York district hospital. Just found out the results of tests. These new phones with internet access are both infuriating and wonderful. A tad pissed off but hey best foot forward. Didn't help listening to the guy in the next bed telling the consultant that his wife died during a bypass opp! Cheery little story

One of my surgeons reminded me, to them, putting in a new heart valve or doing bypass is like a mechanic changing the spark plugs or other tuning up of a car..a piece of cake, something they do everyday, whilst to us it's usually a once-in-a-lifetime thing. It's good to remember it's old hat to them.

Keep up with positive looking-forward thoughts of what you will do when you get out and if the roomie starts with what my grandson calls "tragic talk" tune him out, sing, hum, whatever you have to do, don't listen to him!:-)

Kendall had a three way by-pass in February 2004 and it did him a world of good. The Auld Bugger's doing pretty well on it now.

Peter, the apprehension is making things unpleasant, but getting things sorted out will probably make life better, if only that you can stop worrying. Of course, it may hurt a bit in the meantime. Get repaired and get well. Bypasses these days are routine.

Good idea! Here's the deal.....ya' gotta' trust me on this........When you get up against this sort of diagnosis the trick is to relax! I've had 4 heart surgeries plus an artificial valve and an implanted defibrillator in the past 14 years.... including a quad by-pass.

Bypasses and many other heart surgeries are very routine. Not that "routine" can't go wrong. I had an appendectomy last November and ended up not getting home until February. But see, if whatever the diagnosis and action that is needed, once you agree then it is exactly like riding an elephant downhill.   Its important to trust and believe in the Doctor......if you don't get a second opinion....or more.

So Peter.....You are now riding the elephant. When an elephant starts running downhill, all you can do is sit back, hang on, and enjoy the ride. If you have a bypass, the first 24 hours are a bit tough. After that things get better. Follow the post op routines and and take your meds. Hold on tight and DON'T fall off. You have all my best thoughts your way!

Peter, my mum had a triple bypass last summer. She feels better now than she had in years. First couple of days were tough, but got better pretty quickly after that.

Peter, I hope you're feeling much better today. And since I'm in the mood to fart about, lemme tell you about bypass surgery, all true to life as recounted by that friend I mentioned earlier.

He said that where his chest had been opened caused him very little discomfort. BUT, where they took some veins from his leg--well, THAT hurt like a sonuvagun for a few weeks. He was back on fire calls commanding a scene just six weeks after the quintuple bypass operation, and that's no word of a lie. He's like the energizer bunny: takes a lickin', keeps on tickin'. He did grumble about some dietary changes he was forced to make, and to my knowledge he still does, but he made them.

Another thing you won't like post-op are the damned coumadin (blood thinner) 'sticks' (although you may luck out and get pills instead). They are sub-cutaneous and they hurt like the dickens. Mine were given in the skin a few inches above the belly button. (I'd had a hip replacement.) When the nurse came in I would greet her with, "Well, if it isn't the Angel of Love and Light!" She would reply along the lines of, "I'll ask the doctor if we can halve the dose and double the injections." I would say, "You DO brighten my day." About a month later I took her a box of chocolates. Nice gal.

The thing that's so positive about waking up feeling like you've been run over by a lorry is the waking up part. As Kendall(?) mentioned, bypass surgery is routine these days. I'd get a bit apprehensive if your doctor walks in to the operating theatre carrying a copy of 'The Beginner's Guide to Grey's Anatomy', 'Surgery for the Novice' or 'How To Plumb Your Kitchen Sink While Taking LSD-25', but otherwise you'll waste lots of worry on something you don't need to worry about. There are as many possible complications getting teeth pulled, but I've heard that since the days of Lister hospitals have got a handle on the importance of cleanliness, and they understand the prophylactic measures necessary to prevent infection.

They know what they're doing. Believe that, because they really do.

Geeziz Bruce....You are a wuss. Those shots were "Lovenox" not coumadin. Lovenox is used short term and coumadin (warfarin) is in pill form and if you need to stay on thinners as I do, you have a check done about monthly to be sure you are getting the right dosage. Lovenox only works for a few hours.....coumadin is systemic.

My point is.......I've had to do Lovenox on a lot of occasions when I've had to be off coumadin and I gave the shots to myself! The needle is less than an inch long!!!! Admit it man.....you're a wuss!!!!!

LOVEnox? LOVENOX? They haven't told you I guess. It's just a fancy name for the old saltpeter treatment the army used.

What Sinsull said! And pay close attention to Spaw -- his encouragement and advice helped Tom through his valve job, tune-up and electrical work back in 2004. (That's replacement aortic valve, tricuspid valve repaired, double bypass and installation of a defibrillator -- his heart capacity was down to 20% but he never had a heart attack.)

You're part of a large club -- but ya gotta take care of yourself!!! (Please)

One word of advice as I think back on Kendall's surgery. Have a huge supply of comfortable bed pillows on hand when you return home. It will help you find a comfortable position for sleeping.
And if 999 wants to tell the biggest needle story, I will have to share my experience with a breast lump aspiration. Ahab came in, harpoon in hand screaming "Have you seen the white whale?" as he drove this monstronsity ten inches into my right appendage (I am rather well endowed. Didn't feel a thing. Match that you wuss!
