In the years I have been attending singing weekends, fleadhs, sessions etc.. I have recorded on my trusty little tape recorder dozens of satirical songs. Brian O'Rourke, Fintan Vallely, Sean Moane and others but beeing a 'cheep git' I didn't use good quality tapes and now some of the recordings are lost, broken tapes, snagging in machines etc. Does anyone know if an official recording has ever been made of an accompilation of these singers (and others) songs such as 'Willie McBride', 'Willie McCray' etc. If not it seems a shame that all that hard work and wicked humour be lost.

slan eoin.

Fintan Vallely and Tim Lyons have an great album of satirical songs, including the Willie McBride parody. Check out http://www.scithereedee.com.

I had the tape of this album but sadly someone took a shine to it and claimed it for their own. I must buy it again but does anyone know of any others? There must be more somewhere or even a book of satirical songs. Thanks Fibula.

Eoin, I dont know if anyone did a compilation, but most of Brian O'Rourkes songs are on a tape which he has for sale. There is a Club formed for the promotion of comic songs. It is Club Chantal, made up of those who can recite Brian's song,"Chantal du Champignon". The next meeting will be in Macroom in spring 2003. Patmike

eoin - it's a bit over the top for some people, but one of my favourites is the Hairy Bowsie's "Publocked" album, which is (for those unfamiliar with it) a fantastic parody of republican ballad bands - a bit like the a hardcore version of the Wolfe Tones on speed. It's not for the easily offended, but it's bloody hilarious.

And if you're looking for quality satire, may I recommend a read of our own Campsite at Drumcree threads (all 5 of them - and still more peripheral ones).

And if you're looking for more quality satire, may I recommend the 'Portadown News' [ More results from www.portadownnews.com ]

I cant believe it, a site with the wonderful Chantal du champignon.
I have been living in Colrado since 94 and this ballad has eluded me for all this time. Before i left home a friend handed me a tape and said take a listen. I had never heard anything quiet like it and of course ambled of to Amerikay without a copy. Trips home and questions asked as to how to get a copy of a cd or tape proved fruitless, so i beg if anybody could help me out i would be indebted. Indeed anything by Brian O'Rourke would be deadly, thank you, Sean Doran

Two words from the left side of the pond:
Tom Lehrer.

In terms of quality, the wonderful Tom Lehrer is the equal of anyone. He had a real job though (as a university mathematics teacher) which kept down the productivity a bit. Sadly, he only made three albums. From your side of the pond I think that Shel Silverstein, whose name also crops up here from time to time, was another jewel in your crown - (if I may say that about a proud republic!)He produced both quality and quantity.

This CD is full of hilarious contemporary Irish satirical ballads:
"Sex, Sca & Sedition. The New Ballads. Subaltern elements in contemporary Irish Ballads". Subaltern elements? that exotic
term deserves a satire in itself. The CD has various singer/songwriters and was produced by Jimmy Crowley.
Free State Records P.O. Box 145, Cork Ireland.
