You 'll find it in our Digital Tradition database at this spot. As to chords, the basic triad of C--F--G (of G--C--D, or D--G--A) will handle it nicely -- work out the changes by ear and you'll be right.

There's also a very nice version of this song relating to Playboy Bunnies in the Mudcat Songbook.

You could try a search in DigiTrad. Dungeon will work fine as a search string.

I was reading some notes put out be Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop that gave some background on the song as well as Merle's other mining songs. In the early 1950's Merle's popularity as a country singer was waning—though not his reputation as a guitarist—when someone suggested he make an album of folk songs. Merle didn't want to do that because "all the folk songs had already been recorded." "Well then write some." was the reply. The result included both "Dark As A Dungeon" and "Sixteen Tons."

Dom--
I know you've been deluged with words. Here are two different settings for D as a D. My none-too-discriminating ear heard it the first way, but I have much more fun with #2.

/G/Well, come on, you young fellows, so /C/young and so /D7/fine;
Don't /G/seek for your fortune way /C/down in the /G/mine.
It'll form as a habit and /C/seep in your /D7/soul,
Till the /G/blood in your body runs /C/black as the /G/coal.

It's /D7/dark as a dungeon and /G/dank as the dew,
Where the /D7/danger is double, and /G/pleasures are few.
/G/Where the rain never falls, and the /C/sun never /D7/shine;
It's /G/dark as a dungeon, way /C/down in the mine.

/G/Well, come on, you young /Em/fellows, so /C/young and so /A/fine,
Don't /G/seek for your /Em/fortune way /C/down in the /D/mine.
It'll /G/form as a /Em/habit and /C/seep in your /A/soul,
Till the /G/blood in your /Em/body runs /C/black as the /G/coal.

It's /D/dark as a dungeon and /C/dank as the /G/dew,
Where /D/danger is double, and /C/pleasures are /G/few.
Where the rain never /Em/falls, and the /C/sun never /D/shines—
It's /G/dark as a /Em/dungeon, way /C/down /A/in /D/the /G/mine.

???
