I am auditioning soon to be a player at Texas Rennaisance Festival and I need an acapella song of about 2 minutes. Does anyone have any good ideas? I'm a soprano so no low notes! :-)

Do you know "Nonesuch"?

And she shall bring the birds in spring and dance among the flowers...

Do you want a slow, sad song or an upbeat song? What era is this RenFest focused on? Do you want something Elizabethan, or medieval, or? What's your vocal range?

There's a lovely Dyer-Bennett tune that starts:
Do you happen to know of a fair maid in need,
Of a sweetheart -- here's one, who is anxious to plead
It's a shame that a handsome young fellow like me
Should be left while the nightingal sings in the tree!

which would win any heart in a pure lilting soprano!

A

Let us know how it goes, AggieBethie. I don't know the words to Nonesuch but do know the tune and think it would suit your voice very nicely, so it may be worth seeking it out. Good luck! Margaret

Go No More A Rushing, or The Willow Song would be lovely ones to do. Both in the DT.

In the Digitrad window, search for "A small bird or two". (Two Maidens Went Milking One Day) It's light, easy to learn, sounds baroque/old, might be a good match for your soprano range.

Amos:

I sing the Nightingale song, but I've never heard Richard Dyer-Bennett sing it, or heard of him singing it. Which record? Many of his records are still available through Smithsonian/Folkways.

The only recorded version I've run across was Burl Ives.

Dave Oesterreich
