Subject: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: curmudgeon Date: 16 Jul 07 - 08:28 PM This Saturday, 27 July, being the third of that name, will be the monthly shanty/forebiitr/balld session at the Press Room, 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth NH, 3:30 - 7:30. I know that some of the regulars will have Rolled and Gone that day, but we're looking forward to some other Maine folk as well as the locals and the crew from Cape Ann (sp?) - Tom |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Jul 07 - 06:50 PM I won't be able to make it this time due to an influx of relatives from the UK. My daughter and her family will be here tomorrow and are not into the music, unfortunately. |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: curmudgeon Date: 21 Jul 07 - 09:10 AM Although attendance is looking a mite sparse at this point, we will be joined by Bill and Gina Dunlap. Doryman and Mate are "iffy." Haven't heard from Jeri or Barry yet. Anyone else? |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: Jeri Date: 21 Jul 07 - 01:57 PM I'd forgotten what day it was! I'd intended to be there, but it's looking likely I'll stay home. Too much to do, not enough time before Monday (I'm elsewhere tomorrow) and I've had a headache since I woke up yesterday morning. |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: Barry Finn Date: 22 Jul 07 - 02:08 AM It was a lightly attended session but heavlly lopside with Cape Anner's, minus the Souza's. There was a concertina admiration break, could've developed into a squeeze-in if one more bellow blew in throgh the doors. Gina & Bill Dunlap were up from Conn. David, your "Sailor's Way" that you did such a nice job on is by Trad & can be found in Doerflinger's 'Shantymen & Shantyboys'. It was a good session, if you want more info attend the next one, Ha,Ha,Ha. Barry |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Jul 07 - 01:35 PM There is NO legal limit on concertinas... Perhaps a lightly attended (but certainly not too sparse!) session, but full of strong singers. Hutch was there in the early part (concertinas in tow), George with his new concertina, David (with concertina) and Rose, (Colin begged off), Gardi, Alexander, Gina and Bill Dunlap, Barry Fin and his wife Justine (who doesn't sing with us often enough) and Tom and I. "Poor Howard" Stith and his wife Barbara showed up just before the session ended . Great to see him again! Wish we'd have had time to get a song out of him -- maybe "Farewell, Superior Sperm" about the decline of the Great Lakes freshwater whaling industry. Both George and Bill introduced songs I'd never heard before. Yesterday was sooooo long ago! Let's see if I can remember what I sang, at least: "Plum Island National Anthem", "Home, Dearie, Home", "Sandgate Girl's Lament", Tom Lewis' "Sailor's Prayer" and Jerry Bryant's "A Shanty From Old Shantytown". Oh, and "Race of Long Ago". Plenty of songs from others to join in the choruses, too. Linn |

Subject: RE: July Shanty Session @ the Press Room From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jul 07 - 07:53 PM Thanks, gang, for the reports! I like to think the world rolls on even when I've in orbit somewhere else. Richmond Days went off well with splendid weather for the first time in three years. We even got the fireworks off! The Lawnmower Race is still a work in progress but the Duct Tape Fashion Show had more contestants than prizes. The Belt-sander Race had it's first run and we'll probably prime it for another year. The pig scramble was an amazing success; six years olds are about on par with the piglets. Judy did her usual good job running sound for the open mic and the 1 hour featured performers. The main evening acts did their best to blast everyone off the waterfront into the river. The grand parade went off without a major hitch. I'm ready to sleep for a week! Of course, today I was down in my home town of Georgetown performing with Alison Freeman at their arts festival, and then we all adjourned to the Five Islands wharf and enjoyed fresh lobster and corn on the cob. Life goes on! Next Saturday is our big Songs of the Sea Concert at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine. Do consider coming. Featured performers will be Bob Webb, Roll & Go, Castelebay, and Alsion Freeman. More info on the Bill Bonyun Benefit Concert thread. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
