I heard about a nine-volume collection of Klezmer music (well-known to Klez folk) which is said to be so rare that only volumes 1 and 9 can now be found in any form.... it was said that 2-8 have not been seen in anyone's living memory. I kinda think that if anyone has these, it would be a Mudcatter.

Anyone?

No, I do not know the name of the collection.

~Susan

Susan, these are the Kammen Folios. I don't know for sure but I think that only Vols. 1&9 contained Klezmer tunes, the others were of popular tunes of the day. I'll try to contact Tara Pub. and ask Velvel Pasternak. He will know if anyone will. It may take a while since I'm in Japan and I'll have to try and find an E-mail address for him. I have a phnoe number but it's in the states.

Thanks, Troll. There are some good folks wondering about this, who are doing and teaching Klez as part of an eclectic mix, and it would be good to know the answer.

Susan,

Have your friends access jewishmusic.com
That's Tara Publications and they are the best single source that I know of. They have a variety of music books, cds and books about klezmer music. The best of these is by Henry Sapoznik. I,ve found an E-mail address and will write tonight.

Thanks. I'll pass your and Troll's links along in case they do not know about them. Someone else was looking for Ladino songs last week too, and now I can refer them here, as well.

Here is a link to some downloadable Klezmer stuff, including a couple selections from Kammens: The Cinncinati Klezmer Project

Volume 2, at least, is still in print:
Most Popular Kammen Folio
Of Favorite Jewish Songs, Vol 2
Pub.: Ashley Publications
Code: AS10212
Subject: Songs
Dimensions: 9 x 12 in.
List: 12.95

The Kammen folios featured all the most popular ethnic dance melodies of the day(originally published in the 1920's) and the tunes were labelled with simply the by the type of dance and a number, such as Freilach #11--The volumes in the collection were not all Jewish music, and many of the collections included dances from a number of ethnic groups, often including Polish, Italian, Jewish, Russian, and Greek. For Greek, the folio that I had said that you simply play the Jewish tunes. There was also a lot of repetition from one folio to another--

The folios were very widely used, and somewhere, I have a vinyl album of the orchestra from the King David Hotel in the Catskills with the identified simply by dance name and number--not a very exciting album, but I suppose you have to expect that when the music is just played by number--

Susan, Steve Levin of Tara Pub. Said that as far as he knows the folios 2 through 8 simply didn't have enough jewish or klezmer tunes to warrant the expense of re-printing them.
Thanks to M.Ted for his info. I was not aware of the existance of #2.

No. 5 was "An Up to Date Album of Jewish Chusidish and Palestinian Dances--Frailachs, Bulgars and Chusidils" There was also a parallel series, "Kammen Folio of Famous Jewish Songs" that had a least 4 volumes, and are for singing, so they are much more fun--
