(March 27, 2006)—Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mexia for Country Hall Of Fame member and veteran country music songwriter Cindy Walker.

Walker died Thursday night at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia. She was 87.

Walker, who penned such country standards as "Cherokee Maiden," "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again" and "Warm, Red Wine" was born on July 20, 1918 in Mart, but spent most of her life in Mexia.

In 1941, Decca signed her to a five-year contract and Texas swing artist Bob Wills recorded four of her songs that year.

Her songs were recorded by a variety of country and pop artists
and over 400 of her songs made the charts.

'I was just walking out the door' was a favorite of mine.

Cindy Walker was great. I loved the stuff she wrote for Wills. Gotta love "It's the Bottle Talkin'" and "Still Love to Rock and Roll." I think the first song of hers that Wills recorded was a dustbowl anthem she wrote when she was 11. She left behind a great body of work.

Good link here.

I wasn't aware she'd authored "Dream Baby". That was a smash for Orbison.

Hello? "You Don't Know Me!"

Harlan Howard said she was the greatest country song writer. Now that is a complement.

yours,

Peter T.

A master of the craft and she left a body of work that has endured for over 50 years and music that people will continue to perform for years to come. Ms Walker, thanks for the ride.

Another good link here.

don't recall which site i saw a comment to the effect that
Cindy didn't showcase all of her awards in her home, but
stored them in a closet! Saying simply that she KNEW SHE HAD THEM!

I didn't recognize Ms. Walker's name before last week, when I stumbled across her name (along with co-writer Eddy Arnold's) when Googling chords-and-lyrics for "You Don't Know Me."

It was no more than a day later, as I was just getting my rendition of the song worked up, that my wife told me she had just heard an NPR report on the passing of a great country songwriter named Cindy Walker, and asked me if I had ever heard of her. I had to admit I really hadn't known the name until just the previous day, but that we had both heard some of her great work.

Thanks for the links in this thread, which helped me learn more about Ms Walker's wonderful legacy.
