Subject: The Salt From: Troll Date: 11 Apr 01 - 10:20 AM I'm looking for the tune called "The Salt". It was done by Kevin Coneff on a Chieftans tour about eight years ago. I've found it in the DT (although the song that comes up under "S" is not the right one) but I do not have the melody. A CD where it is recorded would be fine or the music in standard notation as I have access to musicians who are paper trained. troll |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: MMario Date: 11 Apr 01 - 10:34 AM This is one of the DT "missing tunes" - hope someone can locate it!

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Sorcha Date: 11 Apr 01 - 11:11 AM Coneff joined the Chieftans in 1976, and this page gives a link to a complete discography with all albums and tunes listed. "The Salt" is not there on any album, so it must be a "live concert" tune only. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Troll Date: 11 Apr 01 - 05:58 PM Mario, if you search the word "salt" in the DigiTrad search, it's #29. Why you can't find it on an "S" search is beyond me. Sorcha, I think that you are probably right. I heard it in concert. I wish there was a way to contact Kevin Coneff and ask him. troll |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: MMario Date: 11 Apr 01 - 09:39 PM Troll - the lyrics are there. However the DT has no TUNE to go with the lyrics. that';s what I meant by "missing tune" |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Troll Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:05 AM Oh. Well, color me dumb. troll |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Sorcha Date: 12 Apr 01 - 01:19 AM I looked and looked for a booking address for the Chieftans so you could e mail Kevin and (maybe) ask him. No luck. Tomorrow I will e mail the Aunt who works for Walnut Valley Festival and ask her. WVA has booked the Chieftans since Kevin joined them. We'll see. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Sabine Date: 12 Apr 01 - 02:49 AM troll, if you post me your address via email I could make you a copy of the tape I have. It is quite old but if you don't mind the bad quality I'll post it to you. I know that I have the tape but first of all I have to find it ;-) The melody is very simple I could sing it right away. But a. you wouldn't hear it and b. my colleagues would kill me *g*. My email address is webmaster@cantalibre.de Regards Sabine |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 12 Apr 01 - 09:33 AM I think the tune is that of a jig called "The Wheels of the World" - not that that's much help! Regards |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Salt From: Sorcha Date: 12 Apr 01 - 11:18 AM JC'sTunefinder has a lot of choices for Wheels of the World, in both 4 and 6. Several key choices, too. Click here Should be the search results page. If you want sheet music, click on a blue G (for gif image). |

Subject: 'The Salt' From: GUEST,Dave Date: 20 Jan 02 - 10:58 AM I am looking for the tune that the song "The Salt" is sung to. I saw the bodhran player sing it in concert several years ago. The words are posted but I would like the tune. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: 'The Salt' From: Sorcha Date: 20 Jan 02 - 12:34 PM In this thread (above) it looks like we decided that the basic tune is "Wheels of the World", which you can find at JC's Tunefinder. Several choices for key, etc. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: 'The Salt' From: Nerd Date: 20 Jan 02 - 10:26 PM Kevin Conneff (I presume he is 'the bodhran player' you mean) sings it on his solo CD The Week Before Easter as well. You can order it from good folk record dealers...
