About a year ago, I came across the lyrics to "20 naked Pentecostals in a Pontiac". Since then I have searched in vain for the music. Can anyone help me locate the sheet music? Dulcimer tab would be great 'cause that's what I play. Thanks

Sorcha - this is maybe the third time I have posted to this forum. Each time has been a request for music (twice) or lyrics (once). EACH time you have come forth quickly with an answer. You are a very nice lady and I appreciate your quick and accurate help. Thank you

Pardonne, but I think Masato is ahead of me. Perhaps not on quantity, but he sure finds a lot of stuff I can't find. (Thanks, though)

Couldn't find a tab or sheet music, but if you can work up something from listening to the song, it's available on this CD: http://cartalk.cars.com/cartunes.html

That was written by my good friend Chris Stuart, who now resides in San Diego. He used to be in a band called Cornerstone in N.Y. and before that we played together in St. Augustine. It was based on a true story from one of the wire services. Besides being a very funny fellow, Chris has written some terrific songs in other veins. Claire Lynch recorded one or two gospel songs. Wish he'd come back to Florida.

Lyrics modified from here after listening here.

Twenty Naked Pentecostals in a Pontiac

I was thumbing my way down to Baton Rouge, standing on the side of the road
When a car pulled over and a voice cried out, "We'll take you where you want to go"
I jumped inside, but to my surprise, they were naked as a poor man's toes
It was a tight situation when the whole congregation said the devil was in my clothes

CHORUS
Twenty naked Pentecostals in a Pontiac
Brothers and sisters shouting in the back
Elders in the front, choir in the trunk
Twenty naked Pentecostals in a Pontiac

The sermon that morning was on Adam and Eve and the ways of the dreadful snake
Everybody was clapping when the preacher pointed at me, my body began to shake
I threw off my shirt, and my shoes and my socks, my jeans and my BVDs.
We were all in the nude, shouting "Hallelu!" and singing "Somebody Touched Me."

CHORUS

We had the cruise control set to fifty-five when a Smokey got on our tail
He pulled up beside, his eyes got wide, and the siren began to wail
We ran off the road toward the tree of life, Lord, the future was looking bleak
We hung on and prayed, everybody was saved, 'cause we all knew how to turn the other cheek

CHORUS (x2)

I've been singing this to great hilarity since I learned it about ten years ago. I've done a bit of research and here are news reports about the incident.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1993/08/20/20-naked-people-emerge-after-auto-strikes-tree/b36f7f9f-ab19-4c22-b975-79a402c9b438/

There used to be two reports from the AP, the second one a report of the preacher's trial a few days after the wreck. However, when I searched for them just now, they no longer appear at the address I found long ago.

FYI: The Washington Post article requires a subscription. You can get a one day subscription for a dollar, or a one year subscription for $0.50 a month.
