I was wondering how many of you dig the Freak Folk movement? Devendra Banhardt,The Moldy Peaches and cats like that. I think I am missing something somewhere. I like all kinds of music but I am not sure about this stuff I am not slamming it but I am not sure I get it.

I am happy to report that I have no idea what you're talking about. ;^)

I'm so out of touch with contemporary commercial music in general that I don't even recognize 3/4 of the names nominated for Grammy awards each year. It'll be years before I accidentally overheard a sample of any new genre.

I love the music of my adopted hometown of New Orleans; that's what I hear when I turn on my radio, that's what I listen to when I go out for an evening. Here, we have our own unique musical traditions, and we have plenty of musicans, young and old, creating new and vibrant sounds that have little to do with the rest of the world. Is that our loss, or everybody else's? I'd say the latter, but then I'm very prejudiced.

For examples of what I'm talking about, give an occasional listen to www.wwoz.org.* No telling what'll be on at any given moment, since there's no playlist and every volunteer programmer (DJ) decides what to play. If you can't get into what you hear, just try again later.

*Sorry; I usually blickify this, but too lazy this time

Freak folk is what you get if you mix the Incredible String Band with Led Zeppelin's weirder accoustic moments. Some of it is good, much is dreadful.

Well I watched the Number Nine video of The Mouldy Peaches and it was all right, kind of uninspired, but okay voices...I think I would have liked it better without the video as I didn't think the directing was very good on it.

I am listening to a whole album by Devendra Bandhardt and REALY enjoying it! You can, too, by clicking HERE. Poppa, there are even a couple of them you might like!

Thanks for asking about them, Jayto. I didn't know about them until now.

kat

I keep having people coming up to me asking me if I know Devendra and if I listen to him. I just can't get into it though.
Poppa Gator have you crossed paths with CC Adcock down in NOLA? He is an amazing guitarist and has some cool songs. He is classified as swamp rock and I really dig him. He had a cd with Island records out anout 10 yrs ago and it was great but didn't fly to well. The las I heard he had jumped back into the scene in NOLA and plays alot down there. I saw him backing Buckwheat Zydeco a few yrs back. He is a distant cousin of mine. If you haven't and see his name playing somewhere you should check him out man he is awsome. Freak Folk I don't know I dig experimentation but I don't know man a little weak for me.

I know "of" CC Adcock and have seen him onstage a couple of times. He plays Jazzfest every year, I think, as part of the same "swamp-pop all-star" aggregation, and also appeared as part of the house band at a tribute to Fats Domino shortly after Katrina which featured a long list of superb pianists taking turns playing Fats classics.

My impression ~ which may be wrong ~ is that CC lives elsewhere in Louisiana and justs pops into N.O. occasinoally for a gig or two.

Waddon Pete, glad you're enjoying 'OZ. I refer to it fairly often, and sometime think folks hereabouts might be getting sick of me on this topic; after postitg the above, I felt a little bit guilty at perhaps "hijacking" a thread on what's really a whole different topic. But, anyway, if I can recruit one "convert" at a time, every once in a while, I'm glad ~ for you!

Is "Freak Folk" the same as, or closely related to, the "Psych Folk" under discussion in another thread also begun today? Either label, or both, would once have intrigued me; I would have thought any such entity would be right down my alley.

But now that I's (gasp!) sixty, I'm thinking that it's all probably just angry and noisy, and something I could do without. The anger I understand ~ there's plenty enough in the world around us that makes me angry too ~ but I no longer feel the need to be reminded.

Kat, on your recommendation I'll give a listen to Devandra whatizname. (My first reaction was to assume that Devandra was a girl's name; guess I'm wrong again!)

Kat I will give him another try as well. I might get into it this time. We will see I have him playing right now and it is not what I remembered it sounding like. So i will give it another try.

Devendra, as I recall, usually has a pretty good boogie band playing with him. His voice, however, is definitely an acquired taste.
I once posted one of his songs, "Chinese Children", to a thread about the most stupid lyrics you've ever heard.

Is this like....

"Davy The Fat Boy"?

"Lydia The Tattooed Lady"?

"Allison Gross"?

"I've Got A Three-Handed Woman"?

The exhibited talking fish from "The Eddystone Light"?.....
