Subject: Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 29 Mar 07 - 07:53 PM I received this message from Alan Hewson a friend of Scrump's today. "Hello all Some of you will no doubt have heard already that our good friends Paul and Frankie Gunningham were involved in an RTA at the weekend on their way to the airport. Frankie is now home with two broken bones and bruising. Paul is in intensive care with broken arms and serious head injuries. He is stable, and the doctors are making positive noises about his chances of a full recovery. He is sedated and comfortable." I have no further news currently, but will post it when I do. I have their address, but won't post it here. I'll find out if it's OK to pass it on, but in the mean time if anyone want's to pm me, I will pass it on if given the OK. I'll try to find a way of forwarding messages from this thread. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: JennyO Date: 30 Mar 07 - 06:09 AM Strange - when I read the reference to the RTA, I assumed it meant an accident, however here in Oz, RTA means something entirely different. It's the Roads and Traffic Authority - where you go to get your licence and registration etc. I figured he didn't mean that. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:17 AM Scrump is in there fighting, but it sounds like it will be a long battle. I received this message this morning. "Morning Steve We spent a couple of hours at the hospital yesterday, held his hand, sang him a song, talked to him. He is still sedated, there is improvement but it is very slow, less sedation and a better blood pressure ratio. The message though is essentially no change. Frankie is going in every day, I'll go again in a few days. I will get news of any change quickly and will keep you posted. All the best Alan" Alan and his wife Sue run the Baldock & Letchworth Folk Club and are very close friends of Paul and Frankie. They are obviously severely distressed by the situation, so although they are only too happy to act as a conduit for our thoughts and wishes I'm trying not to intrude to often. I will be going to the club on Wednesday, so should have further news on Thursday. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Apr 07 - 09:49 AM Well being stable is always the first step. Once the actual recover y sets in thigns often start to move much faster. Traumatised bodies need time to put themselves in order before they can heal propely. When he is conscious, give him our love and thoughts...I expect you will take a copy of this to him? Meantime, lets hope for a complete recovery. Never mind if it's a bit slow as long as it happens Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: katlaughing Date: 02 Apr 07 - 10:05 AM If it helps any, I know of a young woman who had what appeared to be severe head injuries from a car wreck in February. With time, she gradually got better and is now fully aware, working at gaining back her ability to act on her own through PT. The main thing is she woke up which they were not sure she would ever do. They had to induce a coma before she came out of the one the wreck put her in, so that her body could heal, much as MBSLynne noted. Anyway, she is doing marvellously well and they expect a complete recovery. May it be so for Scrump, too. Thanks for keeping us informed, kat |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 05 Apr 07 - 05:26 AM Went to Baldock last night (incidentally, stonkin' show by Isambarde). Alan reported that there is little change with Paul, but what there is, is in the right direction. The amount of sedation he is under is gradually being reduced and this is allowing Paul's blood pressure and other vital signs slowly to normalise. This can only be done gradually though, in line with the healing process. So there's still a way to go, and there's no certainty yet, but the signs are encouraging for an eventual full recovery. I've given hard copy of all the messages (on this thread and pm'd to me) to Alan to pass on to Frankie in case she's not had opportunity to look here. Frankie is of course visiting Paul every day, but I'm not pushing for any response to requests for direct contact. Now that Frankie has all the messages I'll leave it to her to decide whether, and then when, she thinks that is appropriate or desirable. Keep the healing thoughts flowing though. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Big Jim from Jackson Date: 08 Apr 07 - 11:20 AM When I read the first post on this thread I was surprised to learn that Scrump was Paul Gunningham, with whom I have been corresponding for several years through his Scrumpy and Western web site! I wish them both the speediest recovery. You can relay that I am still playing music from some of his favorite artists---Shag Connors, the Wurzels, the Yokels, Five Penny Piece, et al. Here in the middle of Missouri, USA, their music would be unknown here, were it not for Paul and his web site being a guide for me. Jim Hickam |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 10 Apr 07 - 10:55 AM Latest news from Alan. Needs no comment from me, just as Alan says, keep praying or whatever you believe in. "Hello everyone Thanks for your continued enquiries about Paul, and Frankie sends her thanks and appreciation to those who have sent card and best wishes for Paul. Frankie, Sue and I went to see Paul yesterday afternoon. He is now off the sedation and is much more comfortable now than he was. The superficial cuts and bruises are repairing well, as are his broken arm and wrist. There is brain damage due to the crash, and of course swelling around the brain which is reducing as his body heals. He is awake for longish periods, and as we talked and held his hands he was able to demonstrate that the he was aware we were with him, which was really nice to see. It is now a wait and see time as the drugs allow brain cells to regenerate, and how stimulation helps give him the will to improve. Keep you fingers crossed for his recovery, it will be slow. If you are religious then say a prayer for him, it is so sad to see such a lovely person in this condition. Say a prayer too for Frankie and their son Harry who is taking this very hard. Stay safe, and if you have a car without an airbag. Change it. Alan" |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: katlaughing Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:15 PM Thanks, Ref. That young woman I think I mentioned way back at the beginning of this thread, has just now been moved from the facility she was in to a rehabilitation place. Recovery has been slow, by necessity, but progress has been made and continues to encourage her parents and friends with the prospect of a full recovery. May it be so for Scrump, too. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 19 Apr 07 - 04:51 PM Sorry I'm late posting this, but there's not much to report, so I've been struggling to think of much positive to say. Paul is now breathing unassisted, but has virtually no motor function. He appears to be aware of his surroundings but cannot communicate. He had an MRI scan on Wednesday, but we had no news of the results by yesterday evening. Doctors expect him to continue to improve slowly but it will be some time before the possible full extent of his recovery can even be assessed. I'll keep you updated as soon as I hear anything else. Keep Paul, Frankie and Harry in your thoughts. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Bee Date: 20 Apr 07 - 11:02 AM Well "virtually no motor function" sounds better than 'no motor function', so hope is still available. Here's hoping for continued recovery. Sometimes recovery, though slow, is very good. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: katlaughing Date: 21 Apr 07 - 01:16 AM Thanks, Ref. Sometimes our bodies just take awhile to catch up and start healing. All the best, kat |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: MBSLynne Date: 02 May 07 - 07:14 AM I can only repeat that my thoughts and blessings are with him and his family. Humans have amazing powers of recovery and many people who have been told they will never do things again go right ahead and do them. Dum vivimus vivamus. (That may be totally incorrect Latin...I picked it up in my teens when I was into Latin but not learning it!) Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Grimmy Date: 02 May 07 - 07:59 AM I'd like to second what Lynne said. The human brain has the miraculous ability to re-wire itself when damaged. My thoughts are with Paul and Frankie at this time. Dammit to hell, it was just recently that Scrump and I were debating how to use a time machine. If only we had one right now. Be strong, lad. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: Singing Referee Date: 03 May 07 - 10:09 AM Here is the latest update on Paul's progress. Sounds like there's still a long way to go, and it may well be some time yet before an accurate prognosis can be given. "The most recent MRI results show lots of damage to the motor area of the brain, with small pockets of damage elsewhere. This tends to suggest that physical movement will be a real issue for Paul to overcome even if those other minor areas of damage have not affected him too badly. Only time will tell. I was last there on Sunday, (going again on Friday 4th) and Paul was quite animated for an hour or so until we wore him out! The feeding tube was to be rerouted directly to his stomach on May 2nd and the tubes to his throat removed. This should mean that he will be able to make noises and then hopefully talk fairly soon. We believe that we have seen real signs of improvement.... noises, facial movement, hand, finger and arm movements (looks like finger picking) and apparent scanning of newspaper pages held in front of his eyes. At this stage all we can do is hope that this is genuine progress, as some movement will be reflex. The doctors are talking about sending him to a specialist brain hospital in London for "rehab", but no date has yet been set.. Finally, we learnt a few days ago that the police have confirmed Paul was blameless in the accident.. The car that hit them was driven by a man who probably went to sleep at the wheel and crossed the carriage way. Thanks for your continued support All the best Alan I also asked Alan about the many requests I've had from Mudcatters and other internet forums to which Paul belongs as to whether it's possible to contact the family direct. This is his understandable response. "You are correct about Paul's many internet dabbling's! Frankie is now in contact with a member of "The Fivepenny Piece" so that is all under control. Frankie does go onto mudact and other forums, so the best wishes of online friends are seen and noted. However, as you will appreciated this is a difficult time for Frankie so please direct enquires via me for the time being, and Frankie will pass all of the messages onto Paul when the time is right. cheers Alan |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: GUEST,Natalie H Date: 08 May 07 - 11:30 AM I don't know quite what I am posting on right now, but I know Paul as 'Scrump' from the Karine Polwart forum and was very saddened to hear this dreadful news today. Bit too close to home for me! That's me speaking personally as well, not professionally (I am a qualified nurse btw!) The best thing I can say to Paul and his family and friends is be patient, stay strong, keep optimistic but realistic, and try to do all the things that he likes, for example playing his favourite tunes. The professionals won't probably know exactly what's happening with Paul and only time sometimes tells the full story. Already it's great to see that there has been some improvement. I want to pass on how very sorry I am to hear about this. Sending all the love possible in the world. To Paul, Hope to see you back online!! We're missing the regular gig updates of yours on the Karine forum!! You won't believe it either but I was round your neck of the woods this last weekend too. You just get better soon!! Huge love, Natalie H xxx |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: GUEST,A Scrump Fan Date: 09 May 07 - 07:45 AM Below is a photo of Paul (in the red T shirt) Scrump I thought some of you may like to to focus a little more 'personally' on Paul, by having his photo nearby. Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: George Papavgeris Date: 12 May 07 - 07:00 AM Latest from Alan Hewson: "We saw Paul on Thursday, and he drank from a cup having whispered "water" Drip now removed. The hole from the tracheotomy will take some time to heal. When he tries to speak, air escapes which is frustrating him! He is moving both legs a little, and the plaster cast should have been removed yesterday. All tiny improvement which give us real hope. he is clearly trying to communicate and haveing managed to say a few words to Frankie confirms his brain function is working on that level which is really good news." |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: skipy Date: 12 May 07 - 07:02 AM Great! Keep it coming. Skipy |
Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: George Papavgeris Date: 12 May 07 - 07:02 AM And Alan also prompted me to write this for Paul: For a friend George Papavgeris, May 2007 Can you hear me, mate? I would have been here earlier, I'm sorry I am late. The motorway's a bitch today, the car park's in a state. But you don't want to know about my own problems now, I'm here and I will stay as long as matron will allow. And I'll ignore the bandages, pretend it's a disguise. And I'll ignore the monitor, just look you in the eyes And talk to you And talk for you And talk of you Can you hear me, mate? Graeme and Gina send their love, and Sue and Alan too. The guys in the pub ask every day for news of you. Last night we raised a glass to you and talked about old days And yes, we trotted out all the tired old clichés Of how you talk, and how you smile, and how you tell a joke And Steven was all tearful, though he said it was the smoke. We drank to you We drank for you We drank of you Can you hear me, mate? I am embarassed and that's why I seem to hesitate, but There's something that I need to say to you, that cannot wait I could have told you long ago, I should have done and all, for it was you that had the accident and I the wakeup call. So I'll just say this one thing now, don't mean to be a bore: I loved the times we had and I look forward to some more. I 'll sing to you I 'll sing for you I 'll sing of you |

Subject: RE: Mudcatter Scrump From: George Papavgeris Date: 29 May 07 - 01:56 PM I just received the following from Alan Hewson, one of his best mates and fellow band member in Tam Lin: "It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you my wonderful friend Paul Gunningham died from a heart attack at 8.30 this morning. We don't know why this happened. Paul brought a lot of pleasure to everyone who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man, modest, witty and widely talented. I will miss him more than I can say. There will be a post mortem. I will let you know what the funeral arrangements will be in due course." I am stunned right now. |
