Subject: Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards From: IanC Date: 05 Feb 04 - 06:40 AM Mudcat 2004 Alternative British Folk Awards - Nominations! 2004 sees the second year of the Mudcat Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. Last year, a completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members voted to pick a winner in each of the categories below. Your nominations are sought for this year's folk spectacular.
Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
Last year a number of SPECIAL AWARDS were also included in the ceremony (see below). Your suggestions and nominations for any special categories will be considered by the committee. The "Two In A Bar Award" for the best nonexistent Session/Singaround
please PM me with nominations etc. by 1st March 2004 so that voting can commence in good time for the awards to be published on the now-traditional date of 1st April.

Worst Jumper worn by a folkie award Bernie Kedge of the now-almost-defunct Mayflower Club in Cambridge has to be a contender for that. Session nominations will mostly necessarily be local to the nominators. One exception: The Radway at Sidmouth. Only once a year but goes on all week subject to the pub closing at night. The Fox at Pirton (near Hitchin, 2nd Wednesdays) is a good one, real cracker last night. Anahata |

Anahata, Im glad someone else also loves Simon Ritchie, the man is a genius, a performer to the very sense of the word. I didnt really know who the other awards should go to, so I chose my band mates and friends of mine! Regarding the Thaxted Session, its every 5th Monday (i think) of the month, which usually means theres only 3 (i think) a year. I see you and Mary are playing down The Essex Singers Club, ask Keith Carpenter, as he regularly goes.You cant miss keith, his got big fuzzy hair, a big grin and looks northern, smokes like a chimney but only drinks one day a year. hope this is useful.Im not clued up on folk that much as im only 17, and have college to think about and my reputation! |

A year or so ago, Alan and Theo of "The Unicorn" fame started a monthly barndance in Hitchin town hall. The got good bands and excellent callers and made use of local performers (morris, sword dancers, mummers etc.) for the interval. It was a bit quiet to start with, but they have persevered and now it is quite a healthy and lively event with a regular following as well as a good few non-regulars every month. So ... Unicorn Ceilidhs, Hichin. Since I've said that, what about a secion for local folk magazines. I'll nominate Unicorn (Beds, Herts, Bucks) anyway. :-) |

I'd say it was up to the guests we have (eg the profressionals) to vote on that, but of could they are too tactful to do so. Any one of the many well-loved clubs could win if it succeeded in getting all its members to vote. I much prefer the idea of the silly alternative. Here are my votes: For a silly name coupled with being non-existant, I nominate the I nominate the Ashby-del-la-Zouche folk club as the longest-running non-existent club. The club itself folded perhaps 12 years ago, I forget the actual figure, but the Asby-de-la-Zouche away meeting is still held on the first Friday at Sidmouth each year, It is the only time the club ever meets. Kim Howells had nothing to do with it, mind, but isn't it silly?. I'd also like to second Les B's nomination for BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD.................GUIDE CATS FOR THE BLIND The CD is basically Les Barker little gems, sung or read by famous people. I note that the number of nominees is at least in one category significantly fewer than the nominees submitted in the preceding postings. Furthermore, I can see no way that the members who posted have determined which are selected for the ballot paper and which are ignored. Certainly, there are candidates in the ballot with only one nomination, while others have been omitted after receiving two or more independent nominations. THIS YEARS WINNERS ARE: PUB/CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR For the second year running, the winner is George Papavgeris. This year, though, a special mention to Duncan McFarlane who came a close second. PUB/CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR John Kirkpatrick won the award this year, with special mentions for John Breeze and Simon Ritchie. BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" GROUP / DUO Mary Humphries & Anahata were outright winners, being way out in front in this category. BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD This year's winner is "Guide Cats for The Blind" (compilation), with a special mention for "A Little Bit Off The Top" by Den Giddens HORIZONTAL AWARD (Best drinker) Once again, this was awarded to Hilary Ward who continues to claim that she doesn't remember drinking very much. BEST FOLK CLUB As might be expected, voting was quite spread on this one. In the end, there was a draw this year between the Bothy Folk Club, Southport and St Albans Windward. Special mentions also go to three close runners-up, (i) Everyman Folk Club, Benhall Green Nr Saxmundham, Suffolk, (ii) Llantrisant folk club and (iii) The Moorland Folk Club. BEST PUB SESSION (REGULAR) Once more goes to The Bull in Barton-Le-Clay who managed to muster more votes than all their rivals added together. BEST PUB SESSION (FESTIVAL) This is awarded to the Tap and Spile , Whitby with The Bedford at Sidmouth coming a close second. The Middle Earth, Whitby deserves a special mention having been narrowly pushed into third place. BEST FOLK FESTIVAL This award goes to Whitby, with Warwick coming a fairly close second this year. BEST FOLK DRAMA (the "We do it in the road award") There was heavy voting for all three nominations in this section but, in the end, the award goes to Cornwall Songwriters for "The Cry of Tin" ahead of the Belchamp Morris Men and Pace Egging at Lancaster Maritime Festival who drew for second place. BEST REGULAR DANCE EVENT The nomination for this category was uncontended (though supported by a number of you). The award therefore goes to Unicorn Ceilidhs, Hichin. BEST LOCAL FOLK MAGAZINE Similarly uncontended in this section was Unicorn (Beds, Herts, Bucks), and the award goes to them. SPECIAL AWARDS THIS YEAR Two SPECIAL AWARDS were made this year.
