Subject: Legendary 9-volume Klezmer Set? From: wysiwyg Date: 29 Sep 02 - 11:44 PM I heard about a nine-volume collection of Klezmer music (well-known to Klez folk) which is said to be so rare that only volumes 1 and 9 can now be found in any form.... it was said that 2-8 have not been seen in anyone's living memory. I kinda think that if anyone has these, it would be a Mudcatter. Anyone? No, I do not know the name of the collection. ~Susan |

I don't know for sure but I think that only Vols. 1&9 contained Klezmer tunes, the others were of popular tunes of the day. I'll try to contact Tara Pub. and ask Velvel Pasternak. Volume 2, at least, is still in print: The Kammen folios featured all the most popular ethnic dance melodies of the day(originally published in the 1920's) and the tunes were labelled with simply the by the type of dance and a number, such as Freilach #11--The volumes in the collection were not all Jewish music, and many of the collections included dances from a number of ethnic groups, often including Polish, Italian, Jewish, Russian, and Greek. For Greek, the folio that I had said that you simply play the Jewish tunes. There was also a lot of repetition from one folio to another-- The folios were very widely used, and somewhere, I have a vinyl album of the orchestra from the King David Hotel in the Catskills with the identified simply by dance name and number--not a very exciting album, but I suppose you have to expect that when the music is just played by number--

Said that as far as he knows the folios 2 through 8 simply didn't have enough jewish or klezmer tunes to warrant the expense of re-printing them. Thanks to M.Ted for his info. From: M.Ted Date: 02 Oct 02 - 03:29 PM No. 5 was "An Up to Date Album of Jewish Chusidish and Palestinian Dances--Frailachs, Bulgars and Chusidils" There was also a parallel series, "Kammen Folio of Famous Jewish Songs" that had a least 4 volumes, and are for singing, so they are much more fun-- |
