On TV this morning, someone named Jo O'Meara said that she couldn't go home because of 'deaf frets'. This is a new one on me, but could explain a lot about my playing. What are the symptoms? Is there a cure?

Maybe it's the other way around it's your playing that's causing the "deaf frets".

;-)

If it's the frets which are deaf this is a job for a luthier*, I'm afraid. With any luck a tweak of the truss rod can help but you may need a full re-fret and set up. The same symptoms can occur if your fingering's inaccurate muffling (or more correctly "muthling") the strings.

I have to say it sounds pretty bad if she's not allowed home because of it.

*Be very careful not to take it to a loofah.

Perhaps she was referring to Aurally-challenged posh rodents, like what the Queen has in the sewers of Windsor Castle??

Try this. Turn the TV off and use the time saved to play the instrument.

Ah, I think we're getting there, thanks to Guest leeneia. I thought if I had a resonator, the 'learning to play' bit was optional, like tuning. Now I can be a real 'catter!

This problem is usually fixed by some o' da boys making an offer you can't refuse

Sorry Tootler, my musical technique involves making refuse you can't offer.
