Subject: Lyr Add: Welcome (Jon Fromer, 1946-2013) From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Jan 14 - 12:11 AM Some of my favorite singers sang this song one evening this week at San Francisco's Camp New Harmony. I didn't know Jon Fromer, but he was well-known and highly regarded in the San Francisco Folk Music Club. I've worked a lot with immigrants over the last two or three years, so I found this song particularly poignant. WELCOME (Jon Fromer) 1. Welcome, come on into my land It's your land too; now…want to shake your hand I want to know your story, the journey you've been on Want to hear your language; want to learn your songs The earth knows no borders, just one sky above And friendship has no fences…no walls can stop the love 2. Welcome, make my home yours These arms are open, and so are the doors Faces of the world are all around us today Many voices make for harmony, let the music play My life is richer for your presence today Let's break bread together, while our children play. 3. Welcome, I hope you like it here I hope that you are safe, and your children without fear But if they come to take you in the dead of the night I'll be there beside you, to stand up for your rights I will harbor you; I'll fight for you, as you would do for me And when everyone is welcome, we will all be free Welcome, I say welcome, you are welcome. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Welcome Roy Bailey (by Jon Fromer) From: GUEST,Gazza2 Date: 09 Aug 15 - 12:33 PM Welcome seems to be starting in D. Usual A and G works but a bit lost on minor chords. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Welcome Roy Bailey (by Jon Fromer) From: GUEST,# Date: 09 Aug 15 - 01:27 PM I will provide them. In the key of D, the three main chords are D, G and A7. The chords that will usually be found with them are called their relative minors, because they are related. (We don't need to go into why just now. It's one of those 'just do it and we can get technical later' things.)elative moinor called D has a relative minor called a Bm. G has a relative minor called an Em. A has a relative minor called an F#m. Some people avoid the 7th--I'm one of them--just because I don't usually like the sound of it. YMMV and you go right ahead and use it if you like it. Most music and guitar backup is a matter of taste. If it sounds good to you, do it :-) There are a few online places to see what the chords look like. Here's one of them. http://www.chordie.com/chords.php You may encounter many chords there that at present have no pertinence to what you want to play. That's ok. Don't worry about it. Some will sound wretched first time you play 'em. That's ok too. They may need other chords to provide the musical setting for the sound it makes. Start with fairly basic chords and don't worry about making mistakes. |
