Does anyone know the words to a World War 2 song entitled "Who's Taking You Home Tonight?" If anyone could supply these I would be very grateful.

I did a Google search and found references to recordings by Vera Lynn, but I couldn't find any lyrics. Maybe I'm just having bad luck and somone else will do better,

Maybe??? Tom Jones tho...

There's a place you go after dark
Where you sell your haunted heart
In the shadows you look for the friend
Who'll take you where the sidewalks ends

And it's a sad affair
You reach out but no one's there

Tell me who's gonna take you home tonight
Take your hand and hold you tight
Who'll be the one to make it right
And promise you paradise
Tell me who's gonna take you home tonight
Turn the darkness into light
And wipe away the tears you cry
Just another stranger
Will be taking you home tonight

You couldn't see that love was the price
What happened to the light in your eyes
Broken dreams fall at your feet
You stand alone on a dead end street

So who's gonna hear you prayer
Look around there's no one there
He'll tell you dreams come true
And take you to some rented room
But when the blinds are drawn
Another angel will fall

I guess it's in your blood
One love just ain't enough

Tell me who's gonna take you home tonight
Take your hand and hold you tight
Who'll be the one to make it right
And promise you paradise
Tell me who's gonna take you home tonight
Turn the darkness into light
And wipe away the tears you cry
Just another stranger
Will be taking you home tonight

No, NOT Tom Jones, (perish the thought)

I don't think they used words like "Gonna" in England in 1940.

I've already done exhaustive search on the net for the lyrics and I can't find them, which is why I was hoping someone on here would be able to help

Well, you're right that finding the lyrics on the web is a bear. I can only suggest you buy one of the many records and CDs that have been issued of Vera Lynne singing this song. Here is on such CD from the UK.

Regards,

Amos

Oh dear! This is going round in my head now for the rest of the evening, but I can only remember snatches. That may jog someone else's memory.

Who's taking you home tonight after the dance is through?
Who's hoping to hold you tight (whispering 'I love you'?)
Who's the lucky guy who's going your way
To kiss you goodnight at your doorway?
Who's taking you home tonight -------

Yes, Willa, that's the one! It's ok we found it, but I had to go all the way from South Wales to a friend in Toronto to find it!!

There are several recordings available. I was able to piece together a few more lyrics from sound samples:

WHO'S TAKING YOU HOME TONIGHT?
Words, Tommy Connor. Music, Manning Sherwin. 1939.

They met at a dance...
...at these words from the boy of her dreams:

Who's taking you home tonight after the dance is through?
Who's going to hold you tight and whisper "I love you, I do"?
Who's the lucky boy that's going your way
To kiss you goodnight at your doorway?
Who's taking you home tonight? Darling, it's plain to see,
I'm pleading, please let it be me....

[As sung by Vera Lynn. There are also recordings by Maurice Winnick and His Orchestra with vocalist Al Bowlly, Oscar Rabin, and Sydney Lipton. (The latter 2 may be instrumentals.)]

Sorry I took so long to respond. I would have noticed this thread sooner if it had had the prefix "Lyr Req:".
