Subject: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 03 Jan 01 - 09:27 PM I started creating a page at mp3.com last weekend, right before the flu hit me. I was just using my little computer mic, they are unaccompanied, so no big "studio" sound from me, no back up band, just singing. It took awhile for the approval process, especially because it was a holiday, and I'm still trying to get some of the jpg art "album covers" to show up...
I know that there are Mudcat members who are on mp3.com and I would like to see them add a link to their pages in this thread. Maybe we can give each other support and also have this chance to hear each other, (especially for those of us who can't get into HearMe).
Here is a link to my page with three songs at this point in time:
Here are two people that I know are on mp3.com, and I am sure there are other Mudcat members.
Please add links to your pages. |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Liam's Brother Date: 04 Jan 01 - 12:06 AM Well, Alice! I have never heard MP3 before but I could not have imagined any more delightful way to be introduced to it than by hearing you sing "The Winter It Is Passed." Very charming!

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Willie-O Date: 04 Jan 01 - 05:20 AM My mp3 page is at: It has a variety of trad and original material including Paddy West, All For Me Grog, some original instrumentals and songs. The most popular track is the slow tune "The Long Walk Home" which even broke into the Celtic top 40 briefly. There's a CD one can purchase online if one wishes. I'm listening to Alice right now--very, very nice. Even on a lo-fi connection. Thanks for the thread, Alice! Warning! Keeping an mp3.com site can be an even more absorbing hobby than Mudcat. Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 04 Jan 01 - 09:58 AM Dan and Allan, thank you for the compliments. I'll add more now that I'm feeling better. I lost the weekend being sick, and since I recorded those Friday night and then was immediately flat out sick, I kept having weird dreams about mp3's!! Next song planned to go up is Kitty of Coleraine.
Susan AR, I really enjoyed reading about your Civil War group. I have to download each song though, since I can't get streaming to work for some reason, but I'll do that later and listen. Alice |

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 12:45 PM I'm creating an mp3 "radio station" of just Mudcatters from this thread. It is called THE WILD BIRD'S NEST. Frank, when I choose CelticDragon, all it gives me is a song called "Aftershock" to add to the station, not the song titles on your page. Why aren't your songs available?
I'll post a link to the station when I'm done. Maybe we can add this to resources? It would be a way to easily listen to samples of Mudcat member works without having to go to each individual mp3 page. Alice |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: wildlone Date: 06 Jan 01 - 04:36 PM I like browsing mp3.com and just downloading a few songs/tunes to listen to while I surf the net. thanks for the links very good all of you. A guy I listen to a lot is David Kilpatrick. As far as I know he is not a mudcatter but you can find him here "click" . Check out Bell Pool |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 06:26 PM Here is the Mudcat member "radio station" I created at mp3.com as a result of this thread. I'll add more samples to it as I get time.... burning out at this point. Bill Cameron is right, tweaking the mp3 pages can get as addictive as Mudcat. The Wild Bird's Nest |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Sourdough Date: 06 Jan 01 - 08:37 PM I went to listen to The Wild Bird's Nest. I discovered that All for Me Grog played fine but your (Alice's) pieces were garbled as though they were being played back in my machine without a buffer (ff-on-off-on-off-on etc). However, there had been an indication in Win Amp that the program was prebuffering on this end. It may be my problem but in case it isn't, I thought i would let you know. Other Mudcatters cans ee if they have similar problems. Sourdough |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 06 Jan 01 - 08:59 PM thanks, Sourdough. I'll see if I can get an answer from mp3.com support. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 08 Jan 01 - 10:01 AM mp3 support said there are some things their engineer staff are working on.
Here is an addition to the Wild Bird's Nest, the Mudcat station I put together - Celtic Dragon. There is another band on mp3 called CelticDragon, so a bit confusing in finding the one that is Mudcat related. |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jan 01 - 06:52 PM Alice, what a wonderful idea! Thanks for making it so! I've been frustrated at not being able to get my brother's classical works and songs on mp3. Each time I'd hear about another Mudcatter doing it, I'd get after Rog that we needed to do something. Yours was the one that did it. :-) We went out over the w/end and bought a keyboard with midi. SO, now I've got all of this classical music and songs to get into the computer, mix, etc.! What fun, though! Thanks!! Paul G. NICE TO SEE you!!! SeanM. I think you shoud have official status as the Link Fairy! You all sound wonderful!! kat |
Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: Alice Date: 09 Jan 01 - 12:56 PM Sourdough, this is the response I got from tech support when I asked them about the on/off problem you had when listening to my songs. It doesn't explain why you could hear Willie-O's song while streaming, but the information may be of help to others trying to listen at mp3.com. I also found out that artists get paid a few more pennies if the files are downloaded instead of streamed. I'm still new to the site, figuring it all out (and climbing in the charts) now being promoted by Celtic Ways, like Jenric and Celtic Dragon. Hello,
Please make sure that they are using the play quality recommended for their connection type. If they are using a 56k dial-up Internet connection or slower, it is recommended that they use 'Lo-Fi' playback.
If you are using a connection faster than 56k (ISDN, DSL, cable, etc.) and are still experiencing problems, please try 'Lo-Fi' playback. If 'Lo-Fi' playback works correctly, you may want to try changing the 'buffer' settings in the player you are attempting to use. For instructions on changing buffer settings, please contact the creator of your player.
Here's some info regarding the functionality of the playback links:
Hi Fi: This will stream (play) a 128kbps high-quality stereo MP3 file; high bandwidth (T1, T3, DSL, ISDN, "cable modem" or equivalent) required.
In addition, all Radio Play links on the MP3.com site will now stream (play) 24kbps MP3s.
If your player is not functioning properly, download and install the most recent version of your player. You can also download a file called MP3.fix (for PC users only, NOT FOR MAC USERS). You can find it at:
http://software.mp3.com/software/individual/windows/utility/2794.html
If you are unable to obtain a copy of MP3Fix and you are still unsuccessful after attempting to use MP3Fix, or are a MAC user, please visit the FAQ on setting your MIME types located here:

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on MP3.com From: GUEST,Willie-O Date: 10 Jan 01 - 08:01 AM I'll try the mp3fix thing...my ability to stream anything from mp3.com, even at Lo-Fi, is extremely flaky. For some reason it's often the case that I can play the "artist radio" on an mp3.com artist page, but clicking on play for a particular song usually takes me straight to the mp3.com "help" page--which is no help at all, tells me my computer isn't properly equipped to play mp3's (wrong) and to download MusicMatch (which I don't want). Thanks for the hint. W-O |
