Subject: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 26 May 00 - 07:53 PM I've had one of my ideas. How about a gathering here in Mid-Wales one weekend in late September/early October? I've talked to the landlady of the Red Lion, and she's prepared to accommodate people at a cheap rate, there are other places people can stay, including our house if you don't mind dogs and cats. Food isn't a problem, I can cook. And we can hang out at the Red most of the time.I can pick people up from Welshpool station if needed. How about it, anyone interested? Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Lanfranc Date: 27 May 00 - 07:15 AM Thread duly traced. I'd like to put a few names to faces, plus the chance of a little craic. It's a long way from Essex but not that far, really. Might even tuck McGrath in the back, if he fancies the trip and can suffer my driving! |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 27 May 00 - 08:36 AM Yes, depending what dates I finally decide on for visiting a pal in Crete, and if only to meet Alan Francis, whose contribution to the funniest song thread could have been me speaking! |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 May 00 - 07:38 PM This sounds quite possible - no clash with any other festival I'd be likely to go to. Here is the Folk Roots list I might take you up on that Alan.
(And later today, Bank Holiday Monday, various survivors of the Small Copper and others should be up in the afternoon at The Lion, Eastwick (just North of Harlow on the A414, from about 1pm on) with a barbecue in the pub yard (we'll be under cover.) Sorry about the thread drift there! |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 01 Jun 00 - 06:44 AM Sorry I can't be with you (sighs of relief all round) but having stayed in the area last year I can say to those who don't know it that it's great for walking* (if you don't mind a bit of mud), birdwatching, and you might be lucky(as we were) and see an otter on the canal or river. There's an interesting canal museum for those interested in narrowboats. As I spent four years in various parts of Wales I can attest to the natives' tolerance of saesnegg! Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 01 Jun 00 - 02:49 PM Terri, you can contact Julia or Jim at Pippins on 01938 810229. They do bed and breakfast at reasonable rates, and are expecting your call. They also have a caravan where people with sleeping bags can crash for a nominal fee. The Red lion also does B&B at a reasonable rate, and residents aren't subject to licensing hours. I haven't got the phone number handy, but can get it if needed. Mrs Duck, your caravan should be OK on the carpark for a couple of nights, I'm told. Hwyl, Bron. |

It looks pretty atmospheric too...I can see the movie in my mind already. Al things considered, it sound like a weekend to remember (if you get the cahnce to remember...)I hope I'll be able to come. I'll be in touch.

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: skarpi Date: 01 Jun 00 - 07:57 PM Hmmmm this is a good idea, I might come if I can get a good flight fair to London, but someone would have to come and get me there. It coult be a rest for me from all the work. We´ll see what happens. All the best skarpi Iceland. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 02 Jun 00 - 04:25 AM Hey, Skarpi, we'd all love to see you! You might get transport from those coming from Essex, but otherwise, you could get a train to Welshpool or Shrewsbury, and we can pick you up from there. London is about 150 miles away from here, and might just as well be a different planet!!! Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: sian, west wales Date: 02 Jun 00 - 04:35 AM Marcus Music *is* in Newport Gwent, and a good hour and a half / two hours south of Welshpool. Is there anything desperate you want from there? I've got to take something round to him at some point, and I'll probably also see him at Pontardawe Folk Fest. - he ususally has a stand there. Looking forward to Welshpool. My family is just north of there ... but I think B&B sounds like more fun! Sian |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 02 Jun 00 - 02:53 PM To phone the Red Lion, Llanfair Caereinion. 01938 810341. Tell Buff or Ron that you are with the mudcats, because they are not letting to anyone else. They have 2 rooms available, plus an attic room which is not luxurious, but very habitable. Once the Red and Pippins are booked up, I'll look for other B&B's. Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Eric the Viking Date: 02 Jun 00 - 03:19 PM This sounds a great idea if I am invited and so far the weekends look good. Skarpi you might be better looking to Manchester. It's (only just) possible that I can pick you up as I will have to go right past the airport in the evening on the way down. But don't take that as Gospel yet. Llanfair, are there any more details about accomodation? And can you give a definative weekend date-Also where are you? Mrs Duck will you have the ducklings? Cheers. Eric |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: GUEST,Rvconnelly@aol.com Date: 02 Jun 00 - 05:50 PM Can anyone come?? is it mainly music and playing or are there a number of singers out there?? |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 02 Jun 00 - 06:24 PM The date of the "gathering" is the weekend of the 14th and 15th of October, although I expect people will want to arrive on the Friday night, which will be our music night. In Llanfair Caereinion (clicky thing earlier in this thread) the main musicians are Simon, who plays and sings blues, David and Jo who are fiddlers and Ian who plays electric and accoustic guitar. I play guitar and sing, being around during the folk revival, and Jim, my husband, plays bass. He likes folk/rock, but, if he has too much strong ale, reverts to his rock roots, and all hell breaks loose!! Anyone is welcome, musicians and listeners. The Red Lion is not a large pub, but we all manage to squeeze into the lounge somehow. It's very cosy. Eric, there are 2 numbers inthe thread for B&B, and places to sleep if money's a problem. What else had you got in mind? Contact me if you need any more help. Bron. |

It sounds as if we might need to hire a marquee even if there isn't a suitable flat bit. I really hope we will get there it sounds great. If it goes well we'll have another next year at the Jug!!! I'm sure Bill would love that. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 05 Jun 00 - 03:23 PM Great, Patrish, it will be great to meet you. Don't you mean "he who is permitted to believe that he is obeyed"? says she with a smile. Hwyl, Bron. |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 07 Jun 00 - 06:13 PM This is great!!, the list of people interested is growing fast! Caravan rentals and campsites are not available within a 5 mile radius of the town, so I'm going to make some enquiries about letting cottages. There are a few within walking distance, and I'll let you know when I find anything out. No-one has booked at either the pub or Pippins yet, so B&B is still up for grabs. Talk to you soon, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 Jun 00 - 06:17 PM I'd imagine outdoor camping might be a bit chancy that late in the year. Any chance of indoor camping in a hall or somewhere? |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Jun 00 - 05:32 PM Keep us posted on the indoor camping possibilities. (That means a floor big enough for a sleeping bag in a building where the rain doesn't come through the roof. I am a man of fairly simple needs.) |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 12 Jun 00 - 11:25 AM OK, progress is being made! There is room behind the pub for 3 or 4 tents. Pippins have a caravan for people with sleeping bags who just need a roof and a little space. I am hoping to come, but I may have had an operation on my hand. What is the weather generally like at that time of year there? Is a tent worthwhile? (I know- no propmises of fine weather but generally?) I shall be coming (if I manage it) from Cleckheaton all being well. One other thing will the town/village have enough grub and beer (not that I drink it often)? |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Catlin Date: 12 Jun 00 - 04:34 PM I'm really excited now!!!!! I can't wait to see you all :) Do we have any idea of the number of people coming yet? |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 12 Jun 00 - 06:57 PM There have been almost 20 people showing an interest, and some have families, so that makes........a lot! There are three pubs here, the Black Lion where the noisy people go to watch football on the widescreen, the Goat, which is next door but one from me, where everyone looks at you when you walk in, and the Red Lion, where the gathering is to be based. It's only small, but we'll manage. The Goat has B&B, but I haven't asked them yet, because their rooms are more expensive. Food will be available at Pippins cafe, they are very reasonable, and there is a chipshop. The Red does meals as well, and we are thinking, weather permitting, of having a barbie on the Saturday night, leaving the fire hot enough to cook breakfast Sunday morning. The weather? well, we can have frost in early September, but very cold weather is not usually till after christmas. We are quite high up, and the town is surrounded by hills, which protect it a bit. TV and radio reception is lousy!! The area is beautiful in the autumn, and there are some lovely walks. The Centre for alternative Technology is 30 miles away, and if enough people want to go, I can arrange transport. There is no shortage of beer. The Red has Boddingtons and usually a guest beer. I'm really looking forward to this!!!Hwyl, Bron. |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: GUEST,KingBrilliant Date: 14 Jun 00 - 03:01 AM I think my car is about to terminally fail its MOT. Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 16 Jun 00 - 04:13 AM I'm wondering wether to hire the hall at the Institute (it's the village hall, i don't know why they call it that!) because the Red Lion is a small pub and it would give us more space. There's a stage, and it might encourage the locals to pop in for a listen. It is an "Arts and Crafts" peroid building, with a high, raftered ceiling. Looks good, but messes up the accoustics, sometimes. The pub is a 2 minute walk away, and you can fetch beer in. What do you think? Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 16 Jun 00 - 04:26 AM What are acoustics, Bron? Are they like the bounce back off the door of the khazi, when the family has banished their struggling musician to the smallest room? Sounds a reet grand idea to me. Skipjack |

If you are interesting about this year I got a thread going on it is called BS.Iceland Bluesky festival. Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 17 Jun 00 - 05:12 AM Skarpi, I live in the frozen north of England (not quite as frozen as Iceland!) and can't come via London, but there's 'Catters a plenty that will be coming from that direction. I'm sure one of them will collect you from Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted (McGraph?)whichever you fly into. As for accommodation, if you are prepared to rough it with a sleeping bag, there will be many others (like me) who are doing the same. It'd be grand to meet you, so I do hope you can make it. Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: sian, west wales Date: 19 Jun 00 - 06:06 AM Having skimmed the BS: Beer discussion, I'm thinking that if we're talking B-B-Q perhaps everyone should come with a four-pack of their local brew? Purely for research purposes, of course, and in the interests of trans-regional harmony (sorry, I've been reading EC documents this morning ...) Assuming that I can sort everything out to get the weekend off, I'll bring some Felinfoel. Apparently, they invented tinned beer (WWI soldiers' rations!) I've also been waiting for a reason to make Caitrin's Chocolate Chip Cookies, a recipe from a 'cat discussion some months back. Seems to make enough to feed God's army... This might be a good excuse... sian |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 20 Jun 00 - 03:11 AM Sounds good, Sian. Local beers sound even better! McGrath, I'm hoping to get to Whitby, so I'll need to know where everyone's meeting. Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 Jun 00 - 08:34 AM Here's a link to the thread where a workshop on the programme at Whitby was announced. I sent Graham Pirt a message enquiring if that's still one, but haven't heard back.
So if it is , that'd be the logical place for people to meeet. Otherwise I suppose lurcing into The Anchor or the Sailing Club and bellowing "Is there a Mudcat in the house?" might work. But I don't fancy doing that.
So far as Wales goes, I've every hope of being able to get there. but won't know for sure until much closer. So ideally I want to turn up with my sleeping bag, beer, and an instrument or so, and not have to camp outdoors unless there is unseasonally pleasant weather. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 20 Jun 00 - 12:32 PM Sleeping bag people are sorted. Buff, the landlady at the Red Lion is going to make space in her dining room for floor sleepers. NEXT!!!!!!! Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 22 Jun 00 - 03:17 PM Refresh, so that my son, Dave, can find it easily!!! All this Festival and gathering talk is so exciting!!!Hwyl, Bron. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 Jun 00 - 04:00 PM "Buff, the landlady at the Red Lion is going to make space in her dining room for floor sleepers." Great - I think we should make a resolution that for every pint of beer we bring from elsewhere (for research and comparison purposes), we drink at least two of hers. Shouldn't be that hard to keep that one. |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Micca Date: 22 Jun 00 - 06:51 PM with reference to Kevins post, I know (having very craftily asked when booking) what the cider in the Red Lion is, but what is the house beer??? Felinfoel? Brains SA or Dark? |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 22 Jun 00 - 07:06 PM Boddington's, Welsh Bitter, and a guest beer. Might I suggest a referendum to select the guest beer for the gathering? We've had Brakespear(sp) and Speckled Hen recently. I'm sure there will be no problem going along with the majority vote. Hwyl, Bron, |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Skipjack K8 Date: 23 Jun 00 - 06:50 AM Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, anyone? I'll drink Jeyes fluid with bilgewater chasers when the good stuff runs out, but seeing as I have a vote, I won't waste it. Adnams, Wherry (Woodfordes) or any from the Greene King stable wouldv suit my undeniably East Anglian taste. Bron, how about a mark 2 thread, as this is your baby? Skipjack |
Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 23 Jun 00 - 09:30 AM Yup!! |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Llanfair Date: 03 Jul 00 - 03:25 PM Didn't make it to Cleckheaton, hope you had a good time. NEWS....A place has been arranged for up to 5 caravans behind the light railway station. There are power connections, and it's a nice place by the river Banwy. MORE NEWS...... The field (teeny paddock) behind the Red Lion has flat space for about 5 tents. Buff has arranged for her dogs to go into kennels for the weekend, so no problems there. The hall at the Institute is booked. Hwyl, Bron. |

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Lanfranc Date: 03 Jul 00 - 05:25 PM If I can persuade my daily grind to let up for a day or four, I'll be there. I may have to take pot luck on accommodation since I am not sufficiently confident to book. Kevin, the offer of a lift still holds, if you don't mind waiting til a week or so beforehand for final confirmation. 96 (97 now) posts - quite a response, Bron.

Subject: RE: UK Mudcatters, Autumn weekend? From: Peg Date: 05 Jul 00 - 10:29 AM this sounds like a wonderful event. Even though I just returned from the UK I am dying to go back in the fall and this might be as good a reason as any...any room for a cappella singers who specialize in those sad, forlorn, Gaelic tales of lost love and premature death by drowning? peg |
