I loved Floyd Cramer's style of playing piano.

Love "On The Rebound", "Last Date" and his work with Elvis.
Apparently one jazz pianist (sorry, forgotten his name) was influenced by his style.

I have to confess that I too am puzzled, but in no way upset, about Shambles recent penchant for posting up the birthdays of deceased artists.

In this case however I am am rather glad that he has done so , since it enables me to share a link to a song which has always held a special place in my heart. This is not the original version, but it is so close that you couldn't really spot the difference on a casual listening.

I don't think you can hear the original on the internet without shelling out bucks and registering ... One of the most evocative instrumentals ever recorded, imo.

Floyd Cramer's "Last Date"

Thanks for the link MM.

This was a favorite instrumental of mine when it came out in 1960.

The lyrics are excellent and painfully expressive.

I agree, Murray. That is a special tune. I"m glad that I've never heard lyrics put to it.

In recent years I have heard it done by a man on 5-string banjo, of all things. This friend resonates to what he calls the golden age of banjo, the decade up to 1910 or so. He plays very lyrically, way up the neck with lots of tremolo and double stops. He does Last Date beautifully.

Any chance of shooting a video of your friend playing that and putting it up on YouTube, Ebbie ? Just the sort of thing that deserves a wider audience.

Hey, Murray, good idea. My friend has retired to Knoxville now but he does go online so I can ask him if he knows a way to do that. Andy is pretty good - he's been an instructor at Winfield, Kansas - and he does a lot of tunes like Sweet Georgia Brown, Five Foot Two and My Blue Heaven so he's fun to listen to.

I'll check with him.

"Last Date" is a beautiful cut. Cramer's touch on the keyboard was nothing short of masterful. One of the great 'songs' from that era.
