Subject: Joy Crampton From: r.padgett Date: 18 May 26 - 01:57 AM Joy was from Harrogate and her first interests were in shanty singing in the 1970s and latterly in playing concertina to a high standard Roy Hardacre played in a duo with her late husband and after his early death Joy trained as a physio ~ her memory was applied to this learning and she worked I believe for many years in this profession ~ I last spoke to her at Whitby ff some years ago RIP Joy |

Subject: RE: 2026 Obit: Joy Crampton - UK From: Dave the Gnome Date: 18 May 26 - 03:00 PM Oh no! How sad. I was on the same Morris side as Joy. Cononley Morris. She was a great concertina player but chose to dance for Cononley instead of playing music and was equally good at that. She was on here very rarely as, I think, Spectacled Warbler. I should have realised something was wrong as she had been deleting lots of earlier Morris conversations. I intended to get in touch and wish I had now. Sigh... RIP, Joy. |

Subject: RE: 2026 Obit: Joy Crampton - UK From: GUEST,Joe G Date: 22 May 26 - 05:37 AM I'll post my personal thoughts about Joy when I am back from holiday but here is an obituary compiled by members of the Topic Folk Club where I first met her in 1982 when I moved to Bradford Joy Crampton As many of you will already know, Joy Crampton died on Wednesday 13th May, after a long battle with cancer. The funeral will be held on Thursday 4th June, at Shay Grange Crematorium, 12.45. Address: Long Lane, BD9 6ST. We expect it will be busy, and will finish at about 2.pm. No dress code: wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Long dangly earrings encouraged – she loved them. No flowers: she loved them too, but felt they were better left in the ground. We understand that a wake at The Raggalds in Queensbury is being organised for after the funeral, but we don't have any details as yet. Joy had a long association with the Topic, especially in the 1980s. Trevor Charnock remembers her first coming to the Topic in the early 80s, as someone he recognised as a ‘proper folk enthusiast’. She became a Member in 1982, was co-opted onto the committee in 1984, and then took on the role of Treasurer the following year. She always arrived early on club nights, to help arrange the room, and anything else that needed doing. And always found time for a chat withTrevor. Joy married fellow committee member Stuart Crampton in 1985, and the two of them headlined at the Topic in August that year. Stuart was also in a duo called Herrings Belly, which headlined in 1987. Tragically, Stuart died following a motorbike accident later that year. Joy gave up the Treasurer role the following year, and Trevor remembers her saying she was leaving her job in banking to train as a nurse: this being a more rewarding career for her. Joy was made a Life Member of the Topic, but from then on her involvement was more limited. Though she still came to Topic nights. John Waller remembers meeting her when he first visited the Topic in 1996, and was immediately impressed by her enthusiasm for live music, especially if it involved joining-in choruses. Later, she was very helpful in providing details of the 1980s scene for a history of the Topic he was writing for the T&A. She’d attend the Folk Festivals on the Yorkshire coast, and join boat-based folk-club visits down the west coast of Ireland. Her enthusiasm spread to other venues in the Bradford and Shipley area, including the informal singing sessions originally known as the Wagoners, now based in Wibsey’s Gaping Goose. And Shipley’s Live Room, where (again) she volunteered to rearrange the chairs ready for events there, as well as enjoying what they put on. For five years she threw herself into the Roll Back the Carpet dance side, getting into the Appalachian spirit with energy and enthusiasm. She had a very sanguine approach to life, and all its setbacks. It’s happened. Get over it. Her medical background meant she knew exactly what was happening to her over the past year, yet she remained unbelievably positive, even cheerful, throughout. She will be very much missed by the wider musical and dance community, and the many, many people who will consider her to have been a personal friend. With thanks to Trevor Charnock, Joy Leach and John Waller for their contributions. Joy Crampton, friend of so many, may you truly rest in peace. Tony Charnock Topic Folk Club |
