See also Wm. Chappell's 'Popular Music of the Olden Time'. Many pieces in Ravenscroft's 3 books on the SCA Minstrel website (with the 16th century ballad project) are found earlier in what is called 'the Lant MS', c 1580, but I don't have a list of them. ABCs of all the known broadside ballad tunes of the 16th century are on my website, but not separated from the 17th century ones (and a few 18th century ones). Note that many were imported (French and Italian).

The 16th Century Ballad Project is well worth looking into.

There is an Anthology of Elizabethan Lute Songs, Madrigals and Rounds ( N520) - all written within a space of 25 years. with words and music by the following composers.

Thomas Campian - 1567 - 1620 Michael Cavendish - 1565 - 1628 William Corkine - dates unknown John Danyel - Dates unknown John Dowland - 1562 - 1626 Alfonso Perrabosco - 1580 - 1628 Thomas Ford - 1580 - 1648 Thomas Greaves dates unknown Tobias Hume - ? - 1645 Robert Jones - dates unknown Thomas Morley - 1558 - 1603 Francis Pilkington - 1562 - 1638 Philip Rosseter - 1575 - 1623 David Melville - Dates unknown Thomas Morley - 1558 - 1603 John Wilbye - 1574 - 1638

It was published by W.W. Norton & Company 55 Fifth Avenue New York. They also publish " An Anthology of English Medieval and Renaissance Vocal Music ( N461)

And of course, if you're the Lessa I'm thinking of, keep in mind that the Poxy Boggards first CD is mostly traditional. If you look on the liner notes, they credit authors, regardless of how long dead.

Can anybody recommend a place for me to get some Poxy Boggards CD's. I've been trying fro a couple of years. My main CD source at medieval events said he was out of stock last year, and you can just imagine the look on that ernest young man's face when I asked if they stocked them in his Borders Bookstore. If I can order through the 'Cat, I will, of course.

I don't know if they're available through the Mudcat (they don't go through any major labels)... You may want to try contacting the principles on the board for that question.

If you can't get 'em that way, their website (click here) has them. Either way, tell 'em Sean from the Seadogs sent you. They're a bunch of nice guys, and I'd like 'em to know that karma (and free beer) pays off in the end...

You can get the Boggards CDs thru the Jesters Court, which has a web page. It is owned by one of the singers. You can also order the Boggards Hymnal, which has most of their music with notation. I can also highly recommend their second CD...picked it up last Faire, and it is just as good as the first.

There are a LOT of good groups for that site. Several "renfaire" circuit acts, and a lot of good other trad acts.
