Subject: Obit Johnny Dankworth From: Emma B Date: 06 Feb 10 - 07:26 PM "Sir John Dankworth, who died today aged 82, was one of the totemic figures of British jazz, the first major jazz musician and the first British bebopper to be knighted, a leading musician, who with his wife Dame Cleo Laine, became known to the broader public beyond the jazz world and to an international audience" |

Subject: RE: Obit Johnny Dankworth (6 Feb 2010) From: alanabit Date: 07 Feb 10 - 01:25 PM I know for a fact that he and Cleo Laine gave a lot of support and encouragement to many young folk singers and musicians. He was clearly one of the good guys and I am sure he will be missed by many. |
Subject: RE: Obit Johnny Dankworth (6 Feb 2010) From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 07 Feb 10 - 05:19 PM Well, he was in his 80s, still playing, so I think he had a lovely life, doing what he loved.. I used to love watching he and Cleo, I thought she was so pretty, with the *most* amazing voice! As Tug says, Johnnie seems to have always been there, along with Cleo. |
Subject: RE: Obit Johnny Dankworth (6 Feb 2010) From: Gurney Date: 07 Feb 10 - 10:29 PM An achieving family. Sir John, Dame Cleo. Their sons are jazzmen, too. Cleo got the news when she was onstage, and announced it. |
Subject: RE: Obit Johnny Dankworth (6 Feb 2010) From: bubblyrat Date: 08 Feb 10 - 12:54 PM No,she knew before the show, actually, but didn't reveal the news about John's death until the show was over ; apparently, she didn't know if she'd be able to perform like that without breaking down, but in the end she coped, somehow;a quite remarkable achievement by any standards, but then,as she said, that's how her husband would have wanted it. |
