Mary Jane...I'm looking for "Daughter," too - I have only the chorus. Here's what I've got...Tiger

SWEET ROSIE O'GRADY
Words and music by Maude Nugent, ©1896.

1. Just down around the corner of the street where I reside,
There lives the cutest little girl that I have ever spied.
Her name is Rose O'Grady and I don't mind telling you
That she's the sweetest little Rose the garden ever grew.

CHORUS: Sweet Rosie O'Grady,
My dear little Rose.
She's my steady lady
Most ev'ryone knows.
And when we are married,
How happy we'll be;
I love sweet Rosie O'Grady
And Rosie O'Grady loves me.

2. I never shall forget the day she promised to be mine;
As we sat telling love-tales in the golden summertime.
'Twas on her finger that I placed a small engagement ring,
While in the trees, the little birds this song they seemed to sing! CHORUS

-------------------------------------------------------

THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY

    CHORUS
She's the daughter of Rosie O'Grady,
    A regular old-fashioned girl.
She isn't crazy for diamond rings,
    Silkens and satins and fancy things;
She's just a sweet little lady,
And when you meet her you'll see,
Why I'm glad I caught her,
    The daughter of Rosie O'Grady!

MJ......Just to add, words and music for Sweet Rosie O'Grady are by Maude Nugent. My song sheet says:

BEGIN QUOTE
"A BIT of musical lavender that blossoms perennially from its Bowery roots is 'Sweet Rosie O'Grady'," says Douglas Gilbert. The writing of this simple sentimental ballad is credited to Maude Nugent. Certainly it was she who sand it to success at Tony Pastor's in 1896.
END QUOTE

But, then, at camp we sang:

Sweet Rosie O'Grady
A carpenter's daughter by birth,
She got tired of living and
Decided to leave the Earth.
She swallowed a ruler,
But dying by inches was hard.
So she went down in the alley, and,
She died there by the yard.

Here are the verses to "Daughter." There is a dedication by the authors: "Dedicated to our friend, Maude Nugent, author of 'Sweet Rosie O'Grady'".

THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY
Words by Monty C. Brice, music by Walter Donaldson. ©1918.

1. Yesterday while out a-walkin' I met a dear little girl.
Somehow we started a-talkin'. My brain was all in a whirl.
She said she came from old Killarney, so I started in to quiz.
I got a surprise that opened my eyes, for who do you think she is?

CHORUS: She's the daughter of Rosie O'Grady,
A regular old-fashioned girl.
She isn't crazy for diamond rings,
Silkens and satins and fancy things.
She's just a sweet little lady,
And when you meet her you'll see,
Why I'm glad I caught her,
The daughter of Rosie O'Grady!

2. I'm goin' to ask her to marry. I wonder what she will say.
I know that if I should tarry, someone will steal her away.
I've got the ring to fit her finger, and if she will name the day,
Imagine my pride when she is my bride, and I hear the neighbors say: CHORUS

Alice,
Montana

P.s. The tune is different from Rosie O'Grady.

I remember an episode where Bugs Bunny sings a few snatches of The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady. All these years I've thought it was one of Bugs' own compositions!

Does this mean he didn't write "What Do They Do On Rainy Nights In Rio" either?

Thanks, Alice. Now, where's Bugs when we need him?

I remember the cartoon well, unfortunately, he only did the chorus......Tiger

The plot thickens..... here is the Bugs Bunny connection. Both songs are in a songbook titled "50 Lucky Irish Classics", $14.95, published by none other than...... Warner Bros. Publications, Inc.!!

Sweet Rosie O'Grady,
She was Irish by birth;
She swallowed a tapeline,
She wanted to leave this earth.
She wanted to die by inches,
But finding that was too hard
She backed out into our alley,
And died there by the yard.

From: Jim Dixon

Who knew there was yet another song in the series?

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

THE SISTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY
Words by Frank H. Warren. Music by S. R. Henry. ©1918.
"Dedicated to Miss Mabel Normand."

1. Just around the corner 'bout a block or two from me,
Lives a blushing bride to be,
And sure I am the chappie
She soon will make happy.
Her family is famous as I know you'll quite agree.
Now I'll have to confess,
For you never will guess
Who this charming miss can be:

CHORUS: She's the sister of Rosie O'Grady; sure it's Maggie I mean.
She was three when Rosie was twenty and now she's seventeen.
Saucy eyes that twinkle! Such a pert Irish nose!
My steady lady is Maggie, sweet Maggie O'Grady.

2. Rosie had a quiet manner; that's not Maggie's style.
Such a tantalizing smile!
Sure the divil and all
For this lassie would fall,
And a dozen lads were buzzin' 'round my Maggie all the while,
But you bet I won out,
And in two weeks about,
I'll be marching down the aisle—

CHORUS: With the sister of....

YouTube has a kinescope of Maude Nugent, at age 75 in 1949, singing SWEET ROSIE O'GRADY on Milton Berle's TV show. Unfortunately, she only sings the chorus: click.

YouTube has many more recordings of SWEET ROSIE O'GRADY; I listened to several, but none that I listened to included the verses. Also, none of them seemed very old.

Here's a recording by Gene Kelly of THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY. It does include the verses. Here's another version from an Edison cylinder.

Here's the famous Bugs Bunny version with only the chorus.

I couldn't find a recording of THE SISTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY.
