Subject: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: autolycus Date: 24 Mar 08 - 08:11 AM The opening is When I was much younger My brothers and me Used to play games Round a big conker tree I have just that on a 1986 Blooper tape (UK), but the singer never gets further than that. He keeps breaking up. It starts when he says, "Conker , take 1", then finds that hilarious. The song sounds most sweet, and his brief guitar intro is lovely. He - don't know who, sounds a bit chesty. I've googled a bit (conker song [brother]} without result. Ivor |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: katlaughing Date: 05 Apr 08 - 11:08 PM I think this might be it, after the intro it gets into it: Click here. (youtube) There are a few others, but that one seemed the best. THIS ONE came up because it is by a "Conker B." Worth listening, it's a beautiful song and voice. |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: Melissa Date: 05 Apr 08 - 11:09 PM I looked at a few playground game sites..no luck. Saying "Conker, take 1" would amuse me a lot too. Here's the best I could come up with. ***** http://www.mldb.org/song-169904-virgin.html And I think that I wish I was virgin And I smile and I think of you And my first, very first entry Clumsy and romantic My special mix in you Clumsy like the first step Clumsy like the first conker off the tree And romantic, like the wind that cuts your hair And romantic, like the glass that holds your drink Clumsy and romantic My special mix in you And I think that I wish I was young And I smile and I think of you And my first, very first true kiss Defensive and so coy Defensive like the jacket that holds your weight Defensive like the hat that holds you hair And coy like the first kiss, the kiss that first made you coy And coy like the tears, the tears that made you coy So gentle, so gentle it made you strong It made you strong, like the first kiss Clumsy and romantic, so gentle it made you strong Clumsy and romantic, the kiss that made you strong **** A Life in Pictures: The Conker Tree When I last walked down this lane I was just a boy, The puddles were much deeper then, The muddy water splashing With adventure And a drowned mouse Beyond all our attempts at revival. The blossom and the scent of wet nettles Have caught me now, But then it was the stingers and the frantic search For dock leaves, to stop the hurt. And finally the conker tree where Peter fell. The biggest ones are at the top He always said. He was the best of us at climbing But then the crash of falling branches, Leaf and conker cascading on his broken Young body, in the lane. The ambulance came with just a bell jangling And on a bike, a policeman Looking stern, writing names down Seeing we were all OK... Except Peter. So I'm walking down the lane after fifty years But Peter isn't here, just the same conker tree Which somehow seems much larger And I feel lonely Just thinking of the fifty years he missed And all for conkers, Which were never any bigger at the top. Footnote Conker = horse chestnut This poem is about the loss of a childhood friend and also about the loss of childhood. Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: GUEST,Patrice Date: 06 Apr 08 - 12:23 AM Hello~~This is actually in response to a comment you left some time ago.... Please help me our if you can. You mentioned the story, "The Fox and his Travels". I had a favorite story where a fox left his bag with people while he went to "Squantum". Is this the same story? If so, could you provide me with the date of the Childcraft book that has this story. I would really like to share it with my children! Thank you ever so much! I have been searching for this for a long time! Patrice |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: Melissa Date: 06 Apr 08 - 12:39 AM Hi Patrice, You might be able to find the thread you saw before by using the search box thingy at the top of the page. If you find that one and submit your question on that link, you might have better luck getting an answer. That would pop the old thread back into the current lineup. Good luck! |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: Peace Date: 06 Apr 08 - 02:05 PM NB: The story is entitled "The Travels of a Fox" and the name in the link above is spelled differently: "May I leave my bag here while I go to Squintum's?" Anyway, y'all have a great day. |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: katlaughing Date: 06 Apr 08 - 11:15 PM Hi, Patrice. I have made reference to "The Fox and His Travels" in a couple of threads. The version I have is in a Childcraft book, Volume 4 - Tales and Legends: Folk & Fairy Tales and was first copyrighted in 1931 and is in my 1942 edition. If I have time, tomorrow, I will post all of it in its own thread. It is a bit more elaborate than the one in the link and the place he goes to is "Squintun's." It has always been one of my family's very favourites. There is no author listed in my book. |

Subject: RE: Does anyone know the song 'Conkers' From: GUEST,Bernard Webber Date: 02 Apr 13 - 03:46 PM It was Jeremy Taylor on BBC Radio Bristol in the 70's. He was singing a song he'd just written. It was never issued commercially and the only surviving recording is the tape on which he keeps breaking out laughing whenever he says "conkers". |
