complicated thing to produce, and could be pretty interesting.

Someday there'll probably be PhD students doing research on the MUDCAT, I reckon. When we're all dead.

Subject: Posts from Bruce Olson
From: Joe Offer
Date: 05 Nov 03 - 03:33 PM

As McGrath says, posts of registered members are easy to find - just click on their name in any message they've posted. Some of Bruce Olson's non-anonymous posts will come up if you Click here and Click here, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to make a link to Bruce's early non-anonymous posts. Since many of Bruce's posts were anonymous, it might be a little harder - but you can find a lot by using supersearch to find phrases he used frequently. He made frequent mention of his "Scarce Songs" file at his website - (click here to search). also look for the phrase "file on my website" (click). or the URL for his Website, www.erols.com/olsonw.

Art Thieme is here (click)
While we're at it, let's embarrass Jerry Rasmussen and Sandy Paton

There are many others who have said significant things. Maybe, though, they posted things in a particular context, and they'd like their comments left in that context of the dynamics of a group discussion. I have to say, though, that it seems that Art Thieme's stories should be indexed somehow.

Still, in general I think it's not a good idea to go too deep into a "personality cult," and single out the posts of certain individuals because they're well-known, or because they've died and left us. These people gave us the gift of joining in our discussion, and maybe they'd prefer that their gifts be left within the context in which they were given. I'm sure Jerry and Sandy and Art wouldn't be taken aback by my posting links to their posts, but I purposely avoided posting links to certain others.

Sure it is easy now to find all postings by one person, which is super, but it still takes time to go through each and every one to find the gems and tidbits. That's why I'd asked for help in spotting Fine Art.**bg**

Posts here do tend to be part of ongoing discussions; as a result, anything said is not to be considered definitive as an expression of opinion or of fact, but provisional until additional information becomes available. These are not academic papers, and as Joe points out, should probably be left in the context in which they originally occurred. To remove them from their context would be to risk misrepresenting their authors and the subject being dealt with.

Hollowfox, **bg**

I agree with Joe and Malcolm Douglas, regarding Bruce's postings and those like them.

In the case of Art, his postings are more along the lines of stories about other performers or his own experiences, as well as groan-producing, priceless puns. They stand alone quite well, imo.

Okay then, I will do a personal editing of things relevent to me as written by (place name here) without loosing context or creating a "personality cult". It's obvious how it's done, I apparently erroniously suspected some might want to share in this. Oh well...

Peace, Mooh.

Oops, that sounded more abrupt than I intended. Please read the previous post with a kinder, gentler tone. Thanks.

Peace, Mooh.

Well, as long as we're trying out kinder & gentler....**bg**... I didn't mean that Art was only about puns and stories. Sorry if it sounded that way.:-) Of course, his postings about the songs and their history are priceless, too, imo.
