Camping & Caravan Club

I'm trying to decide between The Camping and Caravan Club or The Caravan Club. I know they both have folk sections. Are there any Catters out there in either to help me make my decision please?

Well, Rhiannon, both have sites in Ashwell. Not much help there.

Wow that was fast! I know Ashwell - beautiful place and a great pub (Three Tuns). Used to live there (Swan House) in an earlier time.

I am in The Camping and caravan club, which is a much larger organisation than the weedy caravan club, and has far more camp sites and certified locations. The main thing is though, are you a camper or a caravanner? The caravan club is no use to you if you are a tent dweller.

Tuns is OK (Bushel was rubbish but is better now and does Broadside) but Crown is best ... I live next door and we have a session 1st Monday every month (for the last 10 years) about 8:30.

The Caravan Club were going to adopt one of my songs as their song at one time. They even went as far as to order 70 cassette copies then the woman who was in charge left so it went into forget it bin. The HQ of the Caravan Club is in East Grinstead, a place which is the subject of ribald jokes in THe Norman Conquests by Alan Ayckbourn, and Winnie the Pooh lived with Christopher Robin just down the road from there.

However I should not let any of these considerations weigh too heavily......

The Camping & Caravanning Club has a folk section, but it is regionalised and is much stronger in some regions than others (pretty pathetic south of London).

I don't think that the Caravan Club has a folk section - we're in both at the moment, but the folk Section of the C and C in my opinion is for families, they often form a band and have barn dance evenings. As you might guess we don't use it - as a 'floor singer' I prefer to caravan on a 5 van site, in an area with folk clubs nearby - it really depends what your're looking for.

Actually, I think the Caravan Club did have a folk section once at least. They once contacted me about the Ashwell site and folk sessions locally.

Don't know from a folk view as such but I have been told that the Camping & Caravanning Club have some sort of a deal going with some of the ferry companies for a discount along the lines of if towing a caravan you don't pay extra you only pay for the car. I have no idea if there's a discounted rate for campervans, but here's the Camping & Caravanning Club website .

I'm a member of both, if only to have access to more sites. I generally find the Caravan Club sites have the edge on luxuriousness (eh?) but that does not mean the Camping & Caravan Club sites are poor, far from it, they are as generally much better than commercial sites where profit is king. The C&C club is run by friendly enthusiasts.

I'm in the folk section of the C&C Club, but have found it to be a bit out of touch with the 'real' folk world. Their weekends are pleasant enough, but if you want a do where you can have a damn good sing, drink too much beer, play hairy tunes and generally have a fantastic time, then it's probably not for you. The few Mudcat gatherings I've been to are more to my taste. Please don't let me put you off, they're both very good clubs and I have no intention of leaving either.
