Subject: Tune Req: * Young Redin *
From: Thomas the Rhymer
Date: 08 Dec 02 - 01:44 AM

Hello. As I was intrigued by the 'Young Hunting' thread, 'Young Redin' caught my eye, and has subsequently jilted my piqued curiosity. So, as I casually browsed with fretted brow, I found no melody in my small but ardent search. Having realised that the die is cast, and that I need to do this song, I am now wondering if anyone has heard of a melody for 'Young Redin'. I am awaiting your reply with great anticipation, and longing... ttr

That's a file format that a lot of people probably can't use. Closer to home, there's a midi at Mudcat Midis, as it happens, which is the right one for the DT text:

Young Redin

MMario has added a lot of material there recently. If you're looking for a tune missing from a DT file, always look there first. There's a link to the midi from the DT file, actually; perhaps you didn't notice it.

Well, sir, the playlist with Young Redin on, performed by treewind and Mary H., can be found over here, and the song is beautifully done.

See, if you order your whole set, then you'd be able to go right to it!!

Thanks Amos, you beat me to it!

Mary couldn't find a good tune for it and adapted this one from another song in an Appalachian ballad collection. Her version of the words is also pieced together from several sources and condensed to make the story succinct enough but without losing the magic and drama.

I expect she'll be here shortly to correct me or add to that.

---

The version on our web site is only available in Ogg Vorbis format. That's a deliberate incentive to spread the use of free (as in unrestricted by patent licencing, in this case) software.

The "demo" tracks are also available as MP3's.

Here I am in my lunchbreak at work. Glad you are interested in my version of Young Redin. I love the magical and superstitious elements in it, and the mediaeval form of justice at the end - trial by fire.
As Anahata ( treewind) says, I put the ballad together from bits and composed the tune myself, using as a model a variant of Young Hunting collected by Maud Karpeles and Cecil Sharp in the Appalachians. The original tune is printed as the last song in the oddly-named 'Eighty English Folk Songs' edited by Maud Karpeles - all of which were songs collected on Cecil Sharp & Maud Karpeles' expeditions to the Appalachians during the last century. ( The reasoning behind the title of the book is that the songs are versions of ballads lyrical songs and others that have been collected in England at some time.)My tune was adapted to carry a refrain and accommodate a different set of words that were complied from English rather than American or Scots sources.
Hope you all like it - when you manage to hear it!

TtR and others who think Ogg Vorbis is "over my computer's head":

As it says on the Ogg Vorbis web site (click Downloads...) - the popular Windows music player Winamp can play ogg files - it's not rocket science and you don't have to be running Linux!!!

Hi all! sorry I didn't reply sooner, but a few songs came over and we hung out in the front room with tea and gentle swearing... we get along well, and they are moving in!

I would be honored to have Mary and Treewind's version of *Young Redin*, but I'm certain that I am looking for another one to play, a full Scottish version...

BTW, I don't believe that a rocket scientist could get ogg to work on my ancient computer... But hey! it plays CDs... ttr
