Does anybody have anything more? I was a a bit surprised that it isn't (wasn't) in digital tradition. I couldn't find it on the web either.

jeffs

chorus
Honey in the rock for all Gods children
Honey in the rock, honey in the rock
Honey in the rock for all Gods children
Feed every child of God

If religion were a thing that money could buy
Feed every child of God
The rich would live and the poor would die
Feed every child of God

Some say Peter and some say Paul,
But I say one lord made us all

I'll climb and I'll climb that mountain top
I'll climb and I'll climb and I'll never stop

The tallest tree in Paradise
Some just call it the tree of life

Jeffs, thanks for giving me the push to take down the words to this. It's on a Guy and Candie Carawan LP, 'The Land Knows You're There' (1986; see a parallel thread for the title song). In the sleeve notes, Guy says: ' I heard the beautiful chorus to [this] from my neighbour Alice Wine when I lived on Johns Island, South Carolina. I added the verses, words and music, to make it a song I could sing.' - Susanne

Chorus
Honey in the rock for all God's children
Honey in the rock, honey in the rock
Honey in the rock for all God's children
Feed every child of God

If religion was a thing that your money could buy
> Feed every child of God
The rich would live and the poor would die
> Feed every child of God
But I thank my soul that it is not so
> Feed every child of God
Both the rich and poor together must go
> Feed every child of God

Some say Peter and some say Paul
Remember that the one God made us all
I'll climb and climb and I'll never stop
I'll climb until I reach that mountain top

The tallest tree in Paradise
People call it the tree of life
And all you little children
You got a right to the tree of life

1.Hypocrite, hypocrite, God despise; (Feed every child of God.)
Tongue's so clean, but he still tell lies; (Feed every...)

2. We can have justice if we care, (Feed every...)
Right is right and fair is fair, (Feed every...)
Heart to heart and hand to hand; (Feed every...)
Together we'll push to the Promised Land. (Feed every...)

3. When I'm happy I'll shout and sing, (Feed every...)
And make the heavenly spirit ring. (Feed every...)

4. One of these mornings bright and fair, (Feed every...)
Gonna take my flight in the middle of the air, (Feed every...)
One of these nights about twelve o'clock, (Feed every...)
This whole world's gonna reel and rock. (Feed every...)

5. If we're gonna be fair, we gotta open the door; (Feed every...)
We gotta house the homeless and feed the poor. (Feed every...)
If the chains hold us down, we gotta break the lock, (Feed every...)
Then we'll taste sweet honey in the rock. (Feed every...)

This song is the title song, if you will, form the book: "'Honey in the Rock' The Ruby Pickens Tartt Collection of Religious Folk Songs from Sumter County,Alabama" edited by Olivia and Jack Solomon and published by Mercer University Press (1991 isbn 0-86554-336-4). Mrs. Tarrt collected African-American folkore and songs for many years until the mid 1930's. She hosted and guided John Lomax when his Library of congress folk song recording project visited Alabama in 1937, 1938, and 1940. She deposited the bulk of her manuscripts in the Alabama state WPA office in 1938, with the understanding they would be sent on to the forwarding office. They were still in Montgomery in 1976, apparently the Alabama WPA Federal Writers' Project office closed before they could process the works. Other portions of her manuscripts similarly were misplaced, lost, borrowed etc within the disorganized bureaucracy of the WPA. The editors' notes state that this song is based on Duteronomy 32:13, Moses last speech to the Israelites : "and he made him [Jacob]to suck honey out of the rock". The Old Testament God's providing for the hard-pressed Israelites is combined with New Testament salvation and the "honey" becomes much more than mere sustenance. A version of this song was given to John Lomax by Vera Hall for the Library of congress recording project in Sumter County

HONEY IN THE ROCK

Mother, mother come and see
What the Lord have done for me
I am so humble
Never get tired
I am walkin' by my Savior's side.

Chorus:
Honey in the rock, honey in the rock
Oh it taste like honey in the rock
Go taste and see dear Lord 'tis good
Oh hit taste like honey in the rock.

Brother, brother come and see
What the Lord have done for me
I am so humble
Never get tired
I am walkin' by my Savior's side.

CH

Sister sister come and see/ etc.

Gambler gambler can't you see/ etc.

Sinners, sinners can't you see/ etc.

NOTES [85 words]: The current description is based on the Carawan/Carawan-AintYouGotARight text. - BS
The Victor ledgers for the recording by Blind Mamie Forehand credit her and A. C. Forehand with the authorship. The lyrics of the Forehands' recording are considerably different from the description of those in Carawan/Carawan-AintYouGotARight. They may be completely independent songs. I have not heard the Carter Family's recording, so I can't say whether it's the same song as the Forehands', the Carawans', or neither. - PJS

Sorry, no tunes in the book. You would have to see if the Vera Hall version was included in any of the Lib Congress recordings that were released to the public. There is another totally different "Honey In The Rock" that was adapted from a traditional source by Alice Wine and Guy Carawan. It can be heard on the CD by the Carawan Family "Home Brew" (1992 Flying Fish FF70609).

A different version of "Honey in the Rock" was sung by A.C. Forehand & Blind Mamie Forehand and was recorded in 1927 (on Storefront & Streetcorner Gospel 1927-1929, Document DOCD-5054). Still another version was by Five Blind Boys of Alabama, in c.1950/51 (reissued on Five Blind Boys of Alabama 1948-1951, FLY CD 946). The first three lines are the same as those in Sweet Honey in the Rock's version of "Sweet Honey in the Rock" below, which is a "new version by Bernice Reagon" (on Sweet Honey in the Rock, Flying Fish FF 70022):

SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK

Sweet honey in the rock
Sweet honey in the rock
Know it taste like honey in the rock
I come warm, I come gentle, and I come strong, and I come cooing
Know it taste like honey in the rock

Incidentally, Rev. D.C. Rice sang a song seemingly not related but containing the line "there is honey in the rock for you etc." repeatedly in his sermon record titled "A Sure Foundation" (1928) (on Rev. D.C. Rice 1928-1930, Document DOCD-5071).

HONEY IN THE ROCK

Oh my brother, do you know the Savior
Who is wondrous kind and true?
He’s the Rock of your salvation
There is honey in the Rock for you

Oh, honey in the Rock (oh, honey in the Rock)
Sweet honey in the Rock (sweet honey in the Rock)
Oh it tastes just like honey in the Rock
Oh taste and see if the Lord is good
Oh it tastes just like honey in the Rock

Have you tasted that the Lord is gracious?
Do you walk in the way that’s new?
have you drank from the living fountain?
There is honey in the Rock for you

Oh, there’s honey in the Rock my brother
There is honey in the Rock for you
Leave your sins fur the Blood to cover
There is honey in the Rock for you
