Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: Allan C. Date: 02 May 03 - 12:42 PM He is unfortunately best known for his portrayal as "the Hungarian" in "My Fair Lady". Many of his other acting ventures were far better examples of his abilities. Something that not many know is that he is fluent in an astounding number of languages. I've always meant to add some of his recordings to my collection. Perhaps now would be a good time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 May 03 - 06:29 PM I believe the name is spelled "Bikel." I have some of his recordings, and they are marvelous. His voice and range of talents always seem to have been under-appreciated. I think he's one of those folks who speaks five or six languages. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: artbrooks Date: 02 May 03 - 06:38 PM I don't recall him as the Hungarian...but rather as Tevya. We also have a number of his phonograph records (and an operational record player). |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: John Hindsill Date: 02 May 03 - 08:01 PM Movie-wise [geez there's a 50s expression] I remember Mr. B. best as the southern sheriff, drawl and all, in "The Defiant Ones". I also have a slew of his vinyl material. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: Mudlark Date: 02 May 03 - 08:24 PM I know he *sings* in a lot of languages, and my Fr. aunt says his accent in that language is very authentic. Great to know he's still around. He was wonderful in a 50's film called The Little Kidnappers. Great voice, great choice, usually, of material...he used to be a little rough on the audience tho, soliciting questions and/or requests from unwary patrons, etc., then sort of cruelly shutting down any with the temerity to speak out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Happy birthday, Theodore Bickel! From: SINSULL Date: 02 May 03 - 09:07 PM Wasn't he the demented hatemonger on the Twilight Zone who found a way to shrink all the evil people and also found himself facing a 40' parrot? Weird but the first time I ever heard "Rising Of The Moon" it was sung by Theodore Bikel. |

Subject: RE: Happy birthday, Theodore Bikel! From: Frankham Date: 03 May 03 - 03:15 PM Theo is a venerable actor on film as on Broadway. The Lark with Julie Harris, The Sound of Music, Zorba, Fiddler on the Roof are some of his shows, films: The Russians Are Coming, Tonight In Samarkand,..check his filmography. Theo is a generous man. He has always been encouraging and kind to budding folksinging performers and he knows how to put on a party. He used to have big ones at the Washington Square Village in New York where you could see the likes of Dylan, Collins, Cynthia Gooding )who he has worked with) Bob Gibson, Glenn Yarborough, Limelighters and others around the NY area. He has MC'd great PBS specials on Channukah, Passover and other Jewish related themes. He deserves a happy birthday for sure! Frank Hamilton |
